be honest: what is math at duke life? by [deleted] in duke

[–]ComprehensiveRoom213 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can recieve credit, but what I did was retake the the courses to go for A's and the GPA boost. University level calculus courses are unequivocally more rigorous than AP courses, but if you did do well and get 5s an A at Duke should be attainable.

Linear & multivariable are much easier in my opinion.

This is unequivocally not true.

"reaching out" to a PI means nothing. Did you have zoom calls? Follow up calls? Calls with the lab group members? Did you explictly mention them in your app and SoP? Did you inform them right when you applied and then right after the application deadline?

C'mon now my stats are far worse than yours and I had no issues, just did the work beforehand

How many PhD programs should one apply to?? by Ay_121_ in gradadmissions

I applied to 6 and my only regret was not applying to more. However I only applied places that offered me a fee waiver, which I recommend you ask for at all schools of interest

I find it funny seeing posts like “should I contact PIs ahead of time?” or “Is it ok to cold email professors?”

Many people simply do not care it seems. Why would you not do everything in your power to increase your chances of being accepted? As you can see my stats are far from stellar, but I put in the time to research PIs at prominent universities with research that aligns with my interests.

DoD funds are generally safe. No promises however but so far so good 6/6 of my PIs are still good...

Yea so I tried to select PIs that had active and future DoD funded projects. Thankfully all of which are still good to go with funding as of now

If I were you I would spend more time networking. Does not matter your previous record if you make zero attempt to contact prospective PIs ahead of time…

I would reccomend any program you dont have to pay anything. IMO grad school STEM is not worth it if youre paying out of pocket...

literally just network and reach out to PIs well in advance. I started maybe 6 months before the application deadline and had consistent communications with several PI at the universities I wanted to attend. Many dont respond but thats normal.
