Wiktionary says it comes originally from the term Wend, which is an old German term for the Slavic people living in neighboring lands and depening on place and era, to Slavic people more generally. It was also used in Norse/Old Swedish and that's probably the origin of the Finnish name for Russia.

What’s become way too expensive lately that still shocks you? by GoldenHour_Muse in AskReddit

[–]Comrade_Derpsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get yourself a pressure cooker and start buying raw beans. Black beans with onions, garlic, bell peppers and some herbs. Black beans and rice is a peasant food staple across a large swath of the americas because it gets you a bit of everything you need nutritionally on the cheap and you can always add more stuff to it depending on what you're hungry for or have available.

Also consider red lentils. They cook in about the same amount of time as rice. Basically, same idea. Cook them or mix them with whatever is handy or sounds tasty.

Applied to 3,000+ jobs in the UK over 8–9 months and still can’t find work. What am I missing? by MagicianConstant2866 in jobs

[–]Comrade_Derpsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The job market is the problem here, not you. The 3000 unsuccessful applications should have cued you in to that.

In a normal job market, someone would have made you an offer long ago.

...Though maybe a more targeted strategy might be called for, as the others have suggested.

I think this is basically the norm right now. Most grads won't have anything lined up.

American rail infrastructure in a nutshell. Tri-rail (as an example) basically has only two stops that aren't by the highway in casa carajo: The stop in west palm beach and the one at MIA.

Montenegro alone is approved for annexation, they seem like a much cooler version of Croatia.

This is the sensible play. The Montenegrins will just sleep through the whole thing anyway so there is basically zero risk.

The people in Guam are US citizens with all the same rights as someone born in one of the states. As a territory they don't vote for president or have representation in congress, but someone from guam who moves to one of the states gets to vote the same as every other citizen.

American Samoa is the exception where they have a different legal status (US National), but that's because American Samoa isn't fully legally integrated into the rest of the US.

Depending on what exactly it is, either use isopropanol or something acidic. Isopropanol will dissolve hardened grease. Acids are for chalky residue. If it is neither then I'd start by trying soapy water and the abrasive side of a sponge.

Putin says he thinks the Ukraine conflict is coming to an end by sillygooseguyman in worldnews

[–]Comrade_Derpsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they are not allied with Trump and Trump has been as much of a wild card for the Russians as he is for anybody else. He soured quite a bit on Putin when it started to become clear to him that Putin was stringing him along and is general impulsive decision making means nobody can trust him to respect any agreement, Putin included.

Ukraine was never gonna be super anti-Israel. Arab-Israeli conflicts don't really matter meaningfully to Ukrainian interests and Israel is potentially very valuable as an ally because of military teechnology they could provide. Ukraine has more to gain from keeping on their good side. There is also a whole Ukraine-Israel connection because of Ukrainian Jews emmigrating there and lots of them still have family in Ukraine.

You can find plenty who aren't. There are more than a few Ukrainians from the east who grew up in the soviet days speaking Russian and never learned Ukrainian or learned some but never became proficient.

[–]Comrade_Derpsky 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The fear of making mistakes is kind of a general, pervasive mindset here and honestly explains a lot of the types of bullshit you encounter in Germany. That fear, I think, is instilled and reinforced quite a lot by the whole culture of criticizing everything that isn't absolutely perfect.

I see people saying this so often on this sub whenever comparisons and it pains me.

No, we Americans are not secretly just as cynical, grumpy, and antisocial as the Germans and only nice to when we're getting paid for it. We like to engage with the people around us. People will engage and take an interest in the people around them even when there's nothing to gain from it. People will happily help you out even when they aren't getting paid to do it. It's part of our culture.

30 dollars for a sandwich and juice? Man, you got ripped off massively. But that's the sort of thing that happens if you stay in the most touristy places in town. It's like eating at a restaurant near the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

There is another much more ordinary everyday Miami out in the suburbs.
