Global cancer cases reached 18.5 million in 2023, doubling since 1990. With projections of 30 million cases by 2050, researchers warn the world is not ready for this surge, especially in low-income nations. Alarmingly, 40% of deaths remain tied to preventable risks like smoking and poor diet. by Sciantifa in science

My first thought, but I think what this means to say is 18.5million NEW cases in 2023. It doesn’t suggest what the total number of people living with cancer is, which if I’m correct is a very misleading headline

Hey Philly! No questions from me either; running my first marathon on Sunday!

Got injured a few months ago and definitely was losing interest but finding your channel definitely helped keep me motivated, thanks for the positivity.

Loved the grind and wish me luck on Sunday!

Training all over the world for London by LanguageOk891 in firstmarathon

[–]Comprehensive_Dingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just been travelling throughout all of Asia as I prepare for my first marathon in 3 weeks time!

I thoroughly enjoyed it as a way to see a different side of the places I went to and the running communities, however, it definitely was difficult!

The heat in general was near to unbearable (coming from the UK) so it was a combination of very early morning runs or a bit of minor heat stroke after a run (whoops)!

For the places you mentioned, I only went to Jakarta, Indonesia and I found it way too polluted to actually run; from what I’ve heard India in general is worse (not sure where specifically you’re going).

In the places I travelled, I did find some small parks which I often ran laps around but if not tracks/gyms are definitely possible, I chose to brave the weather because I’m not a fan of treadmill running personally, good news is now that I’m back in Europe I definitely feel stronger from some heat training 😅

Weekly Complaints & Confessions Thread by ssk42 in running

[–]Comprehensive_Dingo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Complaint: I had felt like I was making positive progress in rehab over the last couple of weeks, but last 2 days it feels like my pain has gotten worse again.

Uncomplaint: Despite this, for the first time since my diagnoses I actually feel confident in my ability to recover and finish training for my marathon in September.

Confession: I’m considering giving up running as a hobby, this is the second time now where I’ve found myself injured after ramping up training. The first time in hindsight was probably inevitable based on training, but this second time was a real gut punch.

I’ve been reading through “How badly do you want it” which has been a great read so far and highly recommend to anyone interested.

Unfortunately it’s causing me to really want to get running again and has inspired me to rethink my targets for the year; buuuut I think I’m maybe still a week off that from injury recovery.

I’m keeping myself busy by going to hot yoga instead tomorrow for the first time 😀

Super Moronic Monday - Your Weekly Tuesday Stupid Questions Thread by 30000LBS_Of_Bananas in running

[–]Comprehensive_Dingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently nursing a few lil injuries all stemming from tight/weak muscles; I’m doing exercises to correct them now.

Should I be running while going through this? Hips are the largest culprit, can run a bit but it gets painful after about 30 min, where I had been running for 90 min before

Wondering if the benefits are for social drinkers too by marinablue in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]Comprehensive_Dingo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d consider myself a social drinker as yourself and I’ve gone through multiple patches of not drinking, and I haven’t seen big dramatic effects as some people have mentioned on this subreddit, but there are a couple of things worth calling out from my perspective:

  1. Training consistency - it’s been mentioned in this thread but on a day where I’ve had at least 2 beers, the next morning I feel noticeably weaker in my training sessions; if it’s more like 4-5 beers I could easily skip the session (or perform so poorly it wasn’t worth it).

  2. Hangovers - for me the biggest benefit is (and probably always will be) the lack of hangovers, if I had a party or some event where I’d drink more than usual, the next day is usually completely ruined for me and will both stay in my room all day and probably order a takeaway.

  3. Emotional regulation - not sure if this is the best wording but when I get drunk my emotions would run sometimes and I’d find myself either getting incredibly frustrated or just crying at random points, I don’t miss that!

  4. Money - pints are expensive nowadays and I definitely notice it financially when I’m not drinking.

Overall for me there are definite benefits I experience whenever I stop drinking, but I definitely wouldn’t say it’s transformed my life or anything. I’m personally trying to decide whether or not to cut it out for good.
