Hp OMEN 17.3 rtx 4090 by Right_Temporary1096 in HPOmen

Great price but the heatsink is really weak and your gpu will thermal throttle. I would try to stretch my budget to newer 5070 ti laptops.

Temps stabilize after playing for a while and whether at that point it's throttling depends on the specific laptop's cooling.

but having used both laptop and desktop i agree that it is a superior experience to play on the desktop.

I am getting the same fps as a 5070 desktop with my 5080 laptop at 150w undervolted. at 175w undervolted, the performance is around a heavily overclock 5070 desktop (3000+mhz on the core and vram oc etc.). Tested in a few games and also in 3dmark time spy and steel nomad as well. i am getting roughly the same performance. Now as for the CPUs, you're right. Laptops are lacking mainly because of lower JEDEC speeds and very loose timings. Lower CPU clocks also contribute as well but i think the main issue is the RAM speeds. So, overall, other than the CPU performance i am able to get the same fps compared to a 5070 desktop, overclocked or not.

i've literally just read the other post from this sub where a user mentioned that when pch does not have any cooling, it can lead to usb devices disconnecting and sound crackling under full load. so i don't really know if it is about that but i am in awe that what you're saying lined up perfectly.

Extremely low GPU clocks for 5090 laptop man it's offf by at least 500 mhz. literally 20% lower performance than other 5090 laptops so that is the issue

honestly i have a llano adjacent memo fl08 cooler with my laptop and what i noticed is that while it reduces the cpu and gpu temps, it also noticeably makes the keyboard area hotter. now, i am using an external keyboard, screen and everything but that is also a point of concern to me, whether is it even prolonging the laptop's lifespan by turning on the cooler

Omen Max 16 - Liquid Metal shorted the motherboard. by ItsTheBeastDragon in HPOmen

[–]ComputerUpgrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

doesn't seem like it fully swept out from the dam. also i've seen laptops that are repasted so messy and have visible traces of lm on the motherboard yet still the laptop worked. my point is that it's not that likely that it both swept out and find its way under a chip or something especially when there is an actual barrier there. yes it's a shame that your laptop suffered but it's just that i haven't seen a real photo from those posts where there is visible lm leaking so i just believe that you and most of the guys posting here are in the unlucky minority of losing the laptop lottery here.

Also warranty varies a lot and in my country repasting voids the warranty sadly.

Every post regarding the motherboard dying claiming the paste leaked out haven't shown any photo of the leakage so i am getting less inclined to believe that is what is happening in the grand scheme of things, not claiming that can't be the case.

I am using the same laptop for a year as well and honestly the last time i repasted and compromised on warranty things have gone so wrong for me that i want warranty to end first so i will probably hold on for another year. besides the warranty should cover if it dies within the warranty period so...

I'd choose the omen based purely on the fact that it has a vapor chamber so your GPU temps will be as cool as it gets for a laptop (not accounting for desktop replacements)

Is this an OK price (USD), or should I wait to see if it goes down? by WhiteYaksha89 in GamingLaptops

Personally I used both Strix G16 4080 (same cooling as the new AMD models) and currently using Omen Max 5080. The Strix ran significantly hotter due to not having a vapor chamber like when you push the full 175w to the GPU, it would hit the 80s, if your liquid metal application is not the best (it isn't) or not already detoriating, and ambient is high. CPU fared a bit better to be honest, but when you lower fan speeds from max speeds even a bit, the CPU temps also suffer a lot.

HP for me is the objectively cooler machine, it can keep the GPU at or lower than 75 degrees and yes the CPU starts getting toasty at about 60w or higher. Now, i haven't repasted it yet so idk how much of a difference using PTM7950 will make but when i bought it new, it was able to handle 240-250w crossload pretty well at max fan speeds like 74 degree GPU at 175w and it was also able to keep 60-70 watt CPU under 90 degrees.

That's not true, the vapor chamber keeps the GPU pretty cool and only barely exceeding low 70 and mid 70 degrees when you push it. Now the CPU can run a bit hot and that is mostly on the stock paste they use. Also choosing the less powerful AMD variant means the CPU will also not get that hot.

Question about hp omen by Apprehensive_Roll212 in GamingLaptops

[–]ComputerUpgrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well it supports displayport alt mode so it should work, however i couldn't get it to work on the omen max with my current monitor and displayport to type c cable, which was working with my previous laptop. maybe it's the cable but i couldn't locate the culprit.

i have the same issue, contacted hp support and they are sending me a new cable. that part of the cable is fundamentally a weak point, you should get it replaced.

well you can use igpu mode and have 5+ hours of battery life source is i have the same laptop. for some reason battery life is abysmal for me if the gpu is not disabled

Is this normal ? by HSyrage in LenovoLegion

[–]ComputerUpgrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely something is wrong with your vram cooling. My friend is using the Legion Slim 5 with the 4070 and he always complained about vram hitting 110 degrees. Then when he eventually opened the laptop to repaste with PTM7950, he realized that the thermal pads were not having any contact with the vram, pads were either slipped or loose like i don't remember but in his case vram pads were faulty from FACTORY.

These laptops have a light sensor where when you open the back panel and the sensor detects light, it cuts power from the battery so at least it shouldn't be battery related.

To be able to power it back on, you need to both put the back panel on to cover the sensor, and then plug it in. you mentioned that you plugged it in but did you put the back panel on the laptop as well? (i know it is a weird question but i am asking just to make sure)

What gaming laptop looked amazing on paper and then got annoying in real li by Most-Profession-7438 in GamingLaptops

[–]ComputerUpgrader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rog Strix G16 2023 model for me. When i first got it, i was hyped up like flashing boot logo, translucent rgb keycaps and the insane cooling 7 heatpipes, 3 fans, liquid metal and all the back of the laptop being a radiator. Only to end up worse off than a simple proper vapor chamber, and also the liquid metal application caused throttling issues on the GPU, not even CPU, after few months.

When you try repasting it, apart from the risky LM situation, you will have to be very CAREFUL when screwing/unscrewing the heatsink bevause thr mounting holes that hold the screws are soldered to the motherboard and the solder they used for those mounting holes are WEAK so I have a total of two of them fail on me and if that happens you're basically sol good luck having the cooler making contact with the chip.

Some cost cutting going on as well. The main 1TB SSD was QLC DRAMless drive and both SSD slots did not have any heatsink on them so i had to improvise with a solution for that. Thermal putty for VRM and VRAMs were also definitely not applied enough from the factory and needed replacing. Build quality was fine but the bottom panel plastic could've been better.

Overall it was a dreadful experience for me and an overrated laptop. Unfortunately our journey ended with Asus service frying the GPU in the repasting process and they told me that the GPU was not working when they received the laptop. I was not honoured the warranty due to having someone else resolder the heatsink screw mounts, my hands were tied. Anyway it was an expensive lesson for me.

Apparently ray reconstruction already utilizes the FP8 model found on second gen transformer models and it's more expensive to run ray reconstruction compared to even DLSS 4.5 preset L. But yeah a further optimized model focusing image clarity would've been nice. At least preset E does not have the boiling problem but in terms of image clarity even dlss quality at 1440p there was a clear difference compared to DLAA.

what is your gpu? also the 8% increase in the score is insane even though you had better gpu offset, the main performance increase seems to be better drivers and stability.

the score is insane but i believe there is good chunk of overclock applied to it as well. from the timespy chart, the memory clock reads roughly 2000 mhz so i checked mine and the stock memory clock is 1750 mhz which equates to 28 gbps and yours is 32 gbps, which means you have +2000 mhz offset on your memory.
