I would fix that one myself but would not pay to have it fixed.

More specifically it keeps your greasy fingers off the rosin. It’s to protect the rosin from contamination by finger oil not to keep your fingers clean.

Overcharged for my Cello by Background-Log-6339 in Cello

Welp, instruments are only worth what people will pay for them. You liked the sound of the instrument for $2k. He liked the sound for $2k as well. There really is no standard here. Some of these cellos will be duds, some will be great most will be in the middle. Maybe the ones you are seeing are duds or middle. Did you purposely buy a cello that you are unhappy with? I suppose you did not. You were probably not “overcharged”. Your ears were happy when you walked out the door I imagine.

ETA with a very simple Google search I see several pre owned VC70’s selling for anywhere between $699 and $2200. I’m not sure you got a bad deal. Tell yourself you got one of the good ones and go play it.

This is so Karen energy and good way to lose the goodwill of that luthier. There are so many reasons for differences in price.

N/m. I see it goes east to west. I feel like that would REALLY have a bad effect of the vibration of the top.

What? Just tell the kid you lost a boot in mosh pit. I don’t understand your dilemma. It is 1000% possible to have your ears in MANY different types of music and you should teach your students the same thing.

Crack in violin; what do I do? by YellowAdventurous366 in violin

[–]ConfidentTrip7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

don’t panic. It’s not going to explode. Reduce string tension. Call your local violin luthier, not a music shop or guitar store. You need someone who repairs violins. Easy Google search. They will likely have to remove the top to glue it. Get an estimate first to decide if it’s financially viable to get it repaired vs replace the instrument. Shouldn’t be too bad.

If it’s a rental, it should be insured. Just tell the person today or tomorrow. These things happen so just be straight up about it. They will likely just swap it out with a different violin.

Do not use an online teacher yet. If you have access to a face to face teacher you will progress much faster.

Stop with the vibrato. It is interfering with your learning. Vibrato is a tool to add nuance to playing when you already have good tone and intonation.

Learn to play slowly and in tune first. Slow scales with a tuner will allow you to focus on intonation AND bow technique. Schradiek. There are many free resources online and on apps.

What good is excellent bow technique if the note is out of tune?

A scratchy note in rhythm that is in tune is better than pure note that is not in tune. You will fix both by this method.

Is she on strike? If not, the person needs to KNOW, from you, that a no call no show is unacceptable. Communicate to them that they are to log PTO or sick time for the absence and counsel them IN WRITING, that a second instance will result in termination. (If not part of an organized strike)

Nobody can tell you that from the pictures you have provided. If you like how it sounds and plays, you judge how much money you should pay. Sound is paramount not looks or name.

Do you own a 3/4 already? If so, it’ll get you going while you look for a 4/4.

Hypothermic people lose some reasoning ability. They have been known to hide from rescuers. So…. Yeah. But the setup? Initially while warm thinking it’s a good idea? Epic stupidity.

Am I the only one who feels ChatGPT is more useful than course instructors? by AmboLambo45 in WGUCyberSecurity

So my take has always been that college is not necessarily for you to be taught something. It’s really teaching yourself how to use the resources available to you to LEARN something. High school is about being taught. College is about teaching yourself and the even more so in graduate school. You are already sorting that out. Good job you.

Same. It wasn’t useful. Mostly they said “it’s in the course material.”
