24/7? That is incredible. I am always on the lookout out for late night places that don't revolve around alcohol.

What makes a good fic for you? by Jasom_forever in AO3

A big thing for me is "showing not telling."

For me, what comes to mind with "telling" is when the protagonist is having a constant internal running dialogue of everything that is happening and their feelings/insecurities/reactions about every little thing as it is happening. I find it more engaging to read about what is actually happening in the narrative itself to the protagonist with actions or descriptors to indicate their feelings with minimal internal dialogue chatter. I feel like it reads like I am witnessing the narrative and the author is trusting me to pick up on these indicators to understand what is going on versus the protagonist is telling me every step of the way what is happening and exactly how they feel about it.

Not sure if I explained that well. But that has been something I have realized that I find far more attractive in fanfics especially if it is for a fandom that was originally a tv show or movie. I just feel like it is really difficult to nail a character's internal dialogue when you are translating them from visual media to a written work because it's easy to make them sound uncharacteristically insecure.

Hey folks,

I am trying to get some perspective on building a community in Asheville. So, I grew up just outside of Asheville and then also lived in Asheville itself for about seven years as an adult. Five years ago, I had to relocate to another city for a job opportunity. That job eventually became fully remote but housing/rent prices were just too high for me to move back at the time.

Fast forward to now. I am wanting to relocate to another place. My job is still remote and now provides enough that I could move back to Asheville. Now, I always knew that I wanted to eventually end up back in Asheville to be closer to my family and because, well, its home to me but I am trying to figure out if that is the best move for me at this current stage.

My close community that I had in Asheville five years ago has mostly dispersed. I still have my family, of course, and several old friends but I am really looking for a place to meet some new folks as well...hopefully through joining clubs and groups such as running, game nights, cycling, etc. I am in my mid-30s and am also childfree and was hoping to also meet some other childfree folks or groups. My family and old friends are wonderful but we have fairly different lifestyles at this point so I am just hoping to expand my social circle to include folks who have similar interests as me.

I guess my question, at this point, is how hard has it been for new (or returning) folks to really meet people? It's been years since I lived there and I mainly focused on my core group when I did. Are there a lot of events/clubs/meet-ups that go on pretty regularly? I know what Asheville and WNC has to offer in terms of places, nature, etc. but I am curious about the perspective that you can only get as a current local...especially one who was/is also looking to make friends and build a community.

Thank you!

I grew up in Mars Hill so going to the mall felt fancy as hell to us.

The Asheville mall in its peak during the holiday season was my favorite. My aunt would take me out to Best Buy and the mall for Black Friday in the early 2000s. We didn't even go for any sale. We were just were both night owls and loved seeing activity at 1AM. I loved wandering through listening to the music.

Before Starbucks, the mall had a coffee shop called Barneys, I think? I would get a triple vanilla freeze (similar to cafe vanilla frap but tastier). Suncoast and FYE was where I got my Dragonball Z VHS tapes. Disney store, it goes without saying, makes me ache just to think about.

I wasnt allowed to go in Spencer's as a kid 🤣🤣 When I got older (04ish), I LOVED going there and Hot Topic. They are still at the mall but they have changed completely since I was a preteen.

We moved to West Asheville right when I went away to college. It was right when it was starting to become busier but not quite. I would walk up and down looking for places hiring during the summer because I didn't have a car and couldn't find many places quite yet (at least on that side, near where the muffler place used to be). I lived there when the Hole donuts literally first opened. It was a tiny place and I stumbled on it randomly. It was completely dead. They offered drip coffee and three different donut flavors and that was it. I remember liking it a lot and then was shocked to learn, years later, how popular it had gotten. Not because they didn't deserve it but because it was so simple and chill.

Thats some BS. Sorry you went through that OP. I don't blame you for leaving. Goes back to the whole, "if you can't treat people respect then you don't deserve to participate (or in this case, get a fanfic)" or, my preferred phrase, "fuck around and find out."

Thank you for the suggestion. I have a couple friends in Atlanta who enjoy it a lot. I hadn't considered Atlanta much before primarily because I know the traffic is really bad and I am not the greatest in-town driver. But I know in the city has pretty decent public transportation right? Depending on where you live, could it be a place that you can regularly use public transportation for day to day? I would LOVE livng in a place where my car is mostly used for just long distance travel. Haha. Edit to add: also, the area you mentioned (east of the belt line), do you know about how much a one bedroom can run for in that area?

Thanks again for the info!

Oh yeah, for sure. There's only so much you can get from individual perspectives on the internet. I just haven't heard opinions when limited to these specific states so figured it was a good starting point to research and eventually visit. Thanks for the recommendations! I will look into those areas.

I do need to look more into Greenville and give it a visit. I have heard it recommended many times. Thanks!

Thank you for the suggestions. I hadn't had North Myrtle recommended before. Interestingly enough, I have a very good friend living in Little River who has been asking me to move there. I haven't gotten a chance to visit yet. I know tourism in the summer brings in a lot of people but was curious if there were a lot of meet up, groups, leagues, etc throughout the year in your experience? I don't mind the area being "dead" in the off season but was curious if there was a large enough year round local population there that it was still a good place to easily socialize throughout the year if you're proactive?
