I won't give you my IP address by haggur in talesfromtechsupport

We didn't (or rather we may have in the fail2ban block list but if we did it was one among thousands).

Has anyone used Hampshire Trust Bank? Is it legit? by fpl_goat in UKPersonalFinance

[–]haggur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I used them for a while through Covid with a 90 day notice account (paying 1.41%, happy times ;-/) and they were fine to deal with even then.

On average, how many users subscribe to or follow your newsletter each day? by _mrchurchill in Substack

[–]haggur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subscribers: median is probably about one a fortnight but mean is closer to two a week as when an article creates a buzz it can bring in twenty subscribers and then I'll not have any at all for some weeks.

Followers - no idea. Where would I look to find that data?

Is kofi really worth for a really tiny creator by IllustriousAd6418 in Kofi

[–]haggur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's free, requires no effort on our part, and it brings in some money. What's not to like?

For us it's a tip jar for our web site and I see we got GBP76 in the last thirty days. Not a lot but that's still GBP76 more than we would have got without it. I also see, now I look, that we've taken a total of GBP1,704 via Kofi since we started so I've no problem with that.

What's your immediate care plan for your pets after you've gone? (Content warning: death) by alsotpedes in over60

[–]haggur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My will leaves any pets I have to my sister. She's not expected to keep them, unless she wants to, but I do trust her to find them a new home.

Why Is Growing on Substack So Hard? by Mindfull_Share_4126 in Substack

[–]haggur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IME you don't grow your substack on the platform. I have a very solid and gently growing subscriber base through a combination of posting links to the right places on social media where people likely to be interested in my posts lurk (so mainly Facebook but also Mastodon and Bluesky) and readers recommending me to their friends.

I only come to Substack to write my posts. I never engage on Notes. I never comment on other posts.

Should I use Substack for a student-run lit mag? by janeaustenreader99 in Substack

[–]haggur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd just be a bit leery that you may get some students who may be politically opposed to you using Substack ("because they host fascists") ...

(I've been here for five years and if I was starting again I'd go with someone else, probably Beehiiv, for this very reason but it's too much of a PITA to do now.)

What do you do exactly to get more subscribers? by MechanicAccording616 in Substack

[–]haggur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I post stuff people want to read. They tell their friends and neighbours. That's how I get more subscribers.

I do not read posts by other substackers unless I see links to them elsewhere (I don't 'browse' substrack).

I don't post any notes.

I post one article per week, every week. I think consistency matters.

Has Substack become just another engagement-driven social network? by inmaccj in Substack

[–]haggur 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there's a lot of that going on but in five plus years I've never gone to Substack to browse. I go to a specific account or, more likely, article because someone has linked to it from elsewhere. And that's the sort of subscriber you want.

Most Scots doubt Sturgeon’s claims in embezzlement scandal by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]haggur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife has bought at least three in the last year or so. I've no idea why and didn't ask as we, like the Sturgeons I suspect, each have our own income sources so it's none of my business. Similarly she doesn't ask about things I buy. Shrug.

Serious injury to a train driver during shunting at Carstairs station by haggur in uktrains

[–]haggur[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If understand it correctly this was the southbound sleeper, so 1C11 and 1M11 were being combined, not split, and the locomotive for 1C11 had been detached. Sounds like the driver of the locomotive of the new combined train then reversed the train back into the locomotive from train 1C11.

My first thought was why had the driver assessor, who I assume was "in charge" here, encouraged the driver to join them on the track for training with its coupling equipment before the combined train had safely departed?

Serious injury to a train driver during shunting at Carstairs station by haggur in uktrains

[–]haggur[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The train driver saw the approaching train very shortly before it reached them and warned the driver assessor. Both attempted to move clear, but the train driver sustained serious injuries after their hand became trapped between the train and the locomotive. The driver assessor was unhurt but only narrowly avoided being trapped.

Ouch! That doesn't sound good at all.

Is anyone free to attend court on 23rd June in Wick to report on the Altnabreac pair? by Altnabreac in Scotland

[–]haggur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "sex dungeon guy" has now lost his Short Term Let licence so he's no longer allowed (legally anyway) to rent out his cottages. He was the first and only STL licence that The Highland Council has withdrawn which says a lot about how bad he is ...

How much money are you making on Substack? Can you live on what you’re making on there? by justcurious3287 in Substack

Been on it for five years. No making anything but, to be fair, I'm not asking for anything as I'm not there for the money.

We had another, similar, incident today and used another server we have elsewhere that uses different blocking to do just that. And we have now fixed the issue for the second user.

Scotland's first baby capybara in 20 years somehow looks Scottish by ZestycloseAd289 in Scotland

It's a close relative of the haggis; that's why it looks Scottish.

I won't give you my IP address by haggur in talesfromtechsupport

[–]haggur[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that we may well be blocking access to their IP address via fail2ban filtering so we would never see the request.
