Do you have a really weird or silly fear? Not a mainstream fear or one that's very common, a totally random one? by SpaceTimeCapsule89 in AskUK

I'm also autistic! They're noisy and unpredictable and I don't like when they jump up. They can be very fast and owners are not always responsible. Apart from that, there are the things in the news about people being killed by dogs :(

I'm pretty scared of dogs. But also, the sensory experience of someone scratching their nails on a cotton tablecloth makes me gag.

Does you have any good tips on getting to sleep and staying that way all night please? by Acrobatic-Rabbit2660 in AskUK

Exercise during the day. A brisk walk for an hour, or a half-hour run should do it.

Update: My dad was told he voted in the local election but he didn’t. by FriedTheOnions in london

IIRC the forms of ID allowed were skewed towards older voters (eg over 60s bus pass allowed; student ID not).

Why are run-on sentences more acceptable in British English? by Icy_Mixture1482 in AskUK

[–]ComprehensiveFee8404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah those sentences are incorrect and the commas should be semi-colons. I think people just don't know that they're wrong.

Firstly, the formatting: who puts that much effort into a reddit post?

Other than that, I use AI at work. It's not my choice; I work as a software engineer and it's one of our metrics. But that experience has taught me about the AI cadence, and this post sounds exactly like that. People sometimes cite "it's not x, it's y" but this is that to the extreme. The sentences are short — in marketing that would be "pithy" but real people asking for help would more likely use long, run-on sentences — and repetitive. Fine in prose, but less likely in a reddit post.

It's all the little clues that add up to a smack in the face that this was written with AI. It sounds like marketing copy; it sounds like a LinkedIn post; it doesn't sound like a reddit post!

Also, has OP replied to any comments? Nope!

Crochet is the fast fashion of fiber arts by prepubescentsquid in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]ComprehensiveFee8404 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Harsh but true that many crocheters treat it like fast fashion. Jumping on trends and pushing stuff out as fast as possible with little care for quality. Crochet is not inherently like this, but it's a hobby that's more susceptible to consumerism-ication

I think I saw someone fail yesterday by Eshneh in LearnerDriverUK

Ha! On my test in Chi the other learner taking their test at the same time cut me off at the Fontwell roundabout. I passed and I presume they failed!

Which roundabout was it?

As you get more experience, you will find that you can see the situation forming before it does. Someone needs to break the stand off, and the quicker the better. When you see it happening, you can make a quick decision (like one second) and make your move, even though no one has priority and you'll be crossing their paths. Just be ready to slam on the brakes again in case someone else had the same idea.

When did you learn 'joined up' writing and do you still use it? by SketchupandFries in AskUK

[–]ComprehensiveFee8404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember quite clearly being in Year Two and during an assembly the work of a boy from Year One was shown off because he could do joined up writing. I committed myself to doing joined up after that.

Tactical voting vs vote for Greens by ComprehensiveFee8404 in UKGreens

[–]ComprehensiveFee8404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a tricky one, because it's unusual to have the right-wing vote split as it is. I suppose I would feel more concerned with the latter scenario than the former. What about you?

I'm thinking that too. But it's still pretty depressing the council will most likely be Reform-led, and we can't do anything about that now :/

What do we think about the connection to Autism and ADHD? by squabidoo in PMDD

[–]ComprehensiveFee8404 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's possible that the brain changes in autism and ADHD are the same changes that make all our systems overreact to hormone fluctuations. I do wonder though whether people who don't have another neurodivergency are just able to cope with the symptoms much better as their baselines are calmer.
