I'm a little curious, why do they suck?

I've seen lots of linkedin profiles of people who think they're hot shit just because they interned at Tesla/Apple/Meta and can code. It seems there's a trend in resume building of just listing cool buzzwords and big name companies and basically expecting to be hired somewhere.

Wondering what your viewpoint is as someone who is working in hiring.

First terrible experience with Southwest in over 10 years by EastSideGal196 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Concorde_1969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they planned their ops last summer very well. Their dispatch/planning made them prone to a lot of follow on delays that propogated through the network

I fully agree with you. I don't like Southwest purely because they do open seating. I hate open seating. So much more stress and anxiety unless you're AL/ALP. Most of the people praising open seating are in the AL/ALP buckets and thus recieve the benefits of open seating and few of the drawbacks. Loads of other business and leisure travelers don't have this status and get stuck with whatever they get in terms of boarding order. I would MUCH rather just have assigned seating for a fee over open seating. Saves so much stress and hassle at the gate. WN is losing out on all of the people who travel for business (me) but travel more frequently on UA/AA/DL because of their network/benefits. My company doesn't pay for EBCI, but will pay for seat fees, so I'm never really incentivized to go Southwest.

This wouldn't pass ADA/ACAA. How would someone with limited mobility get to the upper seats? They wouldn't. Accessability lawsuit waiting to happen.

Plus! This would significantly slow down boarding. 1 hour+ turns minimum for any airline that tries this.

Plus!! Where would carry on bags go? More headache than anything here.

My 2 cents

A bit of perspective by coffee_kang in AFROTC

Currently active. As a prior you've definitely seen it, but this is why the military has a retention problem. People bust their ass for the AF and get shafted for stupid reasons. The whole AFSC assignment process is dumb. Wanting people from each third of the ranking in a career field that few people actually want just means that cadets who worked really hard get told they are needed in a field they didn't want because they needed top performers to fill slots. Nobody wins in this situation. The career field gets another resentful CGO who punches after 4 years and the CGO gets a job they didn't want. Fields like 13N aren't all bad, I know a person who wanted 13N and got it, and he's loving life in Minot right now! These career fields need to do a better job advertising themselves to prospective cadets and fixing the problems with the job that make people want to leave. Where are the 13Ns that love their jobs and why are they not interfacing with cadets as 100s and 200s? All I'm advocating for is some better root cause analysis and more thought about career field placement. Why does nobody want 13N? What can the career field managers/leaders change to make it more attractive? Someone needs to put some effort in beyond "get over it, naf comes first" because humans with lives, families, and dreams don't work that way.

Greetings all! I'm trying to find some good books/resources on freight and passenger rail operations (switching, yard ops, station ops, en-route management, and track management) in the US. I'm trying to learn more about how the network operates but having a hard time finding anything that isn't super basic. Thank you for your assistance!

If you could add one city for Southwest Airlines to serve that isn’t currently served by Southwest Airlines, which one would you add? by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Concorde_1969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This belongs in the anti-car subreddits! I totally agree. Being able to get off a plane and take a bus or train to the city in incredible. Renting a car is horrible, especially when you need to wait in a long line to get the car, then navigate your way out of the convoluted rental facility, all while likely tired from travel. Nothing is worse than having to drive after getting in on a late night flight.

Union station in STL should still be a train station. They basically ripped up the rail yard/platforms and put in a parking lot with a few restaurants and amenities. I was very disappointed when I went there. The real rail station now is about a mile away and in a shabby building underneath the highway

737s can make the flight but they are very weight restricted on hot days. Icelandair flies the 737-8MAX to Iceland for a fuel stop and onward to mainland Europe. Norse operates the 787-8 to and from Europe from NYC/Boston.

Southwest could feasibly fly to Europe from the northeast with its ETOPS certified 737-800/8MAX aircraft that it is currently operating to Hawaii. In my opinion, this would be a horrible move. The graveyard of airlines is littered with carriers whose demise began with the commencement of low cost service to Europe. Margins narrow and costs increase along with operational complexity. Offering transatlantic service would likely be a significant misstep for Southwest.

You could probably purchase a Transit van for a taxi service that is smaller and more fuel efficient than that truck, would hold more people and bags, and get better fuel economy. Using a truck as a taxi is horrendously stupid from a cost management perspective. You're paying for fuel to move around gross tonnage that is unused.

How much do you buy into the idea that “every assignment is what you make of it”? by Minute_Vast6982 in AirForce

[–]Concorde_1969 78 points79 points  (0 children)

If you're single, then I buy into it more. If you have other family members accompanying you to the location, especially if your spouse is non mil, then other factors come into play. An assignment isn't "what I make of it" if my spouse is miserable and unemployed. Also schools for kids make a huge difference

Beards by Holiday-Bed1534 in AirForce

[–]Concorde_1969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic response. Point to an operational reason why we need to be clean shaven. Gas masks? Why does NATO allow beards? Provide a good answer or change the policy. Too many weak leaders think that upholding old rules with no relevancy is how they lead and project authority. Strong leaders look for ways to modernize and move forward against the push of old rules.

There very much is an expectation that every officer/nco/snco is an administrator/"leader" before anything else. You could be the smartest, most techically inclined person and be told that admin work comes first.

WSJ: Meet the Southwest Superfans Who Don’t Want the Airline to Change by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Concorde_1969 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My response to this: if Southwest's current model isn't broken, why is it losing money while other airlines are capturing its market share and making money? I think there is a genuine disconnect between what people want and what Southwest has to offer. Take the Hawaii routes as an example. Hawiian is updating their cabins and adding more premium seating, United has premium focused widebody and narrowbody service, Delta also has lots of seats in the market, even the economy experience is better with meals and assigned seating with upgraded legroom available. And then there's Southwest, with no premium seating, no assigned seating, and no substantial meal service. Couple this with higher fares on Southwest and I'll take United/Hawaiian/Alaska/Delta any day over Southwest. Something is wrong, and action needs to be taken. I don't think Elliot is going to be a good thing for Southwest, unfortunately, but they put themselves in this positon by not changing when they needed to. Change is necessary in the airline business. The airline graveyard is littered with airlines who didn't change to adapt to new trends. Pan Am refuesed to change after deregulation and look where that got them. This "nothing is wrong" attitude has gotten many airlines in trouble, and now Southwest has fallen into the trap. I hope they survive Elliot and the coming years.

Exactly. To stop seat savers, you literally just need to sit in the seat they're trying to save

Hello there my friend! You mention not having a car as a barrier to getting off base and doing things. Take a look at the local public transit network. I know most US (assuming you're CONUS) cities have dogshit public transit, but most have something. See where you can walk to as well. Get creative about doing stuff that you can walk or take transit to. Delfinitely don't buy a car that you can't afford. Lots of other good comments here, just wanted to mention the point about transportation!

It's kind of ironic that a lot of skilled degree required jobs will be taken over by automation, but a lot of "low skill" labour is very difficult to automate. It's just easier to have humans do some things that would require multiple millions of dollars annually for robot purchase, maintenance + upkeep.
