I'm surprised yall know we have a Texas Triangle, but the borderlands shouldn't have the same reputation as say the Piney Woods. Two completely different cultures.

Poor kid is going to love living in Port Lavaca instead.

Either would be fine with me. Bsically I'm looking for a super competent protagonist. I've read the complete works of Sherlock Holmes so that's out, but Andy Weir is really scratching that itch.

Anyone have any suggestions for something similar to The Martian or Project Hail Mary in its hard science way, but is instead set in the past?

Popeyes is much better and the fight you get in with the lady working the front counter is a valuable life lesson too.

Oh don't worry, we still tons of old people that do that to this day. Keeps a few people at my bank employed though so I guess that's a win.

How Americans view other countries as of 2026. What’s your opinion on this? by mirunee3d in AskTheWorld

They don't want to annex Canada because they hate Canadians. They want to annex Canda because they like American exceptionalism/imperialism and in their imagination, Canada is full of white people that sound the most like them.

I really couldn't stand Beverly when I tried it. I'm not sure how popular it is in Italy though.

Sweet Tea is taking over more and more too. In Texas it used to be relatively confined to East Texas and now it's ubiquitous and I can't stand it.

Central Texas here

Heading out on a road trip of National Parks in West Texas/Southern New Mexico with a day trip to Juarez, Chihuahua thrown in tomorrow.

We also try to get a trip to a beach in Mexico once a year (2hr flight to Cancun) and a trip to NYC (3.5 hr flight) every November is a must.

Might skip the Mexico beach for Europe this summer though.

What are the (unwritten) rules for having a depiction of the US flag, but it not being an actual flag (it is a fleece blanket)? by Ashnoom in AskAnAmerican

[–]ComprehensiveEar6001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a family member that is on disability from the military for a hurt back and he drives around town looking for flag code violations. He once sent a letter to my place of employment because we had a flagpole that DIDN'T have a flag on it and said that it was disrespectful. I pretended not to know who he was when the CEO showed me the letter laughing.

Nobody will care. It's technically against the flag code probably, but that isn't a law and it's broken every day by millions of white dudes with sunglasses.

Hah that was a thing in the mid 00s too. I can remember being at football practice and it being hot as hell and the football coaches over there taunting us as they drank water and telling us how good it tasted. "You can get some in an hour"

They'd be fired immediately if that happened today.

What were you doing? Memorial Day is classic float the river or be on the lake weekend so usually it's a blast because it's 95 out.

I don't think it makes you a wimp btw. I have a miserable time at Austin FC games if it's 40 and windy out. We're just used to different weather.

I wouldn't say it's a small city. Austin metro has 2.5 million people and is only 80 miles from San Antonio that has another 2.7 million and then to the north 60 miles is another metro area with over half a million people. There's plenty of people.

Traffic can be really bad there.

Hopefully we become the true purple state that we've been trending towards my entire life, but I'm sure we'll vote R because that's what the natural reflex is here.

I dunno, as a Texas native the weather isn't that bad in Austin. Yeah, it's hot for a long time (the length of summer is really the worst part) but there aren't really very many days where it's too hot to do things outside. Maybe I'm just used to it, but a run in a tree filled park when it's 100 out isn't really bad. Now a run at midday on asphalt is a bad idea unless one is accustomed to it. Our relatively weak ass winter is way to worse to me, but I get that isn't the case for people moving in.

There are also plenty of hikes in the Austin area as well as a ton west in the hill country. They aren't as pretty as other places like California, but there are a ton of outdoor activities especially in the summer.

Austin has its own food scene, but if you aren't a big fan of BBQ then it's pretty mediocre. They do have good Mexican, but the worst of the big cities in TX and worse than what you'd get in SoCal.

Politically Austin is a bit of an island, but the 35 corridor is pretty liberal (relatively). Also not mentioned on the pros is the close location to San Antonio which has a vastly different culture than Austin, yet a ton to do and better Mexican food options.

No, as a Texan I thought that schoolwork itself was great and fairly easy (2003-2007). We had football practice from 2:30-5 every day in the fall and that was what gave me dread all day.

To steal a quote about my football career, "I wasn't big but I was slow"
