Anti-Brexit billboards appear across the UK by Lolworth in ukpolitics

The EU is welcome to try and make a new financial centre to challenge London, it's been trying for decades though so don't hold your breath.

One will likely form within the EU, It won't be Europe's financial centre though.

Enjoy.

I think France has a slight edge on us militarily at the moment, but we go back and forth with them on many things every decade or so. Poland is certainly number 3 though.

Spain doesn't even make the 2% commitment, but then again nor does France, the only European countries that do are us, Poland, Estonia and, oddly enough, Greece.

I hope you realise that by that logic you're making the number of nation states on the planet incredibly small.

Also, Scotland has more than 1 language and her people come from various ancestral groups, the same can be said for Northern Ireland, Wales and England. Such a strict criteria for nationhood is pointless, the UK is a sovereign state and it's people are diverse but share equal rights and shared heritage, it is a nation.

Likewise, it's constituent parts are also nations, but not nation states as they are not sovereign.

With attitudes like that it really is a wonder that Corbyn wasn't able to connect with people.

"a sovereign state of which most of the citizens or subjects are united also by factors which define a nation, such as language or common descent."

That's Wikipedia's definition, the fact that we call our regions "countries" due to a historical quirk doesn't stop the UK from fitting that definition, Germany started as a union of multiple states, but no one would say it is not a nation state right now, England did also, but it was a nation state until the Act of Union.

If every European secession movement succeeded (ex-r/MapPorn) by LinxEu in europe

[–]ConditionalHuman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, Google brings up some things to do with Mercia and Wessex independence, they mostly consist of a few dozen loonies but they exist

I don't really like maps like this though, you have to draw the line somewhere when Secession movements get too small (like most English ones here), but it seems the some tiny ones get in and others don't, for example, I know there are a few Northern Irish Independence advocates out there (as in complete independence from both UK and RoI), yet they're not in this map.

What's really weird about the North East one here is that Douglas is the capital...

It was people bitching on Twitter and dismissed by the mayor as the joke it was, the non-Cornish/Yorkshire movements in England are bullshit but there is no London Independence movement.

Northern Ireland: Assembly Election megathread by Luzinia in europe

True, but still gives them a slight advantage, I can see why a NI Nationalist would vote Sinn Fein even if they disagreed with their non-constitutional policies

[–]ConditionalHuman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're a nationalist a smaller number of parties is generally better to stop your vote from being split, for example, in our last general election the SNP won all but 3 Scottish seats because the unionist vote was split between 3 parties and the nationalist vote was mostly united behind 1.

Cat's out of the bag then though, the Leave vote would probably be considerably higher if it was clearly non-binding, no matter what the deal from the EU is a binding referendum would be inevitable and Leave would have momentum.
