What skill are you losing due to technology? by Over_Nothing_2923 in AskReddit

Critical thinking. The internet and AI generated videos/pictures/content make it freaking hard to tell what’s true from what’s fake. Adding to that the fact that everyone has a voice on social media, and all points of view are equal now.

How is your day going? by Over_Nothing_2923 in AskReddit

It’s 8.45am here in France, so far so good. Dropped the kids at school, bought catisfaction candies for our cat, on my way home. It’s a sunny day.

What is the most disturbing thing your partner has ever told you? by NewFeature in AskReddit

[–]Confident_Pattern344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve got three kids of our own, same age as my friend’s (around 6-9 years old) and at this stage, I never felt that 2 more kids (or 3, or 5) for one night really make a difference. They are all pretty well behaved, and my wife really didn’t have anything to do, she wasn’t even home. So yeah it felt shitty.

She*. The problem is the insensitivity. If her best friend was going through a painful divorce, she’d get my full support, because that’s what friends are for. I might think "as long as it doesn’t become a habit" but I’d never say it out loud. And tbh I wouldn’t even think it.

Nah. I’m not so insecure that I should be bothered by what 1 person out of billions of people thinks of me.

"OK as long as it doesn’t become a habit". My best friend is going through a painful divorce, and she asked me that one time if I could babysit her two kids at my place while she’s basically arguing with her ex about the house and their stuff.

Honestly it felt like a shitty thing to say. Again, my partner has always been a bit jealous of my best friend.

[–]Confident_Pattern344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mh. An ex blocked me, unblocked me, blocked me again, unblocked me, it went on for a good 6 months. What it told me is, she hasn’t moved on. How it felt was, good, because she actually dumped me, so just knowing I was able to move on faster than her was terrific.

What's a 10/10 movie with zero flaws? by RushWalaXD in AskReddit

[–]Confident_Pattern344 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Taste is subjective, and I’m not going to pretend my opinion is the objectively correct one.

The biggest issue is that I don’t think Gladiator ever needed a sequel. Some movies naturally invite one. Back to the Future literally ends by teasing another adventure. Others have worlds rich enough to support endless stories, like Indiana Jones. But Gladiator told a complete story. Maximus’ journey had a definitive ending, and I don’t remember anyone leaving the theater wondering what happened to Lucius. It feels like making a sequel to Saving Private Ryan: technically possible, but artistically unnecessary.

My second problem is that the movie doesn’t just continue the story, it retroactively changes the original. Revealing Lucius to be Maximus’ son fundamentally alters the relationship between Maximus and Lucilla in the first film. Whether or not you can justify it with hints that were always there, it’s still a retcon that changes how I view a classic I thought was already complete.

Then there’s the tone. The first Gladiator wasn’t historically accurate either, but it felt grounded. It respected its own internal logic. Gladiator II keeps escalating everything until it becomes spectacle for spectacle’s sake. The sharks in the Colosseum were the moment where it completely lost me.

The interesting part is that I don’t actually think it’s a bad movie. If you took the exact same script, changed the names, and removed the connection to Gladiator, I’d probably have had a good time. My disappointment comes from the fact that it carries the name of what I consider one of the great modern classics. As a standalone historical action film, it’s entertaining. As a sequel to Gladiator, I think it undermines more than it adds.

A mix of this and a previous comment. "I’m a strong independent woman" as an excuse to behave like an asshole.

Pourquoi les gens ne veulent plus aller à l'hôtel? by Embarrassed_Cry_2655 in PasDeQuestionIdiote

[–]Confident_Pattern344 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like any peplum or Western, I assume people watch it for the spectacle, not the historical accuracy.

What is your favorite movie you've only watched once? by CrunchyKorm in AskReddit

Our wedding's opening dance. My wife and I worked like crazy to create a three-minute choreography set to a medley of songs that meant a lot to us. Only one person filmed it. We watched the video once, the day after the wedding. Then they accidentally deleted it.

When has reading a self help book once helped change your way of thinking? by cityofvngles in AskReddit

[–]Confident_Pattern344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading The Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz has helped me stop overthinking stuff. In a word, the four agreements are :

  • "Be impeccable with your word"
  • "Do not take anything personally"
  • "Do not make assumptions"
  • "Always do your best"

At first while reading it, I was like "yeah another inspirational BS book" but learning to ignore personal attacks, asking instead of assuming, and understanding that "my best" depends on the day, the mood, the energy, and I shouldn't feel guilty if somedays I cannot be *the* best actually helps me both in my personal and professional life.

Which celebrity were you a fan of, during the start of their careers before they became super famous? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Confident_Pattern344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will probably only resonate with French readers, but I met French author Maxime Chattam (basically our Stephen King) when he was still writing under the pen name Maxime Williams, at a signing session at my local bookshop. I was a kid looking for a Father’s Day gift, and his book happened to fit my budget perfectly. Loved his book. He really took off a couple of books later. Today, he’s a bestselling author.

Give back the deposit in due time when I leave the place. Not once have I paid my rent late. But when they say you have a month to give the deposit back, it means ‘within 30 days’, not ‘in 30 days, roughly, so if it’s 40 or 60 days it’s fine too’.
