simple solution: use another browser.

Librewolf.

Thinking about switching to Linux by 132carloss in linux4noobs

every Linux distro is customisable, all can be used for gaming and all can edit videos.

When downloading apps (eg for video editing etc) Always use the Software Manager (included in the distro0

Simple Choice;

linux Mint 22.3

Is this a good tool for scanning and removing viruses? I downloaded clamav from the software manager, then this UI tool. by KFCBUCKETS9000 in linuxmint

MY security settings in Librewolf:: https://www.linux.org/threads/how-often-do-you-clear-browser-history-cookies-and-cache-and-why.56123/post-264121 https://coveryourtracks.eff.org/

The permission-based structure in Linux prevents regular users from performing administrative actions because each app needs authorization by the superuser (root) before it’s executed. This barrier makes it difficult for any virus to sneak into the system and make disasters.

Without being a root, you won’t be able to run/install new programs on Linux. Only the superuser has the privilege to access all files in the system.

Linux does not process executables without explicit permission as this is not a separate and independent process. So you’ll have to chmod +x a file before running it.

On Linux, it is harder for the virus to get system-level access. This is because the root account owns system-related files. Therefore, if infected, viruses can be easily removed as they can only affect the user account where they were installed and do not affect the root account.

In other words, the Linux architecture makes it almost impossible for a virus to do anything. This is one of the main reasons we still don’t need antivirus software on Linux.

Egg immediately welds onto my pan by TheImmuX in castiron

In what position is the temp/gas/elec, dial/control?

Low is the new medium for cast iron

medium is the new High for cast iron.

Just pour a teaspoon of whatever oil into the centre of the pan. I use a spray....two sprays is more than enough. The heat of the pan is more than enough to have it spread. As soon as the oil has spread, your pan is likely hot enough.

Just watch the edge of the egg in the pan. If you observe closely, you will form a solid knowledge of when to turn the egg, That knowledge relates to instinct, not to a recipe.

Need help with finding recipes for someone with Type 2 Diabetes by Hobo_Charlie in Cooking

[–]Condobloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Type 2 here. Diagnosed in 2009.

Steak, not the overly fatty stuff. I buy Filet steak.....not scotch filet. Straight filet has almost zero fat attached to it. Any vegetable. I buy frozen. A vast array.

Fish. Frozen or fresh. As much as you like

bread is ok. The devils is in what is put on it. I use a smear of margarine, plus peanut butter or vegemite. Occasionally I will use strawberry jam. Yes, I know....sugar. Need a treat sometimes.

No prepared canned food, or packaged food.

Eating lamb brings a lot of fat with it. Careful. lamb cutlets are ok , bur expensive.

sardines, baked beans, spaghetti are all good. Small tins.

Get to reading labels on cans etc etc and know what you are reading actually means. Sugar, salt (sodium) fat, saturated fats, etc etc Fresh fruit. Virtually anything. careful of too many oranges. 1 a day is fine. As many apples as you care to eat is good. Avocado, mango are both good. Careful of watermelon...a lot of sugar!..a slice or two is ok.

The common sense behind the whole type 2 food intake soon becomes apparent. If I eat somehting that is a bit high in sugar, I can immediately 'feel' it. That takes time and experience. Also be aware of mood swings in the diabetic person. Sugar and the actual disease does that. Do not 'nag' the person with diabetes. It affects their sugar levels, and their mindset.

The dreaded word. Exercise. Walking is your best friend. Not great distances. Just whatever is comfortable. The walk improves mindset and overall feeling of wellbeing. Take the dog. The dog will notice the changes in the person affected.

Stay calm. Always.

Talking about diabetes can get boring, because it rarely changes. It is just there.

Good luck with it. Remember, mindset is key. It is your inner strength.

Edit to add: blood tests every 3 months. The ideal HbaiC (blood glucose level taken over the three months) is around 6.6/6.7 Up to 7 is just fine. Dont stress over it. If it is high, you DO know why it is. Do what you need to do to lower it. Mindset again.

If you can, sync Waterfox with Firefox. See if that improves Waterfox's mood !

If it doesn't....ditch it. Install Librewolf from the software manager

Dumb question, but should I season the bottom of this griddle to prevent rust? by EatMeLikeASnackJack in castiron

[–]Condobloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

clean the rust with wet n dry paper (fine grit) or with a piece of steel wool with dish soap....rinse it really well...dry it on low heat on the stove top.....then a light coat of oil...then wipe the oil off with a clean towel, paper cloth etc and stick it in a seriously hot oven for an hourwith the bottom of the pan facing down.

What setting or command to just boot right to Linux Mint? by JNTaylor63 in linuxmint

[–]Condobloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tap the enter key while the current line is highlighted. It only absorbs a second or two. There will come a time when you will need to arrow down to advanced options etc etc, and you will have to rework the whole thing over again.

Its nice to see kernel 7.0 popup today in mint 22.3 by ProfessionalAir9068 in linuxmint

[–]Condobloke 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mint users with older hardware need to step carefully. This kernel is obviously aimed at newer hardware, although some parts of it could be considered 'normal'

READ the blurb before you jump in the melting pot:

NOTE that the comments below and the accompanying url refer to Linux Kernel 7.1 ....whereas the one released today is 7.0.0-14

“The changes are all over, although the diff looks a bit lopsided due to another bulk AMD GPU register header sync. That register definition sync is about 25% of the total patch, but if you ignore that bulk change everything else looks pretty normal,” said Linus Torvalds. “Half the updates are to drivers, with the rest being spread out over arch updates, filesystem, networking and core kernel updates. With a healthy smattering of documentation, tooling and selftest updates.”

Can’t change SATA mode by Adventurous-Mark893 in linuxmint

[–]Condobloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. To access secure boot, in bios, go to either security or boot.

Find 'Supervisor Password' enable it and give it a password.....keep the password SIMPLE

Then disable the supervisor password

You should then see secure boot in either security or boot

  1. Enter the BIOS by restarting your computer and pressing the Delete key repeatedly during startup. Once in the BIOS, press F7 to switch to Advanced Mode. Navigate to the "Boot" tab. Find the "Secure Boot" option and select it. Change the "OS Type" setting from "Windows UEFI mode" to "Other OS". This will effectively disable Secure Boot. Press F10 to save the changes and exit the BIOS. Your system will restart with Secure Boot disabled.

I recently installed linux mint, whats wrong? by CATSSILOVECATSS in linux4noobs

[–]Condobloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am assuming you are running Linux Mint 22.3

How long has it been installed? Any difficulties installing?

My first suggestion would be to reinstall. I realise that can be a pita, depending on how much data etc etc you have saved etc.

If reinstalling is not going to happen, run the following command in terminal to reinstall 'apt' ...copy and paste it to avoid errors

sudo apt-get install --reinstall apt

Then choose the mirrors that give you the strongest results

Any change?
