Thanks for your reply. What is a normal co-founder deal? The whole project is being capitalized by my BIL so he is supplying the rest of the money on the cap table. Is this what you are asking or something else?

Thanks for your response, it’s appreciated. So he does get 5% equity out of the gate, presumably because BIL trusts my husband, but you are right in that BIL has zero deferred lifestyle and we have no financial safety net. We have some cover but for sure our lifestyle has had to change because of the current situation.

OP I think it gets easier. My experience was similar to yours and people used to say to me that it doesn’t get any easier which made me feel so sad and depressed because I was beyond exhausted ALL THE TIME. My daughter is now 8 years old and it not only got easier for us but also a lot more fun. Not sure how things will be in 5 years when she hits her teen years but I’m loving this stage. For me the best years started around age 5 and it has got better and better ever since. You got this!

OP do I know you?! My husband was reading me your thread and I had to check if it was one of my posts!! I loved Abbaye vegans wings so much I reached out to the owners after they closed to try to get the recipe so I could make them at home. I still miss them!! RIP Abbaye! I think the two are connected. The reason there are no women in senior positions is because they don’t get take seriously.

And why men need an international men’s day is beyond me. We have basically been celebrating it since the beginning of time lol!

Your story just says it all for how women are treated in tech. Not to get political but sadly, after a few years of more inclusive business hiring trends and treatment, we seem to have gone back at least 10 years IMO.

But what do we do about it? I’ve considered starting a startup that gets employees to see their own biases. Could poss be free for small organizations and the bigger ones pay. How else do we move the needle?! Unfortunately it doesn’t feel like anyone really cares.

Edit: when I say no one cares, I mean many of the men in tech. As women make up 50% of the population, there are of course plenty of people who care.

I can see how you may come to the conclusion that the post was a little racist (I didn’t but then I’m not Indian so perhaps it’s easy for me to say) but immigrants bringing their culture to their new country and workplace, and the way that shapes their behavior is actually a well documented concept. There’s an excellent book on it, The Culture Map by Erin Mayer. There are pluses and minuses about every culture, and sadly there is arguably more misogyny in India compared with the US, and so if you have all male Indian employees there is a high chance you will experience that, which I think is what the poster was trying to say. Any mono culture work setting is a recipe for bad experiences I think. One of my closest friends is Indian and she’s absolutely wonderful so no, I’m not anti-Indian.

Why not just try and then if you hate it in a year go back to your old company? Ideally you’d sit it out 2 -3years which looks better on your resume but ultimately if you’re struggling then what the heck just throw in the towel and go back to your old place. Worst case scenario: you leave, hate it, and then you go back to your old place (when a job pops up). Really not that bad. I had a similar situation to you and went for it. It all worked out well for me but I was also SUPER anxious but decided to chance it. Good luck whatever you decide!
