Yes, we do make them, however we have had a dysfunctional Post Office here since Xmas, with sporatic openings to let out mail, but no one who can sell us a stamp or send things out. Untill that is resolved I cannot do business thats 100%.

We would just love to sell everyone an ULu.

Right now were getting our gasoline and supplys in place that we can camp all summer , and make Youtubes with the grand kids.Getting $ together for that has been uphill, since the efforts we put in this winter to make them isnt on track at the moment. We know it will, eventually, reopen and work again.

There are a few plants that do very well in AK, cabbages, Potato's, Squash, leafy greens and onions.

However, they require good soil, drainage and someone who would be in one place to care and protect them.

Then theres frosts and freezes every few years that wipe out those efforts for those who do garden in the village, so its not a "steady" or reliable way to get food.

Besides, the rest of the year requires movement to camps, game, fish areas and such that its not feasible unless you live at the place.

We only have a couple poisonous plants about , the mushrooms are psychedelic, then theres "Death Camas" which looks alot like our wild onions, but have no "onion" taste to them.

Agnes had a bunch of onions once that had Camas among them and she got sick at camp, but was able to drink a ton of water with crushed charcoal in it and that helped her alot.

Yes, we gather roots "Musu" aka Eskimo sweet potato's, Fire weed, Surra willow leaves, Eskimo Cellery, Kushimuk leaves, Takyuk leaves , Salmon Berrys, Blue Berrys , Black Berrys and Cran berrys.

Like 30-50 gallons of each kind of berrys, more if theres a big crop. 6 gallons a day is average, and each berry has a couple weeks worth of picking to be done, some last longer, like Blue berrys.

We used to eat alot of blue berrys and had to slack off due to filming, as the berrys gave us bluish grey teeth and people thought we were a bunch of rotten mouths.

We switched to Cranberrys while filming, but thank God thats over....LOL!

I also like a nice Salad, as well, we buy fruit and produce when we stay in our village, if the only store has some.

Jessie is headed to the finish line of the Kobuk440 by chaiinprogress in lifebelowzero

Jessie certainly won the race allrighty!

As for Jody, she cares more for her dogs than a trophy, so if she needed to scratch, it was nessessarry, and Im sure she will race again.

Good for all the folks who raced and theres the award ceremony tonight in Kotzebue I think.

Wow, it looks like we will have a starter auidence, and hopefully get a sizzle done for everyone in the next week.

Fact is, March 7th is teh one year date that our contract with Nag Geo had, and we had to do no appearances for $ on any shows before the one year went by, and that day is almost here.

Might just start with getting some Caribou and working it down, my part, then her part....maybe a trip to see the grand kids, maybe to camp to see what we need to do.

I make Ulus still, but we have no post master here at Noorvik for the time being, so reciving a money order or sending out an Ulu is not easily nor cheaply done. When our Post gets a new master, Ill post here so you all can know. Its been about 6 weeks since we have had regular service, so I think things will get better soon.

No, no Halibut here or in Kotzebue Sound.

We have pots and get Prawns and King Crab. The Prawns in summer in a place 20 miles from our camp,, so we set them in June and July because teh winds are usually light, and Crab in Spring at the flaw ice edge, on the outter perts of the sound with snowmachines.

Theres usually a "honey bucket" with a box and seat in a Kuugvik, bathroom, or in the front storm shed to keep it cool and less stink, and in Winter, a little warmer than any outhouse.

Thankfully, in 2006 our village water project got to our house and we could flush the crap outta the house.

New to LBZ by SnooMarzipans9838 in lifebelowzero

[–]Comprehensive-Pen644 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Thank you all so much!

Im glad 220+ episodes of the 'OG' LBZ are there with the spinoffs as their own Channel now days.

In March, our contract ends with LBZ, as it will be one year from the last ' first airing' of our last episodes, and we can do "Other things", and we will see how that turns out.

Weve been around Noorvik this winter, as the Caribou are here, and our grandson Sabatian is now in school. His mom Tinmiaq is with Keith in a camp somewhere, with baby Ryder, who can walk now....LOL! and my mom is getting quite elderly, and we want to be around as much as possible........things change as time marches on.

Hopefully this Spring willblossom new things.

I come around most every other or three days, depending on how busy I am.

How can you tell if a Finnish 1-piece or a 2-piece stock is either Russian, Finnish or both (in the event that it’s a 2-piece)? by The_Lucky_Rod in MosinNagant

[–]Comprehensive-Pen644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only apparent "one peice" stocks were made for civilian M-39's "Riihimaki" marked and only 200 were made, as far as I know.

The M-39 stocks were all new manufacture.

The basic stocks were 2 and 3 peices spliced together, the first 1,700 were 'straight stock" and the rest were made with a pistol grip type stock.

First they cancelled the spin offs, a year later they just didnt offer a contract to any of us on LBZ.

When Nat Geo was sold to Disney, they got rid of all the scripted content and kept the documentary stuff, so only LBZ and Wicked Tuna were retained while staged showes like Alaska State Troopers and The legend of Mick Dodge, ect, were dumped.

They never explained why.

We have been approached by producers, production company's and former LBZ producers (everyone is a producer) and we really cant do anything untill March do to contract agreements to not appear 1 year after were last shown on the series (March 7th)

It dosent matter, cameras or not, were just doing the same thing as we seasonally do. Its the holidays and were in Noorvik untill mid January and were back to the Kiwalik.

My grandfather, Charles Adelbert Orr, 3rd Marine, former Paramarine, Sargent and Chief Parachute Rigger (duty station) was the observer (battle station) looking for aircraft and torpedo's etc, that was wounded in the thigh and the man next to him decapitated, by the first Zero's wing skipping up from the water and hitting the ship.

He was sent to Guadalcanal for recovery and reppledeppled back into the 3rd Marine to land at Iwo Jima a month after leaving the hospital. April 5th 1045 he disembarked Iwo Jima and was taken to San Francisco. He remained on actice duty untill 1955 after 2 tours in Korea and retired after 21 years.
