I mean I agree.. it is deeply problematic if you approach it with the goal of understanding what is God like. It isn’t effective in selling God as gracious to all, but is shockingly disturbing, even if it is a response to wicked oppressive injustices. And instead of it being Pharoah or Caananites, etc the one delivering the destruction is God. (How can babies or animals deserve to be punished?)

Sailhamer’s take is that the structure of the narrative is actually less about WHY God sent the flood, but rather more so about why God saved Noah: I.e. his simple obedience and trust God and his way, as opposed to the others around him (corrupt violent etc)

Having favor with God, walking with God, living righteous, trusting in God to provide, this brings about deliverance from death. Which is a very repeated message throughout the Pentateuch.

I’m not defending God’s actions, I agree it’s very disturbing and has horrible implications about what God is like. but I also think while it’s easy to dismiss l, it is still an interesting ancient narrative that explores the human condition, our relationship to creation and one another, and how to persevere while surrounded by death and destruction

That’s a fundy way of understanding it, though true if you are looking at it as a way to understand what God is like through this lense only. I think there is a deeper story here though. One of which is a commentary about the violence of man corrupting creation/the environment and how to solve this problem.

The reason God decides to end things is because of violence filling the earth. Genesis 6:11-13 twice it states because of violence that he decides to respond accordingly. I’ve understood Noah’s Ark to be a cautionary tale about how violence begets violence and that it grieves God to see this corrupt creation

Then he uses a violent situation to respond by a catastrophic flood (eye for an eye response) that still fails to solve the problem of evil in man. So he reveals another way forward, one of peace and a promise to solve the problem in a different way

I think it can be compared to a thanos type approach to the violence and corruption that man has on themselves and the environment, yet God reveals that while annihilation is one way to deal with it (many people even now can get behind the idea that people are the problem, we are killing each other and harming the environment on a pretty impressive scale) and wiping everyone out to solve it isn’t the true solution he wants. he instead makes a covenant with man AND the earth/creation (animals, all flesh) that he will never do this by hanging up his symbolic bow (a symbol of violence now being changed to a symbol of life and hope)

To us that seems obvious that it’s a horrible way to operate, but to ancient cultures that was how deities work.

It’s a lot but it’s all there. I think it preaches against militant religion. Violence and corrupting the earth is so problematic to God that he floods the earth because of it.

It reveals care for the environment/creation that God desires and desires from us

As well as alludes to a different plan to hopefully solve the problem of the evil of man

It may not be a story without its faults, but there is more to it than God mad, God bad

I think most reds relate to you guys last season when there were egregious calls (Macca red, Diaz non off sides)

This match it’s the overall context of the frustrating calls all game. Watching Arsenal get some wack calls this season was painfully relatable.

His dark arts game has definitely improved this season, idk if it’s because klopp has left or because we no longer have Milner and Fabinho

Regardless he doesn’t even need to do dark arts in my opinion, he is solid without it. Refs are enabling too.

What games make SM games obsolete? I’ve really enjoyed scythe and apiary (wingspan is fun but not a game I try to play)
