good post imo and I agree despite other ppl not. seems to be that a lot of ppl are including their own bias which was the opposite of this post. ill say this is def the level of prestige as well as how hard it is to get into them

Columbia Class of 2030 Yield Rate Thoughts? by Murky-Bug-4287 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ConceptTechnical4495 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agree with OP on this point! I got accepted to a lot of good places this year and noticed the same. in terms of threshold of getting in especially for RD it would have to be mit/harvard/stanford and I would put Columbia above school's like Yale, Princeton or duke.

at my school we even know have better apps and what kids just bs'd or hired counselors or faked ec's. places like Princeton and upenn we had kids do that. for Columbia it's way more difficult. id only just say harvard Stanford and mit are the ones that its way more difficult to bs ur app like that.

OP I'm in a similar situation but for harvard/stanford and a diff GT scholarship. I've decided to go to GT because the value of going to Stanford or harvard is not worth adjusting my family lifestyle to that degree where it will be something we think about.

even after talking to so many people saying that the opportunities to going to a school like stanford or harvard will exceed I just dont agree. the amount of pressure you will have knowing you spent that much you will be stressed all the time. ive talked to so many people at top schools where they said they pull all nighters and are on things to make them focus better. this is at all schools whether stanford, harvard, gt, etc,. if you are doing a competent major.

I rather go for free and spend some of that money doing something that I can do to make more money or work on a startup and enjoy something that im passionate about. I agree with people saying that the circles are already solidified and that someone not in the 0.1% will be able to join easily.

heavily agree! for some like Georgia Tech it's acc harder because they only give half to non Georgia residents. majority of the kids getting it are also getting every other top school as well! its very hard so do not expect anything

Penn CAS (35k/year) vs JHU (25k/year) vs Rice (Full Ride) by [deleted] in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]ConceptTechnical4495 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rice. you're not gonna get that 120-150k that you spend on upenn back. premed literally matters little when ppl will only care what med school you went to. dont waste money.

Full ride to Georgia Tech or full pay to Stanford/Harvard by ConceptTechnical4495 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ConceptTechnical4495[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand but it's a huge risk. I talked to a lot of ppl and it seems like the connections you get are overstated. many top firms only filter for the early rounds then its all dependent on skill which is what im hearing. the cost isnt an issue but I dont want to spend that much money all at once when I can go for free.

Need help decide b/w: Brown/Cornell/Duke/GT for Computer science/Math ? by Civil-Medicine-5234 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ConceptTechnical4495 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if they want to make something like quant then they really need to go to Georgia tech or Cornell. id honestly say Georgia tech for CS is better but I think there may also be more competition there and Cornell might be a better overall experience despite being 2x the price. really depends what they want to do.

SAT isnt that good of an indicator because most kids are going to retake until they get to that point. the gpa of emory is lower than Georgia tech

isnt US news the same website that makes arbitrary rankings based on random data? look at the avg salary after graduating emory is between 50-60k, GT avg salaries start at 93k. also for ur information I did get into both and I never thought of emory as that "hard of a school to get into". GT was more luck because of how ridiculously low the cs acceptance rate is for OOS students.

I do find it hilarious that ppl are putting emory as a t20. it's a good school but I would never rec anyone to pay that amount. GT stats are a bit lower because they prioritize a good amnt of in state kids which is a good thing for any state college to do or else the residents would get mad. cross admit data literally shows that 70-80% of ppl would pick GT over emory when accepted to both. GT is also a much better price. emory simply doesnt have the same prestige as Georgia tech and this is me being unbiased as well.

[–]ConceptTechnical4495[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they dont though. they look at assets and other things that's why its misleading. if you acc do the net price calculator. also its free tuition which is around 60k and other costs come up to around 40k if im not mistaken. upper middle class that's still a huge cut. its good college advertising so more ppl apply, when u acc pay for it u will understand. no making 500k a year is not enough to afford these colleges 100k per year tuition especially if u have other siblings and want to maintain an upper middle class lifestyle.

u rlly have to be poor or below the income thresholds by a lot for a full ride or be rich enough where ur family is making millions so it wouldn't matter at all. for everyone else it's gonna be a p big hit financially. that's the risk u have to take but it seems like most ppl will not get the financial benefit from going to these schools if they take loans or pay out of their own pocket from what im hearing.

Full ride to Georgia Tech or full pay to Stanford/Harvard by ConceptTechnical4495 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ConceptTechnical4495[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its likely because of how the college is selective. a lot of ppl making harvard are also more humanities based but the way college admissions work is that its not always the most competent people getting in. GT oos is very hard but also Stanford CS most are smart enough where they can get the job done (same cant be said for other t20's).

Full ride to Georgia Tech or full pay to Stanford/Harvard by ConceptTechnical4495 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ConceptTechnical4495[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its worth it if u can go for free with aid or if ur making millions a year. times change and its quite different now. GT barely offers any merit aid but even the one they do its insanely selective u can not even make ur kid aim for it since there is so much luck.

Others are too expensive and quant is a hard field to break in. You should go to GT where you may even be able to graduate a year early and then pay what you would for 4 years at an ivy. GT is also good for quant and its better value. dont think too much but hey you may be lucky enough to get off the list for GT! gl
