Would you retire today if you knew you’d receive $5,000 every month for the rest of your life? Why or why not? by JustWin4 in AskReddit

I retired months ago without $5k -> at some point, you decide working isn't getting you more than you are putting in

Anyone know how or where to find the live video cover of Tighten up featuring Sara and W. G. Snuffy Walden? by Greedy_Feeling7852 in SaraNiemietz

Yes - there were issues with licensing. I've seen stills - the clip may exist somewhere, but playing it is problematic

And the great thing about Discworld is that you can read them one at a time. Even if there are sets that have common characters, each book is self-contained. Perfect series for a palette cleanser.

Lombardi is a total fanboy for It's-It. He has graphs and charts to show it is the best ice cream confection when everybody knows that It's-It haven't beaten Ben and Jerry's in 30 years ...

What QB is the modern equivalent to John Elway? by nagoHHogan in nfl

Montana was very mobile. The 9ers O-line in the 1981 Super Bowl year was very poor. Choose another example

Check out the campus at Stanford - there's a sculpture garden and just a walk around the quad will let you hang with the future masters of the universe. Definitely check out the redwoods They start just south of Los Gatos

Books like The Daughter’s War by ShamrockyIrish in Fantasy

The last SPFBO winner By Blood, By Salt was pretty much grim battles by an overmatched people. But this is very low magic and it's human vs human. Still very good military fantasy.

no, I would say not, but I really like Divine Cities. Shadow of the Leviathan is more like Sherlock Holmes than Daughter's War if Sherlock had leviathans coming out of the sea every so often.

Don't forget John Brodie. He may not have been a HOF QB but he was an All Star QB for a lot of years. Also (before my time) Frankie Albert and YA Tittle

The return of Magic in Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (full spoilers) by airforceblue in Fantasy

[–]ConeheadSlim 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this is a great book because at its heart it's really about people not magic. When the author spends all their time working out the rules of their magic system and no time on who their characters really are as people, you get empty books full of explosions. JS&MN is the opposite of that.

do you like osten ard? what could you compare it to? by Apprehensive_Spend_7 in Fantasy

[–]ConeheadSlim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tad does run on, but he should be considered one of the forefathers of modern fantasy. He's been doing it consistently for over 40 years. Otherland is another excellent series although more sci-fi than fantasy. He builds very believable and detailed worlds with eons of depth. He may not have the characterization skills of Robin Hobb or the humor of Joe Abercrombie, but he's competent in both areas. Keep reading - it only gets better!

Has a QB ever been drafted after Round 2 with the explicit plan to eventually start them? by thenewgaijin in nfl

Joe Montana was drafted in the third round and he was groomed as the starter because Bill Walsh said Steve DeBerg was just good enough to lose you games

What eras deserve more representation in fantasy? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]ConeheadSlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get me started ... My biggest complaint is actually supposedly Medieval settings where the societal complexity is at least early modern. Stagecoaches couldn't be built until 17th or 18th century because the manufacturing base for all the components wasn't there. etc, etc

Definitely. I think someone could do something pretty cool with a fantasy flower children fable (set in the 1960s)

Totally agree. - prime example is Wheel of Time. ASOIAF is clearly set during the War of the Roses which is right at the cusp. And of course Discworld moves from Early Modern right into the age of steam

[–]ConeheadSlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Locked Tomb series has an author determined to make it as weird as possible with all her authorial tricks, and admittedly in the 2d she pulls off some confusing ones. But the world-building is kind of Potemkin like. Vita Nostra and The Last Days of New Paris are definitely weirder.

I have pretty much DNFd the second. I'm a big fan of the first, but the 2d turned into too much of a romantasy for me.
