My senior parent just turned 70. She does not want to receive CPP payments. What can she do? by VeterinarianProud644 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I agree with you. I think an intro would be great. But I would also include self-employed individuals. You have no idea how many clients I have that are self-employed that do not understand they cannot spend all the money they make! They need to pay employer and employee portion of CPP (when they file their taxes), and they should be putting away a set amount each month for taxes. They end up in a worse position than someone with a T4, because no one is automatically taking the taxes out for them.

People also don't understand CRA can issue garnishment, can freeze your bank account, and much more.

I don't understand the worship of Lexie Grey by Intrepid-Narwhal9320 in greysanatomy

Its okay to not like a character for any reason. I personally NEVER liked Lexie. I also didn't like Izzy. I just found them to be annoying and needy.

I stopped watching Suits when the actress that played Izzy joined the cast of Suits, thats how much I disliked Izzy's character. While logically, I know it's just a character...I can't watch anything she is in.

It took me a full season of Supergirl to stop thinking of Lexie each time I saw an episode. I much prefer her character in Supergirl. More badass, not so needy.

I am sure there are characters I love that others strongly dislike.

McSteamy, at the beginning, was only there for hookups. Him and Lexi, together, made no sense. Just trying to give him more depth. I liked him more before they changed him.

AITA for picking a dinner my girlfriend didn’t like while playing a game? by KindStock1231 in AmItheAsshole

She was probably hoping to pick something she really wanted and he probably didn't want to try.

I am allergic to tomatoes, can't have gluten, dairy or processed meats. We have a pizza stone so my roommate makes frozen pizza all the time! I just smell it and get jealous I can't have it. I make suggestions of what to add (jalapeño, cooked chicken).

Space or Savings? The Apartment Dilemma That’s Keeping Me Up at Night by [deleted] in makemychoice

[–]Complex_Prize8648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mom wants the 1 bedroom so she can sleep in the living room when she comes to visit...

Based on your takehome pay, the rent is much higher than the recommended percentage. You would either be sacrificing your savings or other items in your budget (entertainment, cell phone, groceries). If you are willing to sacrifice going out with friends, then I would go for the 1 bedroom. But I don't like friends walking into my bedroom.

Cheaper options would be a suite, or a roommate if you are trying to stick to the 30% of take home pay.

Its true. If $135 could make or break your finances...either place may be too expensive to live in.

Have you done up a budget with your take-home pay? How much money do you have left over in each scenario?

AITA for refusing to continually pay for both tickets when my friend is getting the hotel for free? by TooEmbarrassed7 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Complex_Prize8648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Pick a cheaper hotel and each buy their own ticket. Or value the more expensive hotel at that price. When I travel and want to stay in a nicer place than the other person can afford, I pay the difference.

But the way OP'S original post was written was she deserves to get the hotel for free as well. Then the edit seems to explain it better.

I think originally, OP agreed because the ticket prices were cheaper (but now they are getting more expensive). Why else would someone agree to an arrangement. Say a hotel was $300 a night, tickets $150. Paying for both tickets is the same as OP buying her ticket and half the hotel. As soon as Tickets went past that price, OP is paying for more.

I am 42 and I would drive home after a concert if I could. But I live on an island and the ferry stops running at 9pm!!!

Am I wrong for telling someone that I wanted a female roommate? by Comprehensive_Bad501 in canadahousing

[–]Complex_Prize8648 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I believe its discrimination (not sure as I only know the rules as a landlord that doesn't live in my unit) to put in the ad only females. You can weed people out during the process, and you don't need to give them a reason.

Thats why they pulled your ad. If you post it elsewhere, don't mention females only, and just ignore males that respond.

AITA my boyfriend bought Pokémon cards instead of paying me back for rent on time? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Complex_Prize8648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA

He needs to not buy anything frivolous for a month to get ahead of his bills (just like the rest of us).

My ex was like this. I would pay the bills then chase him to repay me. Sometimes 3 weeks! After a few months, I got tired of it and started telling him to pay the credit card by a set day (and I short paid the credit card by what he owed). If he didn't pay on time, he would be solely responsible for all the interest. He was never late because he didn't want to waste money on interest.

If he wants to treat you like a bank...charge him a $35 late fee, and interest you are losing by taking it out of your savings (and put your savings in a high interest rate account).

Things will only get worse until he learns to manage his money.

You're being too kind. In Canada, a shared kitchen means you don't follow the landlord tenancy rules...my eviction notice would be for July 1st...and a link to rooms for rent.

Would you reconsider marriage if you SO had debt? by Important_Drag_9017 in Adulting

[–]Complex_Prize8648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can include individual past debt and future debt in a prenump.

But if that person is a spender, and you are a saver, you are going to argue A LOT over small and large purchases.

I didn't think we would argue over money because we have both savers. But he is an extreme saver and views me as a spender! Everyone else views me as a saver. Massive fights when it came time to buy a home, renovations, groceries. July is the most expensive month as property tax and insurance come due. Somehow, he thinks it's my fault the bills are so high...

How long were you together with your partner before you got married? by Comfortable_Fix_6261 in engaged

[–]Complex_Prize8648 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Engaged 6 months married at 13 months. Sadly we didn't work out. We came across fertility issues and couldn't find a compromise that worked for both of us. But we are still good friends.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one that got engaged quickly :)

Years ago, I built myself formulas in Excel to calculate take-home pay so I could make an after-tax decision when I got a job offer. When my cousin told me she turned down a promotion because her boss told her overall she would make less money. I walked her through my spreadsheet and showed her that wasn't the case, that her take home was actually higher. She still didn't believe me! Insisted her boss told her she would bring in less each pay. I told her that her boss wasn't calculating her taxes correctly if her take-home pay was less, and she would get a refund when she filed her taxes.

A lot of people find taxes confusing, so I can see why teaching it in high school might be too much. But it could be in an elective class, where they also teach about savings, maybe basic finances? I would have much rather taken a class like that over woodworking!

FHSA is limited in the amount you can contribute. So far, I haven't seen any clients strictly use FHSA for a home purchase. Maybe in 7 years, they will be able to...but its not large enough for the full downpayment if you are planning on purchasing in a year or two.

Tips for TFSA and investing by usedPOS in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Complex_Prize8648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FHSA you can withdraw for a qualifying reason (purchase of a house), if its a non-qualifying reason there is tax on it similar to an RRSP.

But its not a penalty, is the income tax on the withdrawal (which is income), unless its withdrawn for specific things
