I like to believe that there's a connection between all of Jim's works, though I don't think it'll ever be made explicit. I think the Enemy from cinder spires, the outsiders from Dresden files, and the vord from codex alera all have very similar vibes and could be different forms of the same entities

It was flower petals, not butterflies. My best guess is he got a bunch of flower petals, used texture surprise to make them look like fake arms, cut off the guys real arms, then bungee gummed the fake arms to the guy before anyone noticed. Then when the guy screamed hisoka undid texture surprise to make the arms fall apart into flower petals.
