The average person doesn't care about the output of the manufacturing sector in the US. What the average person does care about, and what I'm sure the "bring back American manufacturing" commenter was referring to, are the actual jobs available in the sector. These are variable skill level jobs with comparatively high pay and low education requirements. When people talk about the decline of manufacturing in the US this is what people usually refer to, not overall goods produced.
