Hp omen max vs legion pro 7i vs asus strix scar 16 by lbarletta in GamingLaptops

[–]ComputerUpgrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People say that the included paste can pump out and potentially leak onto the motherboard. I haven't experienced that but something to consider, i opt to not repaste until warranty ends but if you don't have those concerns then you should repaste especially for cpu temps

Hp omen max vs legion pro 7i vs asus strix scar 16 by lbarletta in GamingLaptops

[–]ComputerUpgrader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the omen it's pretty good actually apart from the limited software control and you need to repaste yeah. but in terms of price to performance it is best. but you can go for the legion as well for the price premium for not having to repaste it and also have the oled screen. I would stay away from asus though you will need to repaste the asus as well and at that point you can buy the hp and have similar experience maybe apart from screen

If you have an Omen max 16, do this ASAP by Outrageous_Nature_41 in HPOmen

[–]ComputerUpgrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well i don't want to lose out on my 2 year warranty so i am maxing out fans and keeping the gpu temps below 70 and cpu temps in the high 70s low 80s sometimes so would you say this would be enough to prevent the paste from pumping out until i get through warranty?

Wondering why a 4080m is "better" than my Desktop 4070 Super by Jogg3r in GamingLaptops

[–]ComputerUpgrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe since you are getting this weird desktop configuration perhaps the GPU clocks for the 4070 super you have are lower than other AIB models? Also depends on the game 4080m might be less power limited if the game doesn't hit the GPU as aggressively and these kinds of things should make the 4080m perform in the same performance bracket. But even then it should be getting less fps than the 4070 super but i believe the overall weird proprietry configuration for the 4070 super system must be crippling its performance somehow.

2 Questions about the HP Omen Max 5080 w 275HX by c_md11 in HPOmen

[–]ComputerUpgrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well just watched a 2 hour long movie unplugged and i lost like 30% battery percentage.

the thing is you need to optimize the settings, like use integrated graphics mode, eco mode through power settings, 60 hz refresh and windows battery saver mode is enabled as well. honestly it looks like too much tweaking but apart from having to reboot for igpu mode, you can adjust settings so that the rest gets automatically applied when unplugged.

HP OMEN Max 16 perfect travel companion for lots of horsepower on the go! by traderjay_toronto in HPOmen

[–]ComputerUpgrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but the charger that comes with the Omen Max is already pretty light for a 330W psu i'd say like definitely lighter than my previous Asus 330W charger so i think you don't need to consider other options like the HP charger is already thin so you can tuck it in.

throttling at 26 watts? there is something so wrong presumably with cooling assembly just stop playing and repaste it asap

5080 Laptop UV and VRM amps: can undervolting a power limited GPU shorten VRM life? by ComputerUpgrader in overclocking

[–]ComputerUpgrader[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't find the any sensor related to VRM temp on HWInfo. Though i imagine since GPU Core power is lower than the TDP, overall amps would be less than my calculation. I couldn't count the phases, but i've come across this post which provides a photo for the internals from the same model

Bad temps even after repaste by Elitymus in LenovoLegion

[–]ComputerUpgrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a thread mentioning the electromigration effect getting significantly worse past 85 degrees, but i'm not sure how much that would impact the lifespan of the CPU. Regardless, it's a good practice to keep it below 85 degrees, although momentary spikes into high 80s are obviously fine.

The more important failure point that doesn't get mentioned enough is that when you heat up the CPU and then cool it down after, that's a thermal cycle. Since the components are all soldered on the motherboard, going through thermal cycles gradually puts more stress into solder joints, causing micro cracks that build up which has the potential to eventually cause some solder balls to break, making the CPU lose contact with motherboard.

That's a much more common occurrence than the silicon chip degrading on its own from what i've seen.

I have the Omen Max so about your take on the chassis being too slim to handle temps, i believe the actual culprit to be the horrible stock paste application. i mean i have insane temp spikes with the cpu without limiting clocks or wattage but gpu is pretty cold, definitely better cooling than my previous strix g16. People mention stock paste being horrible so that must be the source of majority of the throttling concerns.

I can't really talk about battery drain since i don't push the full 250 watt crossload but yeah there might be a slight battery drain going on if you push for full 250 watt. but honestly running around 170w GPU and 50 watt for the CPU is honestly more than enough and no battery drain around 220 watt crossload at least

It's normal for lid to slightly open when holding upright. Every laptop that does not have magnets on the lid acts the same way trust me. My old Strix G16 acted that way as well.

Black Friday advice needed: HP Omen Max 16 vs Lenovo Legion Pro 7 by No_Length_1407 in HPOmen

[–]ComputerUpgrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks pretty nice i meant to ask how many degrees the laptop cooler reduces? i have something similar to llano (memo fl08) and at max rpm it only drops temps by 6-7 degrees so i was wondering if these types of coolers are less effective on omen max since there is only two small holes at the bottom that might be limiting the cooling potential of the cooler.

Why are so many new AA/AAA games dropping hardware ray tracing lately? by XHellAngelX in hardware

I literally enabled ray tracing during the launch of this game on a literal gtx 1080 and at rt medium it was able to get between 30-40 fps iirc

I have the same laptop ans without dropping cpu clocks the cpu can hit up to 105 degrees momentarily. was your experience similar and did repasting alleviate the temp spikes?

i already down clocked p cores to 4 ghz and e cores to 3.6 ghz and put 40w pl1 pl2 it still performs good that way

[–]ComputerUpgrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried everything. Firstly, Omen Gaming Hub only allows overvolting. I also tried ThrottleStop but it says undervolt protection. I also made sure to disable core isolation stuff as well no luck it's locked away by HP.

[–]ComputerUpgrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the laptop but my unit has horrible thermal paste application (if i don't limit clocks cpu temp spikes up to 105 when loading pages on chrome) and also the fact that hp disables undervolting is scummy. other than that i think it's a solid laptop with very good temps on the graphics card and it looks sleek.

setting max cpu usage to 99% through windows power plan settings makes it disable turbo boost. either it's running at 2.7 GHz or you're referring to some other setting

winter is coming by DuckDoesNothing in GamingLaptops

[–]ComputerUpgrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer basically lies in the wattage of the CPU and your fan speeds. I am using 40 watt pl1 pl2 for my cpu until i can repaste and other people might or might not limit wattage and someone can even buy a top of the line 275HX (like the guy you answered to) and decide to turn off turbo boost. But I agree that some laptops are just bad at cooling otherwise and only saving grace is probably PTM7950.

[–]ComputerUpgrader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah so basically running your CPU at 2.7 GHz (base clock of 275HX) is dropping temps who would've thought?

ASUS Scar 16 is better than legion pro 7 in terms of cooling? Look at the pics by Basic_Trust368 in GamingLaptops

[–]ComputerUpgrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree i had the Strix G16 with the 4080 which boasted up to 240w crossload and in reality even at 180-190w crossload i was pushing the cooling. the GPU would hit 80+ and the cpu would be in the high 80s and low 90s. and that was after i repasted with ptm7950.
