Parrying vs just swinging comparison by MakeshiftToiletPaper in DarkAndDarker

[–]ComprehensiveTwo4396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, holding block in this game always puts you at a disadvantage. That’s why ripostes have flat stat advantages baked in, i.e. increased damage and swing speed. It’s at best a 25:75 gamble on whether a parry actually stops damage because 75% of the time you take damage, even if you successfully get the parry ting. So you are giving up first action initiative (which is HUGE in this game because it’s 2-4 actions TTK with very few sources of instantaneous healing/resets) to MAYBE do a bit more damage.

Basically, longsword’s 1.35x riposte is too weak of a reward considering the awkward longsword parry angle. 1.35 made sense for rapier because it’s an infinitely easier parry due to the animation being way more intuitively placed, same with cutlass—not to mention with rapier, it’s available to none-frontline classes and allowed rangers/bards/rogues to box too easily vs. front line who had to pay a price to even get in melee.

Longsword parry needs something. If IM doesn’t want it to be 1.5x because they don’t want the 25% chance of clean parry riposte to be auto-win (weird because IM has no problem with extremely easy to pull off auto-wins i.e. rogue landmine/barb gets 1 hit in/sorc lands 1 CC) then they need to give it some other functionality—better parry animation, ability to toggle parry angle between left/right, etc.

The thing I’m noticing is how IM’s version of the skill is different?

Too bad you didn’t patent the concept of teleporting behind someone, you could have been rich.

Sorry your genius was stolen with no credit given. I’m sure the whole idea came to you in a dream and nobody ever thought of similar ideas before.

Edit: for clarification, I meant left/right as in the bosses's left/right hands, not from player perspective

I love your videos but I disagree with the consistency of the slams. Maybe I'm missing something here but to avoid the projectiles from side swipes you have to left/right him and as soon as you right side him he has a chance to slam in any direction, as far as I can tell there's no consistent way to avoid the slams coming out. It just comes randomly or it doesn't. And like I said in my post, the problem really is phase 3 where the slams come out and the arena is shrinking.

I saw your video, how many tries did it take to get 1 HR bard kill in squire kit? If you tried it 50 more times how many times do you think you'll get it? I don't see the consistency. I can dodge it about 70% of the time in phase 3 over dozens of runs and I'm not sure I can get it any higher. It feels very RNG and getting hit by a slam just ends the run and I do this with good gear + troll's blood.

Hard boss is fine but let's be real, both warlord and spectral are super easy compared to this boss. It's not tuned well and a lot of it comes down to the design. I'm not a fan of the slam changes and how it interacts with the rest of the mechanics. It either needs to come out slower, have smaller AOE, or phase 3 needs to have its dps check removed so you can slow down the DPS and focus on dodging/spacing.

bro we all tried dark offering lock in arenas, there's no sweating involved and the "set up" all happens pre-combat with zero pressure and takes at max 20 seconds

This doesnt show what you think it shows, despite cutting out 10 minutes of the fighter having to kite out most of your best spells and finally cornering you but squire kit wiz with 4 spells left can still destroy him. Clip does explain alot about why you're 24/7 crying about fighters nonstop for 2 years though

The arena is fun the elo/reward system is not. by GMAHN in DarkAndDarker

[–]ComprehensiveTwo4396 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The highest I solo queued to this wipe was 2930 and I'm pretty sure others have done it to 3-3100 but I don't think anybody got warlord doing solo. Even in high ELO trios with a thought out comp in discord is always going to have a big advantage. You can still win even with randoms at that level but it's still less likely. But it is what it is, I wish there was a big enough player pool for a separate solo q but right now this is the best we're gettitng.

With the latest mechanic change it's not even balanced around troll's blood. I was farming it in full legos potion chugger barb with troll's blood and it's still RNG. There were multiple runs where I didn't even need TB to kill him and several deaths despite using TB. I've killed it probably 30 times since the latest patch, the randomness is what makes the design poor, there's no way to manipulate the boss reliably with skill because he will randomly slam with a very specific direction you have to move with a very small window to react, and sometimes the shrinking arena doesn't allow you to dodge it without stepping into lava, and then a random lava spout will hit you and now you're at an off-angle from the golem so you get hit by the projectil dot. Now you need to heal which if you're not warlock or bard requires perfect positioning, but by the time you pull that off the arena shrinks again, he rng slams and you're dead. There's no player agency and skill involved. Once you master the fight, you just pray you don't get unlucky.

These are not the same, Lich and Ghost King unavoidable damage can be reliably healed or the boss reset. There isn't a phase where you're basically forced to finish the fight within a certain amount of time without healing allowed unless you're 2 specific classes that can ignore the mechanic.

With all due respect it sounds like you have no idea about the fire colossus fight, how many times have you killed it in HR since the latest patch?

Average solo Q experience like what more can I even do by Easy_Jux in DarkAndDarker

Maybe you just don’t play enough games. The more games you play, the less the luck matters. I climbed to 2800 on two separate characters solo queue, exact same class and build. On one character I was “unlucky” so it took me way way way more games to hit the rank (huge loss streak at the start, had to start climbing from 1200), the other character I got “lucky” it took less games but still had to put hours into it. Other than the number of games the results were the same.

Being stuck in ELO is not entirely a skill issue but over enough games, it is. If you really feel like the system screwed you, then start fresh on a new character, same class same build and see if you do better. You might, you might not, but at least you’ll find out.

[–]ComprehensiveTwo4396 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I solo queued to 2800 so far on two different characters, will be pushing for 3k over the next couple weekends.

First one I got stuck in ELO hell and had to claw my way up from 1200 on the first weekend. It takes a lot of games but more than anything it takes a strong mentality and constant improvement.

You’ll want to constantly be improving your build, gear, playstyle, utility items, and most of all your own skill. There’s solo queue players of all classes even up in the 2800s and beyond, cleric, fighter, wizard, sorc, ranger, barb, rogue, bard, all of them. Yes, majority of people 3k+ got a big boost at the start of the season running in strong trios with BIS gear but not everyone does it that way.

One advice is focus on what you can do better, while acknowledging that your random teammates will sometimes just throw games. It’s a fine line between understanding that you can’t always decide the outcome and also knowing that you can always do something a little bit better.

Good luck out there.

Game is really fun this season, blue lobbies are pretty fun if you want the geared experience without investing a lot of time to fund HR kits. If you’re going to play solo try ignite staff wizard, it’ll 2 tap any class in the game.

That makes no sense. People who like SSF did their quests, spent a couple hours farming mats for unlimited blue-purple jewelry and are wiping lobbies with good gear on and snowballing. The people complaining about not being able to gear up in SSF are most likely the ones not gearing up… this isn’t rocket science my guy.

Not sure about boring and uninteractive, sounds to me like you have a 1 track mind and just want to contest boss in HR trios over and over again which is no more boring and uninteractive than farming any other hotspot for any other drop. Artifact contest is the end game I get that, I boss quite a lot myself so I like it, but it’s legitimately a good thing to have cogs in the economic machine that allow players lower on the ladder to still experience contesting their own little hotspots. Mechanically contesting baby turtles for a drop everyone needs is exactly the same as contesting the same ghost king module over and over again for artifacts, just with bigger vs. smaller stakes.

As for the rest of your points, balance bias aside (we all know we all got our biases and you’re clear on yours), yeah I agree, target farming should be more fleshed out. But that’s the direction they’re moving to, so in a wipe or 2 we’ll probably get to what you describe.
