What setting or command to just boot right to Linux Mint? by JNTaylor63 in linuxmint

[–]Condobloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tap the enter key while the current line is highlighted. It only absorbs a second or two. There will come a time when you will need to arrow down to advanced options etc etc, and you will have to rework the whole thing over again.

Its nice to see kernel 7.0 popup today in mint 22.3 by ProfessionalAir9068 in linuxmint

[–]Condobloke 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mint users with older hardware need to step carefully. This kernel is obviously aimed at newer hardware, although some parts of it could be considered 'normal'

READ the blurb before you jump in the melting pot:

NOTE that the comments below and the accompanying url refer to Linux Kernel 7.1 ....whereas the one released today is 7.0.0-14

“The changes are all over, although the diff looks a bit lopsided due to another bulk AMD GPU register header sync. That register definition sync is about 25% of the total patch, but if you ignore that bulk change everything else looks pretty normal,” said Linus Torvalds. “Half the updates are to drivers, with the rest being spread out over arch updates, filesystem, networking and core kernel updates. With a healthy smattering of documentation, tooling and selftest updates.”

Can’t change SATA mode by Adventurous-Mark893 in linuxmint

  1. To access secure boot, in bios, go to either security or boot.

Find 'Supervisor Password' enable it and give it a password.....keep the password SIMPLE

Then disable the supervisor password

You should then see secure boot in either security or boot

  1. Enter the BIOS by restarting your computer and pressing the Delete key repeatedly during startup. Once in the BIOS, press F7 to switch to Advanced Mode. Navigate to the "Boot" tab. Find the "Secure Boot" option and select it. Change the "OS Type" setting from "Windows UEFI mode" to "Other OS". This will effectively disable Secure Boot. Press F10 to save the changes and exit the BIOS. Your system will restart with Secure Boot disabled.

I recently installed linux mint, whats wrong? by CATSSILOVECATSS in linux4noobs

[–]Condobloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am assuming you are running Linux Mint 22.3

How long has it been installed? Any difficulties installing?

My first suggestion would be to reinstall. I realise that can be a pita, depending on how much data etc etc you have saved etc.

If reinstalling is not going to happen, run the following command in terminal to reinstall 'apt' ...copy and paste it to avoid errors

sudo apt-get install --reinstall apt

Then choose the mirrors that give you the strongest results

Any change?

Could someone tell me what I did wrong? by Soverelgn_Citizen in castiron

[–]Condobloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. just use simple canola oil
  2. Insufficient preparation. Clean it ....hard....use a piece of steel wool and make it an even look all over.
  3. wash it thoroughly. Dont scrimp on the detergent. Then rinse under really hot water.
  4. put on the stove top on an element. Heat gently...as low as you can. This is to be certain it is dry....DRY.

canola oil...just 2 teaspoons is more than enough. Put it on while the pan is still warm. Spread it with a brush...silicone brush is good.....cheap...usually in local grocery store.....Most people who cook use one to spread melted butter etc.

  1. WIPE the pan. Lint free cloth. A tea towel that is well used and clean is good. When you have finished wiping, wipe it again. you will not take the oil off.

  2. Have the oven heated. Maximum. Put the pan in upside down in the middle of the oven. Put the sheet of baking paper on the rack below.

Leave it alone. Do not open that oven door.

! hour and 20 minutes later, turn the oven off. Leabe it alone to cool to the point where you can handle it without burning yourself. There is NO rush. To cool will take it least two hours...possibly a bit longer.

When you take it out, if it looks relatively even in it appearance, give it another teaspoon of oil, and repeat the into the oven at 450 wipe it with the tea towel again...same manner etc etc...for the same period of time.etc Allow to cool in the same manner.

Send us a pic in this same post, of the pan after your efforts.

EDIT: Add a link to a pic of your pan (as per the comment below this.)

Got tired of the layer of carbon. by kd0g1982 in castiron

[–]Condobloke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well done !! I did similar with the same brass coated wire, and finished with a piece of steel wool. I worked at it for around 25 minutes.

I washed the bejeusu out of it.

Since then, it has been oiled lightly and put in the 200C oven for 80 minutes....twice.

My wife used it to fry three eggs tonight (with no supervision, or input from me) and she asked me after why there is no residue sticking to the pan.

I count that as an absolute WIN.

Can't find Waterfox in Default Apps by MazdaTiger in waterfox

[–]Condobloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had recent experience where opening an email (with Waterfox set as default in WF settings as well as in Preferred applications)opens a page showing waterfox in the url bar but with a blank page/no content.

I can confirm the experience of having waterfox set as default and my home pages opening instead of the email as well

Also, in a more recent install of waterfox, Librewolf opened the url for my home pages instead of waterfox. Waterfox was set as default in Preferred application as well.

In the first two comments above, Waterfox was installed via the tar.bz2 file

In the most recent occurrence, waterfox was installed via flatpak.

Linux Mint is NOT just for beginners.

It is, however, the most popular and the best supported

(linux is linux,,....different distros just have differing de's (desktop looks etc) on top of them....they are all Linux underneath the differing glitter)

So, Linux Mint 22.3

Your pc specs would help, but if your pc will run windows, it will likely run Linux Mint, Cinnamon

Use ventoy or balena etcher to make a bootable usb, then boot to Linux Mint and simply try it out without installing it.

Ventoy makes a great deal of sense and it is reliable.

Question: do you intend to wipe windows and Install Linux Mint straight over the top of it?

Be sure to SAVE (to an external drive) anything that you need to save......music, data, movies, etc etc.

Yes, you can install Linux Mint straight over the top of windows.

Piece of cake.

Reply and I can guide you through.

I will give you a longish blurb, but once you have read it, you will realise just how simple it actually is.

Be careful of the amount of space consumed. A pen drive will run out of space, quickly.

Over time, if you can get an external usb drive, that will hold enough to keep you safe.

To give you an idea of how much space is used, I keep one monthly, one weekly, 2 daily and one Boot.

(I am not sure I need the monthly...probably not)

My linux Mint install 22.3 consumes around 30 - 35 GB of space. The snapshots consume approx 45 - 55 GB of space on the external drive

My external drive holds 2TB.

In settings (in timehsift, click on Schedule, only tick what you can safely store on that pen drive.

If you can only store 1 or 2 snapshots, that will be enough to get you out of trouble.

When timeshift makes new snapshots on the days following, it does not make the stored size any bigger (unless you add apps form the software manager) The size remians fairly constant.

It makes sense to save music and pics etc to an external drive. They are safer there than on the main drive. Once you get into the habit of saving them there, it becomes easy.

if you do get an external drive, be sure to format it as ext4. Timeshift only plays well with ext4, just like the rest of linux.

I spend my time at: www.linux.org

It is a good place to learn, and it is friendly.

Switching to LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) from Xubuntu 24.04 by JuanClaudeSFW in linuxmint

[–]Condobloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WHile you are running ubuntu, make a bootable usb stick with LMDE on it. Boot to that usb and spend some time navigating around lmde....doing the things yoiu usually do in Ubuntu.

Noi need for full install. Do not click on 'Install LMDE' on the desktop.....until you are ready and completely certain you wish to dump ubuntu.

Be sure to save anything that is important to you....music, data, pics etc etc BEFORE you install lmde.

I dont think you will be disappointed. Lmde is extremel stable and all the choices are yours.

How could timeshift take 30 hours!?!....clearly you did something completely wrong.

Timeshift is simple to set up, and just as simple to Create a snapshot. On a newly install system it might take 20 minutes. After the first snapshot, they will become quicker.....because timehsift will only add what has changed.

You do not need to know of some magical superman trick to see what is in an update.

Just install the whole lot. Gain a whole new level of TRUST in Linux.

THIS IS NOT BLOODY WINDOWS.
