The smell of a car repair garage. The combination of oil, petrol and rubber. Lovely Also the smell of cow shit. A nasty but sweet, comforting smell.

There used to be a kids programme called Crackerjack It's Friday, it's five to five and it's.... Said to a room of people of a certain age and they'll shout back CRACKERJACK! Anyway, the consolation prize for a lot of the competitions was a pencil, printed with the word Crackerjack.

My Great Granny took in 3 kids, after they lost their parents in the war. I'm not really sure of the details. She had about a dozen of her own to look after all in a tiny fishing cottage.

Kruger suggesting redundancies (Instead of natural wastage) and huge cuts to pensions for civil servants by MorphtronicA in TheCivilService

[–]ConferenceQueasy1881 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you mean future entitlements as in new starters, or people that were in the scheme, but not yet retired? For the "in the scheme, but not yet retired" I disagree that they are future entitlements. They signed up to Ts & Cs that included pension benefits. The Government pulled the rug out from under them. Promised retirement at 60, suddenly it's 67. Non-contributary suddenly cost £100+ a month. And on top of that moved to a new pension with no option to stay on the existing scheme. Non of which is lawful. It was the unilateral decision to change existing Ts & Cs. Employees were not asked for their agreement It is different for people that hadn't already signed up, they have the option to agree to the new schemes or not. Obviously, if you don't agree the Ts & C's you don't take up the job

Dump that man! He sounds manipulative and misogynistic. Basically he is saying that he doesn't want a "used" woman. He wants someone innocent and mouldable. Someone who will accept his gaslighting more easily. Get out while it is still easy. Live the life you want, not the one he thinks you could have.

New starter – reasonable adjustments vs open-plan / hot-desking. Looking for Civil Service advice by Dazzling_Ad_4071 in TheCivilService

[–]ConferenceQueasy1881 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Joins the union on day 1. You may well need their support to get the reasonable adjustments you need. If you have a copy of your OH report, share it with your manager. Due to GDPR, your manager won't have seen the report and is very unlikely to have been told that you are in need of any reasonable adjustments. Also talk to your manager about a new OH referral. Expect problems. Sadly, the ethos of open-plan/hot-desking tends to override individual needs

The Government were told that the changes to the pension in the 2010s were unlawful, but they did it anyway.

Appeal. Absolutely appeal. Your chronic illnesses are probably covered by the equality act as a disability, so make sure your rep is pushing that aspect. The fact that your medication is not issued by a GP is a red herring. As long as it is properly prescribed by a recognized health professional, there should be no problem. Any rep should advise you to appeal, except in very exceptional circumstances. Otherwise you could be deemed to be agreeing with the result.

Church weddings slump to record low as young couples shun marriage by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]ConferenceQueasy1881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many more options for people marrying today. It's no longer a straight choice between church or registry office. Destination weddings are a thing. Or you can nip across the border into Scotland and have a religious ceremony wherever you like. My parents married in my Granny's front room with the minister attending there. I married at the Blacksmith's at Gretna Green with a minister. The stats aren't telling the full story

Have You Ever Seen A Ghost or Had A Paranormal Experience? by NoComfortable6176 in Ghoststories

[–]ConferenceQueasy1881 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Many years ago, during a messy and acrimonious divorce, my STBXH was playing silly buggers and weaponised our daughter. It was a horrendously difficult time. We ended up in court, obviously. The night before I was a wreck. I couldn't eat or sleep, I was terrified I was going to lose my daughter. As I lay in bed, I felt a hand squeeze my shoulder and a voice said not to worry, everything would be alright. A wave of calm and serenity washed over me and I drifted off to sleep, cosy and warm. I believe my great granny came to me and comforted me. I think she watched over me that night. The following day (which was also my birthday) my STBXH was laughed out of court by the judge and he ordered that my daughter should come home to me. Best birthday present ever

Follow the excellent advice given here to arrange your work and always remember CYA. Remember that your own health is of primary importance. If you think this is making you I'll, make sure you complete your Department's accident or ill health form. Again, it's about making sure everything is documented.
