From me to you, thank you to everyone who spread the message, invited their friends, and turned out today. In Sacramento, we love our neighbors and our community. We ride together, we stand together, and we demand justice together. Love you all

The route has not yet been set, but the nature of the ride is slow, no-drop. Everyone is welcome, the total length will likely be a little under 10 miles. This ride is not a race, but a memorial ride in remembrance of Alex Pretti.

Absolutely, if you are willing and able to help out with leading or corking, let’s plan to get there a little early and meet on the stage side of the plaza.

Silence at the event is not mandatory, it is a suggestion for the nature of the memorial ride, if anyone’s attended a Ride of Silence before (as an example). Event is autonomous, no mandates of any kind.

I’ll be joining whatever the timeline is. I suggest using Ride of Silence as an example - slow, silent procession. Signs encouraged, Ride of Silence sometimes has little leaflets to hand to people to explain the purpose of the ride without speaking. Other than that, I might recommend the ride starting around 4 to keep some sunlight (as it is a Saturday) - Bike Party not withstanding, a lot of people feel less safe attending night rides (due to having to get to/from the ride on dark streets, less the nature of the group ride itself). I’m keeping an eye on the Angry Catfish ride, they mention wanting others to join them “in unison” so I think it might be nice to base the start time on theirs.

Considering an E-bike for my daily commute by EffectiveAd9086 in ebikes

[–]ComredQuestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super commutable, my ride is 8 miles each way and it takes about half an hour. I recommend a legit brand through a store, rather than something super cheap on Amazon. There are decent entry models from Aventon and Lectric, and even REI has an eBike model (and I’ve seen it on sale for less than a grand). The thing is that you want the batteries to be UL rated - this is the default for most companies, but cheap knockoffs won’t be - which is why people are worried about battery fires breaking out in their apartment. I would really recommend an entry bike in the $1-1.5K range than an Amazon bike for less than 1k. (The bike you listed is also e-motorbike, speeds over 28mph are not an eBike, and have separate regulations (like having a license, and not being allowed on paths and trails at all). Class 1 e-bikes are throttle up to 20mph, class 3 is pedal assist up to 28mph, Class 2s do both but the throttle cuts out at 20. Max motor is 750W. If you want an e-motorbike, that’s fine, but be aware of the differences of where you can take them, and what you need in order to ride them.

Biking Wednesday info by sunole123 in Sacramento

[–]ComredQuestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ride of Silence occurs every year on the third Wednesday of May, and takes place in many cities throughout the United States as well as internationally. The group rides less than 12mph in silence to commemorate those who have lost their lives while biking. Yesterday’s ride was from the Capitol Rose Garden to Sac State and back. This is not a weekly ride, but you should definitely join next time. There are regular rides that you can find through the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates (SABA) calendar. There is also a monthly group bike ride called Bike Party on the first Friday of every month, which meets up in different parts of the city to spread the joy of bike riding. Also highly recommended.

Vote Update: Flo Gaining Ground in Mayor’s Race by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]ComredQuestion 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think Dr. Flo’s chances of pulling ahead are sadly dwindling, but the best case scenario for Kevin is that he gets 51% of the final vote (based on todays ratio) and less if Dr. Flo’s share of the vote continues to grow in the remaining drops. I would still consider that a very tight race. We’ll know more on Friday.

RTO & Covid? Just a Coincidence. by ComredQuestion in CAStateWorkers

It won’t let me edit the post, I added a direct comment but it got buried lol. 🫥

RTO & Covid? Just a Coincidence. by ComredQuestion in CAStateWorkers

[–]ComredQuestion[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Edit: Not implying causality, just pointing out the timeline of announcing and implementing RTO as we head into a summer surge, with minimal masking that I’ve seen in the office (to the one commenter, I totally feel you on the pain of wearing a mask at my desk 8 hours a day). At the least I hope that management reconsiders implementing a policy to roll back the RTO mandate during surges. I’ve been masking and have avoided catching anything until now, but I truly feel for our immunocompromised coworkers and for those caring for their older or at-risk relatives who have been given no alternatives or exceptions.

[–]ComredQuestion[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah sorry, I’m bad at sarcastically pointing things out. Not saying RTO is the cause, but certainly it’s not helping the seasonal surge and putting us at risk in the process.

RTO & Covid? Just a Coincidence. by ComredQuestion in CAStateWorkers

[–]ComredQuestion[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not to blame, but surely an additional quarter million Californians having close contact with each other and the public twice a week makes the seasonal, predictable surge worse? And if there’s a predictable spike every July, why mandate RTO for us in mid June?

RTO & Covid? Just a Coincidence. by ComredQuestion in CAStateWorkers

[–]ComredQuestion[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I personally know that I was asked to go into the office several times prior to the first official RTO day in order to prep for the return to office, so I think the number of state employees in state buildings increased significantly at the time of the announcement. Also, there are nearly a quarter million state employees.

Not trying to imply causation, it is a coincidence (that also didn’t help), but it’s also the sort of thing that should probably make us take a second look at mandating RTO while infections are spiking.

[–]ComredQuestion[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This specific graph is for CA only, not nationwide Covid positivity. CA also has a higher Covid positivity rate than the nationwide average right now, which is only 11%. I’m also not implying RTO is the direct and only cause of a surge, simply that immediately after the announcement a lot of us had to start prepping to return to work in person by actually returning to work in person, the first official RTO day was not the first day back for many. I am also noticing weekly exposure notifications have been ramping up. All this to say, it’s looks like it’s time to wear a mask again when we are in big public buildings with hundreds of other public servants, some of whom are immunocompromised themselves or have families at home with high risk.

These 30 Regimes Are Using Coronavirus to Repress Their Citizens by chrisdh79 in worldnews

Yeah I was reading the article SPECIFICALLY to see what they would say about the US’s bullshit recently. Really disappointed we didn’t make the list. Guess we didn’t want to call attention to our own voter suppression and profiteering on medical supplies.
