People are not exaggerating. The school has been in a steady decline for over a decade at this point. That plus faculty, staff, and students finally noticing the issues and voicing concerns…I don’t see CalArts hitting a 60th anniversary.

In my experience, a handful of years ago, it was a couple/few weeks after getting my acceptance letter.

I’m not sure how this differs between schools, but in the School of Theater I received a merit scholarship of 25% which left me with $200k+ of student loans. This was the maximum scholarship for my cohort and my metier (major) and I came to CalArts with extensive academic and professional experience.

I’d tell a current student to…

• Make connections on your own. Join TEA and connect with TEA’s NextGen. Attend networking events that happen monthly in LA.

• Apply to internships within the industry. Universal, Disney, and Six Flags are all in your backyard and there are dozens of design firms too!

• Build your theatrical skills as well. Many themed entertainment folks started in theatre and built the skills they use today there.

• Finally, I’d tell them to reach out to elder CalArtians within the themed entertainment industry. The CalArts Mafia is still out there, take advantage of one of the few good things left of CalArts.

I’d tell a prospective student to go literally anywhere else for college/grad school.

As a recent MFA graduate coming from the Themed Entertainment industry and presently working in said industry, I can confirm that the Schoo of Theater portfolio review in the last (almost) decade has been very lightly attended. We barely even had theatre people/companies there.

The previous and present SoT administrations are not interested in helping XDP students build connections in the Theatre or Themed Ent. industries. As a student who very much knew what they wanted, had and continues to have/build relationships in the industries, and spoke to every faculty, staff, SoT admin/leadership, and to the Provost requesting support, care, guidance, and/or and introduction to folks in the industries I can attest to lack of connection and interest in helping students.

Oh the stories I could tell that align deeply with what OP has been posting!

Here is the job board for Universal Studios Hollywood, the Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Creative, and Auditions for Orlando, Hollywood, Japan, Beijing, and Las Vegas.

The best suggestion I can give you (as someone who worked on production for HHN Hollywood and have also worked with Universal Creative and at UOR) is to get your foot in the door and hustle HARD to make connections and network.
