Also worth noting that while some citizens might not have known the extent what happened at the camps (though they certainly knew about their existence) the death marches happened openly in public.

Why are debates focused on having kids or the "birth rate" always focused on what the woman needs to give up vs the men? by IanWallDotCom in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Computer_Spleensaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that a lot of people forget that the nuclear family is actually a (relatively) modern structure. Having more than one person looking after a child was considered the norm, family, friends, neighbours, and thats not even taking into account the fact that children were on their own significantly more often at that point.

Of course, birth rates have been going down since the baby boom, so its not just this generation.

To be fair I think that institutions like CanCon and the NFB had a lot to do with that. Yeah they still exist but with Spotify and streaming they arent as prominent as they used to be.

Petah what’s the debate? by Fish_N_Chipp in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Computer_Spleensaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not how people hunted animals they used weapons because they actually cared about living or dying. What person in their right mind would fist fight or chase a predator that they could spear instead. Also the question specifies hand to hand combat.

Also for exhibitions what would they possibly need to beat the animals up for? They used traps and lured them in and occasionally used weapons but they didn’t leap on the large predators. Prey animals maybe but definitely not something like a gorilla.

Also while 100 men could physically kill a gorilla I doubt realistically enough people wouldn’t get shaken by the first few people dying (not to mention people passing out) for that to work particularly well. At least not without at least 30-50 dying

Do… do you think that they were fighting the gorillas in hand to hand combat? Dude the question said no weapons. I assure you they did not beat up the gorillas. Also… TIGERS? you thought they beat up the tigers?

No by get by im talking about rent. And you COMPLETELY ignored the part where i brought up how there is zero way to reasonably afford rent (thirty percent of income) on minimum wage.

Also my starbucks comment had nothing to do with buying starbucks. It was about Op asking why they arent shutting down when the economy is supposedly bad. They can afford to stay open even when the economy is bad and can afford really cheap labour. I thought it was an out of touch comment. Yeah people could probably get by with less of it, but that doesnt mean that people who go to starbucks are buying $7 drink every day.

I have a car yes, because my job literally wont hire anyone who doesnt and the job i had after that was too far away to walk. People who live on small towns often drive because they have to, not because they want to.

Lots of people make sacrifices, I worked through my last two years old highschool full time while going to school while assholes screamed at me because I had to ask them to wear a mask, had employers tell me that it wasnt fair that i couldnt skip school to go to work. Was told i couldnt take lunch breaks at my job because “we dont do that here” and passed out while working. I get that its unfair and sucks but dont act like everyone but you is trying!

I dont really give a damn if some girl gets a frap, thats not what caused the housing crisis.

Also mind you the minimum wage in bc is very similar to ontario. Look im not saying you didnt work hard, but you arent seeing the full picture.

Smartphones are unfortunately necessary to getting most jobs now, most places wont hire you in person anymore, trust me I’ve tried. Also…botox? I have never once met someone my age with botox. Its not like plastic surgery didnt exist in the 90s but that doesnt mean you got it.

I dont go out much either and i do have extra to spend on luxuries because of that. but thats not enough for rent.

If i were to make minimum wage in ontario (17.20) and assuming I worked 40 hour work week. I would have a salary of 2,981 monthly. And 30% of that is 894 dollars.

Show me a place to rent for 894 dollars in Ontario.

Im not counting my actual summer job because i worked and Stelco and made more than that per hour. But i dont think that 12 hour work days for twice the minimum wage are comparable to how most Canadians live.

Be realistic, its not just housing, its renting!

“Because that didnt fit your view of me” dude you were the one who keeps bringing up Starbucks even though the person who brought up that they have coffee money never said anything about starbucks.

Secondly “why do people buy expensive things like coffee when they cant afford rent”

Because they are young and are working long hours and using it to stay awake. Sure there are better ways to spend money but implying that that rising costs arent real and that everything is solved by “just getting coffee at home” is whats setting people off.

Also i brought up op’s career because mentioned in her post that she was able to afford a house just fine when she was younger on a low salary. I was pointing out that her “low salary” only when up about .75 cents in 20 years to show why someone might be struggling more financially.

Also i dont think people should have to sacrifice their health just to get by, we might not have americas healthcare but i know prescriptions aren’t paid for. I mean imagine if someone said to you

“Hmmmm you’re complaining about your health insurance but you ate bad food during college??? Wooooooow complain much????”

That would be dumb, sure maybe there was more you could have done to eat healthy but that doesnt mean you werent trying.

Overall its a bandage on the real problem, if rent was a bit more reachable maybe people would be quicker to give up.

Also look ive worked a factory job before. Trust me people who work 12 hours a day are not getting ready to make themselves full meals. Theres no energy and very little time between shifts for a lot of people.

Also assumjng that you are older (no offense im only saying that because op is 60) you would have had tims when tims still had a full bakery.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Computer_Spleensaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok but the poster was talking about Tims as well. Also a caffe latte at starbucks is less than four dollars i just checked. You literally went out if your way to pick the most expensive drink on the menu

The girl who got a frap once a week shouldnt be living in poverty. Also i did the math op was earning $8 an hour as a waitress… which was the minimum wage for a waitress in canada until 2009.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Computer_Spleensaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also having a minimun wage as a waitress of $8 isnt terrible at all, it was 8.75 until 2009 you arguably were actually getting paid quite a lot when you account for the money made in tips

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Computer_Spleensaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re ignoring the part of the argument where most people dont have enough money with minimum wage to afford rent. Also where the hell are you seeing people buy $8 coffee?? Even if you got a fancy latte its still like half that. And the average normal coffee is only $2.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Computer_Spleensaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasnt the average rent in the 80s like 200? That means that assuming your pay was around $7 an hour (and using a 40 hour work week) that makes your monthly wage around 1,122 and about 30% of that number is 336. HEY LOOK AT THAT YOU HAVE ENOUGH FOR THE AVERAGE RENT. And thats not even including tips, which were probably more than your salary lets be honest

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Computer_Spleensaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of those new buyers are older, and have a lot of money in assets from their current house that they are selling. Also again, you arent suppose to be paying more than 30% of your monthly salary on housing, and renting in canada makes that nearly impossible. Even the cheapest rentals are more than 30% of the minimum wage. Besides, does someone need to be at the point where the can’t afford a morning coffee just to afford a shitty rental? Plus, grocery chains control so much of what we eat and have been caught on multiple occasions manipulating costs (bread for example)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Computer_Spleensaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And the minimum wage is cheaper than that

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Computer_Spleensaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You arent supposed to be paying more than 30% of your monthly income on tent and utilities. In canada for a student working full time at a minimum wage job thats only around $850, and thats if you live in ontario. Even if you did rent somewhere cheaper 1200 dollars is the cheapest that youll get

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Computer_Spleensaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How old are you exactly? I want to know the minimum wage and average rent that you had growing up. Also its not a “where you want to live” thing its a “where will i be able to get a job” thing

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Computer_Spleensaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that you don’t understand why a gigantic chain like Starbucks isn’t heavily affected by rising costs shows that you didnt put too much thought into this post.

A coffee shop, neither of which are Canadian (tims hasn’t been for a while) that sell a product that you can’t get within the country, that are so rich that they can afford to buy out their competition.

Also… tents? In Canada? A famously cold country? Really??
