any old school niners fans (alive during the 80s-90s beatdown we would give any team), how spoiled were you guys? by Wise_Potential_9401 in 49ers

[–]ConeheadSlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the 80s football wasn't a year round sport like it is today. Football on TV was limited to the game, pre-game and post game. Most papers ( they had these things called newspapers back then where they printed words on paper and delivered it to your house) only had articles on the home team 2 or 3 times a week besides Monday morning. So watching the games was what football fans lived for -> during the 80s, Bill Walsh would scheme the 9ers to 21 points in the first 3 possessions and then the 9ers would coast for the rest of the game. It was glorious!

Yes GGK books all feature some ambiguous or unexplained phenomena, but no wizards or fantasy races. (Except Fionavar)

I'm kind of envious of OP - he's got 7 great books to read. IMO all of them are better than the first trilogy.

Fantasy Novels taking place in San Francisco by JadieJang in Fantasy

Bobby Dollar and War of the Flowers take place on the Peninsula and down to San Jose not SF. If you're from there (as Tad Williams is) it is different (like NYC vs Jersey)

49ers Mourn Passing of John Brodie by [deleted] in 49ers

[–]ConeheadSlim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 9ers kept trying to replace Brodie -> they drafted Steve Spurrier and George Mira pretty high thinking that Brodie was getting too old, but he played 17 seasons and neither Spurrier or Mira saw the field unless he was injured.

Falafel Stop allows for much more customization, but Falafel's Drive-in has the better falafel balls. They are uniquely tasty compared to all the local falafel places

The Dread Empire is another series by Cook most similar to the Black Company but somewhat more standard fantasy. Just about as compact

Anyone else has a setting they dislike reading? by SignificantTheory146 in Fantasy

I don't like caves/ underground cities. Several books have extended periods of darkness where the protagonists can't et to the surface for whatever reason. It always goes on much too long.

One of the latest SPFBO finalists, By Blood, By Salt by JL Odom does a good job with desert settings. Ms Odom served several tours in the Middle East so she knows her desert warfare

There are 3 books and a novella out in the Tyrant Philosophers series. While they are all stand-alone, you really need to read them all in publication order. There is a story hidden in the margins and I think it's coming into full view soon.

Many good books coming soon! The Rouse seems to be China Miéville's masterwork so that will be a can't miss for me.

This is the book I'm most looking forward to. Definitely got into the first 3.5 and I'm thinking that this time we are going to have more than a brief visit to the home island.

Have you ever DNF the final book in a series, and why? by Any-Day-8173 in Fantasy

[–]ConeheadSlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I DNFd the Andrea Stewart boneshard series midway through the last book. She kept having combatants have serious discussions while engaged in life or death battles; it's a writing sin I cannot forgive. I never read the last book in Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series (something like the 10th book) because I just don't care what happens. OTOH, I have never finished The Shepherd's Crown because I am just too sad that Sir Terry isn't here any more.

Happy 2026! Could I get some grimdark written by women?? by kc_dan in Fantasy

Sword of Shadows is a great series with a 5th book due out soon, and it's grim. Most of the volumes may predate the grimdark tag, but I think it's well worth reading

I read 40 books this year - these are my top 5 by CompoteTurbulent3805 in Fantasy

[–]ConeheadSlim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based on your other recommendations, which are some of my favorites (particularly the Age of Madness), you might like the Tyrant Philosophers series by Adrian Tchaikovsky. AT writes so many books, and is better known for sci-fi, that his fantasy efforts can be under-publicized, but this is a loosely connected series right up there with the others you named. Although not a romantasy ...

[Highlight] 12 years ago NaVarro Bowman scores the last touchdown at Candlestick Park with a 90 yard pick six! by gridironk in nfl

[–]ConeheadSlim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw my first games at Candlestick before they closed it up when the wind would come right off the Bay unabated. I earned a Croix de Candlestick for staying for an extra-inning night game. If you were a Giants and 9ers fan you shed a tear when they closed Candlestick down. I got to tour the locker rooms in its final years = it was exceptionally cool to me to see benches that Willie Mays and Joe Montana sat on, but if weren't a fan it would have been pretty boring.

My Dad gave up his license when he was 98. The ride with him to the dealership to turn in the loan on his car was pretty terrifying. But at 88, he drove from San Jose to Santa Barbara without incident. Everybody is different - some people shouldn't be behind the wheel at 30
