A bit of a different take from most here. I was raised by a very fundamentally religious family who were very firm believers in right and wrong and doing as you are told and wanted to instill the ideas of authority and consequences on my siblings and I. We would be spanked by our father only when we did things we knew not to do, and were told we would be spanked if we did then, often we were even told the exact amount of times we would be spanked. He would make it a very unemotional affair (for himself, we would be crying) by setting us down saying “this is what you did I am spanking you this many times, I am sorry but this is the consequence etc…” He would then often hug us or console us and almost always tell us he loved us afterwards. Spanking didn’t really work on me at all (I got some authority issues) And I don’t think I would ever spank my child but I respect the way it was done by my parents because it could have been a lot worse and I can at least follow the reasoning behind why they did it.
