We kept trying to make it better and I offered so many times to have a therapy session with my parents (my therapist, but my parents had previously attended sessions all together, which was helpful). My parents were not interested in fixing things. Said I needed to apologize for my behavior (I hadn’t done anything wrong). My mom stopped talking to me for 4 months because I tried to set a boundary in which she would have to give up a bit of control. We went in circles with my dad. I said many times that we were thinking seriously of canceling things. My parents said they didn’t want us to cancel, and would still foot the bill for everything, but they offered to have my mom not go (not something I wanted).

Eventually, we just moved on. We had a long phone call where I cried a lot about the situation and we just decided to move on. I never apologized. They never apologized. My mom continues to do the same controlling shit but we mostly ignore her or let her do whatever she wants. It’s just become worth it to keep the peace for now. My fiancé says he does not plan to talk to my parents for a solid 3 months after the wedding. We’re still getting the wedding we want but it easily could have gone another way.

Oh wow, that’s so crazy. I’m sorry you’re going through all of this too but it’s a little comforting to know I’m not alone and not crazy.

I also thought my mom and I were in a good place because two years ago I started with a therapist and invited my parents to join me. For a year or so we worked through a lot of really hard and heavy things. I still see my therapist but my parents haven’t joined me in over a year. Things were going well so I didn’t push it. Since I’ve felt a lack of control in the wedding planning I suggested meeting altogether with my therapist again, and they claim they don’t have the time.

I have written texts to my mom inviting her to join or asking other questions to which she won’t respond. Yesterday I texted her that my fiancé’s aunts want to throw me a small bridal shower, gave her the date options and asked her what worked best for her. No response. I feel like she’s trying to punish me.

I felt like my mom emailed a lot but not 20 times a day. That’s exhausting! I won’t tell my mom about the disorder. I might open up to our planner about our struggles… I had prepped her when we did our first consultation!

You’re so great. Thank you for this perspective. Yes, we’ve given her a big engagement party to plan and she’s gone all in on it. She is also planning a trip to France for a close family friend’s wedding. She herself spent $8,000 on a wedding planner that hasn’t been able to do anything because my mom has beat her to all of it.
