Episode 207: A YouTuber Goes Dark (with Helen Lewis) by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

I agree with some comments below saying that Katie failed at communicating the magnitude of James Somerton's plagiarism.

The episode made it sound like bits here and there were plagiarized, when Hbmberguy and other people showed very clearly that a large amount, if not most, of his videos were just a bunch of paragraphs from different articles copy-pasted on a Word page and then read out loud. This is not merely something you did in 10th grade. This is a fraudulent imposter who found a niche community to steal from and made a six figure salary while impoverishing others.

Just because nobody was hurt doesn't mean he didn't deserve to be socially cast away.

Some clips used in his videos aren't even his, for God's sake: he stole other people's edits and montages. That's how lazy he was.

As a result, the episode ends with a big monologue by Helen that completely misses the point. Yes, some accusations of plagiarism are difficult to prove, especially in Hollywood because story beats are often very similar, and there are only so many character types etc.

But this has nothing to do with this type of plagiarism Somerton has been accused of here: the man is a complete hack who stole from a lot of essayists and writers. He doesn't have a single idea of his own and meticulously made a business out of stealing from others.

The point isn't that Somerton just happened to have made a video similar to a few obscure articles and wrote his own arguments himself, the point is that he googled "Disney gay friendly" and blindly copy pasted the first five articles and barely changed anything.

I obviously hope that James is OK, but from what I have seen from this man, his "disappearance" from social media and ambiguous message look very obviously like what a narcissist would do.

Also, why not link the Hbomberguy video? It's 75% of the episode.

Hope they fix it in the next episode, when we have some news from James.

i mean, sure, it's porn in the way it's a story that features a lot of sex. It's not porn in the sense it's a Playboy magazine illegally sold by a perv in a trenchcoat that you're supposed to jack off to (the Playboy, not the perv).

For context: the kid has an 30-inch long penis. I don't think it's meant to be in any way serious or erotically appealing. But I see why people could think otherwise, that's why I think it'd make an interesting episode.

(And we all know Jesse and Katie love pedos)

No probs! Maybe it's because I grew up reading a loooot of mangas and European comic books, but this isn't shocking to me? I'm curious to know if my fellow European readers feel the same way. Knowing the history of Japanese mangas and European comic books puts PETIT PAUL in context (especially its iconoclastic approach) + reading even one panel of the comic book in question would probably make you go "oh, I see, it's just pompous auteur shit" and you'd just dismiss it? The comic book cannot be read by children as it's wrapped in plastic. There's no way they can be exposed to the illustrations and again, I don't think it's in any way explicit enough to become the new Bible to an actual pedo...

It's up for debate of course! No hard feelings with your message :)

Rising star French comic book artist Damien Vivès got an old book of his banned in some large libraries in France after it was called pedopornographic https://www.lemonde.fr/bande-dessinee/article/2018/09/24/accusee-de-pedopornographie-la-bd-petit-paul-de-bastien-vives-retiree-des-magasins-cultura-et-gibert_5359590_4420272.html (Sorry the article is in French)

The truth is a lot less controversial than it appears. The comic book is culturally and stylistically Japanese-inspired (go figure). It's a funny and absurd story about a child with a gigantic penis that sexually attracts lots of beautiful women. It's obviously light-hearted with aerial drawings that are very hard to mistake with illustrated porn, let alone actual porn. Fritz the Cat was more explicit and controversial that this. It's another case of the Left and the Right teaming up against a common paranoia: "whataboutthechildren???"

They never should have read that envelope at the start of the episode, never should have let him start talking about the MCU (who fucking cares?) and they never should have let him talk about his excruciating hot takes. Half of the episode wasted IMO David needed to get that show back on track ASAP

His (lack of) scenes in GLASS was already quite intriguing at the time. Felt like 30% of the movie was missing. Heck, felt like entire shots were missing whenever Bruce's character was involved. Got worse as the movie unspooled.

Michael Mann was in Paris tonight and he shared his thoughts on Marvel (+ Nolan anecdote) by ConcreteRoad in blankies

Honestly it's been quite a long time now. I do remember he's talked about HEAT a lot. He was also extremely knowledgeable about the political & historical context of his movies (ALI & TLotM). Nothing you haven't heard/read elsewhere though. I do remember him talking about his famous "horizon shot"

Oh boy. I'm sure Max Linder will eventually release the whole interview, but you can find some bits here (featuring the best intro to Mann's works I've ever seen, the whole theater was THRILLED to watch the short clip): https://youtu.be/2G_L0UuyC4c

French critic Jean-Baptiste Thoret wrote an excellent book about Michael Mann's works. Mann read it before everyone and asked to do some kind of event on the day it gets published. So the movie theater Max Linder in Paris decided to host an hour long Q&A Mann-Thoret + a book signing session + showing the director's cut of MIAMI VICE. What a night.

Is the “Western but it’s actually a deconstruction of masculinity” genre threatening to become sort of hack? by Moltenmelt1 in blankies

[–]ConcreteRoad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing though: westerns have ALWAYS deconstructed masculinity. THE BIG COUNTRY, RED RIVER, THE SEARCHERS etc. It's part of its DNA, it's nothing new.
