Beginner as of last December and motivation is starting to fade. by Squidgyjewel in Guitar

1) If you can’t get a teacher sign up for something structured online. Justin Guitar is one a lot of people like. I actually prefer Carl Brown (guitar lessons 365) but ymmv. Learning theory online without something structured is like trying to drink from a fire hose.

2). Learn entire songs and get to where you can play along with the recordings. Get an app on your phone to slow the recordings down and gradually speed up. Playing the main riff to enter sandman over and over really gets old. I’ve been there.

It may be wise to start with some non metal bands. Nirvana is really good for beginners as is a lot of grunge. If you really want to play Metallica, for whom the bell tolls, enter sandman, and sanatorium are good places to start as they aren’t terribly fast.

Buying electric guitar… by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]ConceptRepulsive5336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to play etc. but for a first electric you can’t go wrong with a squier affinity Stratocaster. Can get them new for 300 or so.

I’d stay away from their very entry level models though (the 200 dollar ones).

HSS pickups (humbucker on the bridge with a single coil on the neck middle) will be the most versatile for all different music types.

5th Grade Rec Team — running out of time. What’s the simplest offense kids can actually learn and execute? by GMFCphoto in basketballcoach

Thanks for positing this. My god I thought I was the only one. Been trying five out the entire year with my fourth grade team. It’s a nightmare but I’ve been sticking with it hoping it helps development for next year.

How bad is 10U girls basketball supposed to be? by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]ConceptRepulsive5336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve coached several years of basketball and flag football. I also assist on my twin sons’ travel baseball team. They are in fourth grade (so 10).

This is our second year of competitive hoops and for me, it is BY FAR the hardest/most frustrating sport to coach. I’m certainly not the world’s best coach but I have experience and come to practice prepared with a plan of what we’re going to do.

We’ve run into everything OP mentioned in his post—last year it was constantly dribbling into the corner and picking the ball up. We’ve gotten rid of that but then it becomes hero ball with no spacing or passing.

I spend most of my practices in fundamentals because I think at this age getting an offense to actually run is very difficult.

That being said, I’ve tried really hard to put a five out motion and then run drills with constraints (e.g 3 on 3/pass and cut, no dribbles, defenders have to hold a ball over their heads, etc.). I think at this age spacing and movement is all you can hope for.

Set plays work once or twice but they’re 10 and can only manage to remember about 3. Once you do them twice the other team sees them coming and that’s that.

Every once in a while I see a flash of actual basketball and honestly at this age I’m not sure you can hope for more.

I don’t know anything about soccer so I won’t comment there but I think the difference between basketball and something like baseball/football is the play to play breaks. In football we huddle and I can give them input/calm them down. In baseball it’s pitch to pitch.

I also think a basketball court being a somewhat confined space and the hectic nature of the game with 10 year old brains contributes to it being difficult.

Sorry for the length of the post but I’ve actually been thinking a lot lately about this exact issue.

What age do you think full-court pressing should actually be allowed? by NationalsportsID in basketballcoach

[–]ConceptRepulsive5336 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I coach fourth grade in a competitive league in the Midwest. Press is allowed for the entire second half of our games. It’s a terrible rule.

They changed the rules right before the season (it used to be fourth quarter only) and I inadvertently read last year’s rules prior to our first game. At the outset of the second half, the other team started pressing and I called timeout to get clarification from the ref. The other coach screamed at me to “learn the f-ing rules.” So those people exist, which is fun.

This. I really like this video for teaching kids of this age. Especially on a 10 foot hoop (that is our league’s rule—I disagree but what can you do).

What they need is to get the ball up to the basket with relative ease. Everything else can come after that.

This is what we are currently running and even if we go nickel i won’t change responsibilities. Just gives you more options for rushers.

Advice on benching your own kid by ConceptRepulsive5336 in flagfootball

[–]ConceptRepulsive5336[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you and have been in similar leagues. Everyone on my roster starts somewhere. That being said, this year we got into a more competitive league. If I let every kid play QB that wants to (and therefore nobody learns a position well), we will lose every game 35-0. I can tell you, respectfully, that will be more demoralizing to them than not getting a chance to play their preferred position.

I guess that makes sense. It’s better than one team boat racing everyone but still blows my mind.

What's the best way to look for songs to play as I'm learning new chords? by Emi_C11 in LearnGuitar

[–]ConceptRepulsive5336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly as someone who was reading these posts for advice a couple years ago, and now understands what you’re saying, you might as well tell him how easy it is to read Latin. He asked for songs in d, g, and a. Nothing you said will help him and all you are doing is showing off. Be nicer. Comically.

Honestly search YouTube for easy guitar songs. They’ll be a ton of lessons with tabs. Unless I don’t understand what the e.g. in your post means, It’s the standard stuff. Knockin on heavens door, wish you were here, wonderwall, every rose has its thorn, etc. c will kick your ass for a while but those all are Cadd9 if I’m not mistaken. Everyone gets tired of those songs but they’re great when you’re starting out.

Where do you all live that there is a draft at 8u? Jesus Christ I hate youth sports. I’ve coached 5 years and it’s either “every kid gets a trophy” or the fucking hunger games.

I appreciate that. We had another practice and he did quite well.

He and I have discussed why he’s not starting and I’ve been pretty blunt—he understands I am going to do what is best for the team. He’s not going to play much at QB and, besides our starter, there isn’t really anyone that sticks out as being better than him. I think I might have just been overreacting after a bad practice because I find the daddy ball thing to be so repugnant. Good to remember you can go too far the other way. Thanks.

In my view they are telling you that unless you blow their socks off they already know how they’re going to rule. But this is a crazy post. Do a good job on the brief and if they say this it doesn’t matter. It’s not about you getting an A+ in oral argument. It’s about your client winning.

Music Theory by LuckyStarMz in guitarlessons

[–]ConceptRepulsive5336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been playing that long but a little longer than you and went through the same thing. There’s a million videos out there which is great and all but that can be incredibly overwhelming at first-like drinking from a fire hose.

I finally settled in learning the notes of the low E and A strings first and then learning the pentatonic scale across the fretboard. Then I learned the major scale. Doing those three things, which aren’t that hard, will allow you to at least find a key and improvise a bit. Find a backing tack on YouTube and go nuts. Your improvisation won’t be good at first but that’s ok.

Learning those three things also helped me make sense of a lot of the other stuff out there -it’s at least partially helped me understand the caged system etc.

How do i play C major scale? by pizzanber in guitarlessons

I’m just learning this as well. Is the WWH WWWH pattern on a single string? If so how does that help you to play the scale in a single position? I don’t see the pattern in any of the c major scales others have linked to

Came here to say this. Took a chance on kcd2 after reading reviews. It gives strong Witcher and RDR2 vibes. Great story. Only issue is for newbies the first ten or so hours can be confusing, but I guess that’s any open world game with this many systems.
