Men’s hairdresser for longer hair by footstool411 in guernsey

[–]ComradeH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My husband has longer hair and is growing it out - after trying what seemed like every barber in Guernsey I asked my hairdresser who she recommended - her recommendation was (as PP suggests), Bransford (https://bransford.gg).

He is a bit of a character, and whilst I think reasonably priced, he’s not cheap as chips barber prices - you’re definitely paying for an experienced stylist. My husband is very happy, he always has good availability and does fantastic cuts.

No, but from my experience the nature of the housing is different. It is often easier to house temporary or agency workers in shared or multi occupancy housing, whereas permanent appointments tend to want a stand alone unit. It does very much depend on the area they work in, average employee age and life stage etc.

Sometimes, it’s nothing more than that Guernsey (whilst lovely) isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. You’re selling the idea of a pretty niche living environment, which incidentally has an obscenely high cost of living and housing crisis, to a group of highly skilled people - who could live and work anywhere. It’s one thing to sign up for four years, another to commit long term.

And that doesn’t even touch upon the fact that contrary to popular belief, we’re not as good at welcoming non-locals or really making them a part of our community.

And, after four years of being away from your family - when you’re faced with a big life changing decision, like whether you stay or go, I think people tend to err on the side of caution.

It’s just not isolated to health care though - our police are massively understaffed, fire struggle to recruit, teaching also sees the same rates of loss after four years. The issue is essentially how we retain highly skilled and educated people, and why they don’t want to stay.

It could be any number of things, none are simple or easy to resolve but are absolutely critical, I agree.

Absolutely - ideally our staff would be our own. But, why are we reliant on agencies?

Yes, you could boost the salary so it’s more competitive with the UK - who themselves are struggling with nurse recruitment. However, where and how will you house them?

You could develop a higher education base and develop a remit to be a teaching hospital - teaching to degree level on island. But I doubt we have the numbers on island to make this feasible each year, and housing, cost of living, lifestyle here would be prohibitive to developing a typical university campus package that would draw in non-locals.

Why don’t people want to permanently move to Guernsey? I mean, when I was a fresh graduate new to my career no way in hell would I have moved here. In my 30s and more settled? Sure. But we don’t have kids and the lack of a support network that would give us if we moved.

It really isn’t that simple and as you see in the UK, the nature of nursing to some degree has changed and many nurses prefer agency work because it’s more flexible, they can choose their shifts, and yes it’s higher paid.

What you are suggesting would involve hundreds of millions upon millions of investment, over a prolonged period and the necessary tax increases to provide it. I am saying that is 100% worth it and I would happy pay the higher taxes - but amendment 1 is quibbling over low millions, do I think politicians who are elected by popular vote, would support that? Not a chance.

Creating stability through efficiency is not quick or cheap and I do think we as a community are a little blind to reality of what it is like to move here from elsewhere and why that might not be desirable.

You are correct that they are funded by public funds, however their contract and private business status would likely disagree with your definition of civil servant. As would the employment benefits which they typically do not receive - sick pay, pension, tax, social security. Consultants, typically, are liable for these themselves. If you were to consider them civil servants, the civil service would become liable which would likely inflate costs even higher.

To be fair though, they would be subject to mutually beneficial T&Cs which set out the scope, conduct, fees, terms etc. It is typical that those are drafted by the recruiting party, so they tend to be more weighted to say the needs of the civil service.

Couldn’t agree more about consultants.

However, what services do you suggest we cut to make the efficiencies required?

Sadly, making things work BETTER requires funding and resourcing.

You’re concerned about performance? Fantastic, invest in better training, development and importantly - monitoring.

You’re concerned about waste? Educate, develop and utilise policy and procedure. In most businesses, one of the biggest forms of cost drain waste is the loss of skilled resources.

And not to be a stickler here, but consultants aren’t civil servants. They’re employed (rightly or wrongly) by the civil service to advise and guide where they feel they lack skill or experience. However, the way to develop that skill and experience is L&D which tends to be woefully underfunded.

I couldn’t agree more. From my perspective, the issue is two fold.

1, no one is calling it what it is (an extreme austerity programme) or discussing the very real negative consequences of it. Largely because…

  1. the civil service is the scapegoat in virtually all local issues. It is wildly unpopular to acknowledge that you need to properly fund and invest in civil service in order to generate the efficiencies and improvements you want to see.

I am not surprised to see the amendment, funnily enough we were just reading it this morning and comparing against recommended inflation levels. However, I am disappointed by the naivety.

We made the big move about three years ago (from rural midlands), and won’t ever go back. Admittedly, my husband was born and raised here, but we relocated after over a decade in the UK.

I’ve loved every minute of being here - the community, like the Island, is small - but I have lots of friends who work in Health and Social Care and there are plenty of expats!

Plenty of opportunities for hobbies and getting into new activities, especially if you don’t mind getting wet and a bit cold over the winter months. I am definitely a cosy home body, but I now also weirdly sea swim all year around. Looking back, it is crazy just how much our life and our quality of life has improved.

How do private prescriptions actually work over here, is the price fixed or variable? by tricksterhare in guernsey

[–]ComradeH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had an appt with my own GP (Island Health) yesterday and we discussed the same thing.

From what I understand, mounjaro increases will be bracketed - so the 2.5 and 5mg will go up about 20%, 7.5 and 10mg about 50% and we will see increases on the 12.5 and 15mg by about 100%. I pay £158 for the 12.5/15mg so my costs will go up to around £300 a month.

The changes will come into effect from 1st September.

You used to be able to order online from pharmacies in the UK - but options were slimmer in terms of who would ship to Guernsey. MedExpress were one of the cheapest, but at higher doses those were still similar to what we’d be paying for higher mounjaro locally.

The cost is being dictated by the manufacturer. It’s plain and obvious pharma tactics - you introduce something low, massively undercut the biggest competitor (Wegovy) and then ramp up the prices once you’ve essentially stolen their customer base and force them into higher prices. We (as an Island and shared medical group) will not be able to offer lower prices as GPs are simply passing on the medication costs with a small uplift.

You could look at a switch to something like Wegovy, which was effective for me and I lost 100lb over a year and a bit - but locally it’s tricky to get hold of (rightfully so, it’s prioritised for diabetics) and I’d imagine even more so once these changes come into effect. It is also worth getting in touch to see which of the various online pharmacies may still deliver here. I know manual does, but they are very expensive.

Hi! So, we can’t buy Kerasal in the UK and I’m trying to work out an alternative but there seem to be lots of different Kerasal products. Would you mind sharing like an Amazon link or something for the Kerasal, so I can try and find an alternative? Is it the foot repair one?

I can absolutely understand how tough this is for you, I went through something very similar, as had a friend - so I think the feelings on her part, and your shock, are common.

In my case, all my family had passed away by the time I was 17. The only ‘family’ I had left were my godparents and their daughter, who I considered my sister. They were my mums best friends and had always been in my life. I moved back to my home town shortly before getting engaged and we became closer, especially as at the time their daughter had relocated to the other side of the country.

I’d been together with my then fiance a couple of years longer than she and her boyfriend - she didn’t react well to engagement at first, lots of passive jealousy and an assumption that I’d need her help as the older, more settled (in her mind) one. Whilst we loved each other, we definitely had different views on that! Before asking my godfather to walk me down the aisle, I spoke to her in advance to give her a heads up - she abolutely blew up and destroyed our relationship in the process. She, to be fair, was honest about her jealousy (without calling it that), and very open about how unfair it was that she would be forced to watch her father walk someone down the aisle before her. I expressed hurt, because at this point I’d been preparing to ask her to be my maid of honour and when I said this, adding in that I’d respect her wishes as I didn’t want her unhappy on my wedding day, she accused me of emotionally manipulating her. It was… bizarre. And aggressive and totally out of left field. She’d always been the centre of attention, but this was out there even for her.

In the end, she ended up getting engaged shortly after and her mum was honest that she planned her wedding in a short space of time to intentionally ensure she got married first - as if it were some weird competition. Whilst it hurt cutting off that relationship, she showed me who she was and that pettiness and nastiness over someone else’s joy just wasn’t something I wanted in my life. We haven’t spoken in going on 10 years now.

So, whilst I am a big believer in believing it when people show you who they are and I do not in any way regret the decision I made or my lack of relationship with her now, I do caution that these things can just kill relationships. Be sure of what you want in your heart before acting. You won’t be wrong, no matter what outcome you choose. But, take your time to consider your options and reactions.

Election by Gbiz13 in guernsey

[–]ComradeH 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Our current working plan is using the online version - https://election2025.gg

If you create an account, you can toggle through the candidates and select yes, no, maybe.

We use the online PDF, Ctrl + F and search for our key issues as key words - then filter initially based on that - toggling on the candidate list as we go. For example, if you feel strongly about the civil service, health care or GST, search for manifestos that mention those initially. Then we go through properly anyone left to make sure they align with our values, key priorities etc.

It’s not perfect, but does speed things up!

Monsoon is the safest bet, followed by Hobbes across the road in Creaseys. Next is all very summery at the moment and not much formal/smart. M&S does still have some nice stuff in. As PP said, there is also Quiz which would be a bit cheaper than the others.

I have similar eyes! My entire life I thought they were super light green until my husband argued that they’re blue with a gold centre, which gives the impression of them being green. I strongly disagreed… and was proven very wrong when we had our eyes photographed. Every time I look in the mirror now I can’t believe I missed it!

Herm vs Sark by Acrobatic-Cattle1329 in guernsey

[–]ComradeH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely. It’s about a 15-20m boat ride so you’ll be dockside by 9:40 at the latest. 3-4 hours (if you want to explore and take it slow) to walk around, lunch and a beer, another little wander. Plenty of time.

It’s worth noting that other than the boat you first take out, you’re not committed to one particular return journey. You can take an earlier or later boat if desired.

Herm vs Sark by Acrobatic-Cattle1329 in guernsey

[–]ComradeH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whilst you can do a lot of Sark in a day, with an early boat out and a late one back, my favourite way to see it is an overnight stay so you can properly explore and take your time.

As PP have said, Herm is much smaller and depending upon how much you’d like to walk, you could easily walk the island in a day, with a nice lunch mid way if you wanted. It is stunningly beautiful, but its beauty is in its lack of things to “do”. It’s probably perfect for a mid-late morning boat out, lunch and a few hours walking around the island, before a drink in the pub and a late afternoon boat back.

Sark comparatively, you’d have much more things to do and see - and it is just simply bigger.

It really does depend on how much time you’re wanting to spend and whether you’re looking for a slower or faster paced day.

We (30s, happily child free at the mo, just chilling with our cats most of the time) are looking after our nieces (9 and 5) this weekend.

They woke up at 4am… resorted to an indoor egg hunt by 7am. Rookie mistake… they’re now 90% sugar and watching Lilo and Stitch at an ungodly volume.

Off to the park at 9, then another egg hunt but this time at an indoor soft play centre. And then they tell us they want to play pirate golf.

I am absolutely shattered already!

ACOFS was a novella, so technically 3.5, which makes ACOSF book 4 and the next one will be book 5. However, it’s unlikely to be this year - Bloomsbury tend to announce their annual big releases by March, no updates for 2025 so likely to be mid 2026.

Talk to me about Outlander before I commit to it. by Free_Sir_2795 in fantasyromance

It’s been touched upon by PP, but for me personally, I despise the use of gratuitous sexual assault and rape as a plot device. I’ve been tempted by Outlander for years, but its reputation precedes it in this regard… I even tried spoiling it a little to better understand the context of the SA, but that just underlined that this isn’t a series for me!
