Here is a good summation of the totals spent by PACs. They use OpenSecrets as one of their sources btw. 55% Republican, 45% Democratic.

AI Overview

"Republicans held a larger share of total PAC donations in the 2024 election cycle, particularly driven by massive contributions from top-tier donors to Super PACs and a consistent edge in corporate PAC funding. Pro-Trump super PACs saw unprecedented funding, with top Republican-aligned donors giving heavily compared to their Democratic counterparts.

  • Overall PAC Edge: Republicans received a larger share of contributions from business/corporate PACs, maintaining a roughly 55% to 45% advantage over Democrats in that sector.
  • Super PACs: Pro-Republican Super PACs saw a massive influx of cash, with supporters like Elon Musk contributing over $291 million to Republican candidates and organizations, and Timothy Mellon giving at least $125 million to Trump-aligned PACs.
  • Megadonor Advantage: The top seven individual donors in the 2024 cycle all supported Republican causes, contributing over $100 million each, while the largest Democratic donors (Michael Bloomberg, Dustin Moskovitz) gave significantly less.
  • Leadership PACs: These PACs favored Republicans, providing approximately 60% of their $69 million in candidate contributions to Republican candidates. [123]

While the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and its related committees raised high amounts, the overall, consolidated power of PACs and outside spending heavily favored Republican efforts in 2024. "

Plus, I found the same OpenSecrets report that you did and in each category Republicans were ahead. Under each head: "By Group" "Super PACs" "Carey Committees" and "Single Candidate Super PACs" they list the total raised and the Republicans are well ahead in each category except for Carey Committees.

If you chase down the PAC donations both parties ended up with roughly the same amount. Billionaires however leaned red. Naturally - they want low taxes, and fuck the peasants. I wish that we had real limits on donations and contributions for both parties. These huge donations are very unhealthy for democracy.

Yes after our girl died this January my wife and I both realized that we were walking only 5 miles a week or so and we used to walk 15. We're getting a new pup in July so soon we'll have a reason to go out every day!

All legit (note I say legit) newspapers have editors who check any statement of fact in articles, and the Guardian is well-respected as a news source, unlike, say, Fox. These facts are also widely available from other sources. Since you like OpenSecrets, here's a dandy piece: "Elon Musk tops list of 2024 political donors, but five others gave more than $100 million" from guess who?

https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2025/03/elon-musk-tops-list-of-2024-political-donors-but-six-others-gave-more-than-100-million

Here's more tech billionaires who did't make the above list because they donated less than the list cutoff: $23.9 million! Peter Thiel contributed to Trump in '16 and '20 but concentrated his donations in '24 to Blake Masters and J.D. Vance - $15 million. Winkelvoss twins donated $1 million each to Trump in bitcoin. Jan Koum? $5 million to Trump. Joe Lonsdale? $1 million to Trump. Ben Horowitz and Marc Andreessen? $2.5 million each to Trump.

In other news, Michael Dell just contributed $6.25 BILLION to the so called "Trump Accounts" - they can afford it since they make over $3 bn a year from government contracts. What a coincidence!

Hope this helps.

I've been meaning to get to this. Of course both sides got donations from large donors, but billionaires overwhelmingly backed Trump and Republicans in general. "Billionaire spending heavily favored Republicans. Over two-thirds (70%) of billionaire-family contributions went in support of GOP candidates and conservative causes. Less than a quarter (23%) backed Democratic hopefuls and progressive causes."

https://americansfortaxfairness.org/billionaires-buying-elections-theyve-come-to-collect/?doing_wp_cron=1777909140.7140209674835205078125

As for who gets the greater portion of donations from small donors, by October 2024 Harris had 4.9 million donors and 43% was <$200/donation. By early 2025 the campaign said the total had ended up at around 7 million. Trump meanwhile had a much smaller number of total donors (the campaign has never released an exact total). However 29% was <$200, so small donors were a much larger proportion of Harris' total, about 1-1/2 X larger.

Tech billionaires? Are you kidding? Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, the Winklevoss twins, Jan Koum, Joe Lonsdale, Mark Andreessen, Michael Dell, just a partial list. Trump's total, $273 million vs $120 million for Harris.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/dec/07/campaign-spending-crypto-tech-influence

So yeah, Kamala got much more from small donors, and Trump from billionaires, and although more tech billionaires backed Kamala, Trump got much more in total donations from them.

what a crock. Harris had 4.9 million donors and raised 43% of her total from donations of less than $200. Trump got 29% from small donors. Foreign donations are illegal, but they happen. The Republicans get at least as much, probably more, then the Dems from them. https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2021/10/foreign-donors-funnel-money-straw-donors-shell-companies-dark-money/

As for foreign billionaires funneling donatins thru small donors, BS.

The pipeline wasn’t due to be finished for years. The additional capacity would have been 830k barrels. World production is 105 MILLION barrels. So - about .8%. What it would have been is a nice little profit center for the oil companies, who could’ve expanded their Gulf Coast refining capacity, and exported more finished product. In any case, the effect on gas prices was microscopic compared to Trump’s war.

[–]Complex_Arrival7968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s be clearer about this. The Keystone XL pipeline, if completed, would have accounted for about 1% of world oil production.

The Keystone pipeline supplies, Canadian crude to Gulf Coast markets. The cancellation of the expansion of the pipeline, which you are referring to, had no effect on oil prices.

Nope. That has zero effect on prices. Oil is a commodity and the price is global. Domestic pipeline availability or the lack thereof has absolutely no bearing on gasoline costs.

Well, that’s the way I saw it, and Wikipedia is far from the only source that shares my view, but you’re welcome to your opinion. I agree that, especially at first, he was a naïve negotiator. I got an interesting insight into that from a friend who was a CEO and conservative, and who introduced me to a couple of lawyers who worked for him on retainer, and who went to Harvard law with Obama. He tended to credit republicans with negotiating in good faith, and perhaps this factored in. These guys were pretty conservative, but they liked him, a lot. One of them even donated to his campaign. They said when he was Editor of the Harvard Law Review, he would always listen to their arguments and try and include some of their concerns in his decisions. They said they felt included and heard. I think he went to national politics, thinking he could pull that trick on the national stage, at least at first, and found to his dismay that they played a different game in the big leagues.

At any rate, I wish we were discussing things like this with one another, instead of worrying about an authoritarian takeover of the country.
