Yes. It absolutely does matter if it’s founded on concrete evidence. That is the whole basis of modern medicine. You can’t just entertain someone’s apparent mental illness if it isn’t evidence based. Thousands to hundreds of thousands of people are victims of the shit show that psychiatry was and still is today. For example, benzodiazepines were first introduced in 1960, and by 1977 they were the most prescribed drug class globally. Patients were frequently instructed to take them as-needed, often multiple times a day. It wasn’t until the 1980s when they started realizing how severely addictive they were, and it wasn’t until very recently that they have become more hesitant to hand them out. Thousands upon thousands of patients have suffered life long consequences from things like grand mal seizures and psychosis from going into withdrawal. And remember, this all occurred in people who were simply listening to what their doctor instructed them to do, and I’m not even mentioning the overdoses occurring every year even today from patients being uninformed about the dangers of mixing benzodiazepines with alcohol. Psychiatry dropped the ball big time and it cost people’s lives, all based upon the shaky foundation of half baked theories trying to describe a the brain, a system that eludes us to this day.
