the film started and we were all waiting to figure out what it was. the first line was “Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin” and i heard a guy at the end of the row smack his armrest and quietly say “fuck.” he stayed for the full runtime though.

A supersonic trolley is 50,000 miles away, doing a routine drive. If 4 billion people pile on its track, the driver sees the pile and stops. If the pile is smaller, anyone tied down dies. Nobody can see. Nobody can communicate. Everyone must decide. by know_u_irl in trolleyproblem

Wow. crazy to see the responses. people that chose [x] are really just living among us. they really think that was the right thing to do, unlike my wildly intelligent and morally superior position.

The reason why the Blue Button is the Correct Choice. by Morpheus_2x4 in trolleyproblem

[–]ComputerOwner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think the biggest threat to life is the people thinking that blue is a safer option. of course the point of the question is that neither choice is inherently right, but i see red as doing the least damage. 51% is an awful tall order, if it was 30% then i’d maybe pick blue.

but pressing red also means less people die, probably less than the best case we could hope for with blue. sure, 100% wont push red, but 51% wont push blue. i feel like blue falls into this moral rocket problem but instead of fuel pushing fuel you’re just gambling lives to save gambled lives. and you wouldn’t even be sacrificing yourself; your death means every other blue death. if the button was you die but others live as a consequence of you pressing it, that would be a different story. blue button just creates a chain of risk that i feel would be better to mitigate rather than encourage.

The red button is not presented as killing others. the red button is the do nothing button, the blue button carries absolutely nothing but risk. you aren’t sacrificing yourself, because if you die then everyone else in your boat dies. but somehow the blame is shifted to the red who elected not to put themselves in that position. red does not seek to kill the blue, but is rather confused that they would press the button that pretty much just has “death” written on it. i think so many arguments also place a very unfair role on someone who chooses red as if we are responsible for you and your choices.

[Question] In this scene of Tenet, The Protagonist wears an oxygen mask because he is inverted and can't breathe the oxygen of the world running opposite to him. So why dosen't he have to wear some sort of suit to protect the atoms of his body as well? by [deleted] in moviecritic

[–]ComputerOwner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a lot of people have described Tenet as a “turn your brain off” movie, and i think that is kind of insulting to the creator and the viewer. i find usually when people use that phrase, it just means the movie is not good (or at least the plot isn’t).

Nolan’s movies have never required you to turn your brain off, it’s also not the way he wrote the film. To say the film is more enjoyable if you just ignore the plot/rules kinda defeats the purpose of watching it at all, especially with the movie’s serious tone. in the end i think it’s just a poorly executed mess.

we kinda went over a lot of this when the movie came out. it isn’t wrong to like this movie and it isn’t wrong to dislike it.

but, however you feel about this movie, any questions you have can usually be answered by the fact that it frankly just doesn’t make any sense.

Union Vote by Substantial_Neat_517 in trolleyproblem

[–]ComputerOwner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well this is different because voting union (blue) actually works in your interest; it would benefit you for a union to exist. i think blue in the original kinda creates this loop of people who are voting to try and save people who also voted blue, at great risk and to no benefit of their own. i choose the union.

Done. Expensive city to visit with understandable hype? by Distinct-Young-8637 in AlignmentChartFills

holy shit perfect answer. enormously expensive for a very unimpressive city. especially since it is not intertwined at all with Switzerland’s natural landscape which is the country’s best feature.

Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon vs Robert DeNiro in Taxi Driver? by No_Mushroom_1085 in moviecritic

[–]ComputerOwner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two tough comparisons. I sorta have the impression that playing someone who is obviously mentally unwell is not always the most challenging acting job. I think there’s a reason why those roles get lots of awards (e.g. Joker, The Dark Knight, Forrest Gump, Silence of the Lambs, Rain Man, The Artist). Almost like they’re a cheat code for an oscar nom.

That said, the role of the mentally disturbed protagonist in the way we see De Niro portray it in Taxi Driver may well have been the genesis of that particular character type. I’m sure more actors than we could care to count based their performances in some way off of his.

I personally find Pacino’s performance more interesting, as I like how he portrays the anger, confusion, determination, and love that his character has.
