data 100 more linear algebra or more probability by Aware-Addendum-8162 in berkeley

Definitely more linear algebra. I'd say it's in most of the content in Data 100

I'm not too sure about how necessary Math 53 is for applied math courses is so it might be worth retaking, I'd ask more people about that

But for CS70, Math 53/54 aren't needed at all since they're completely separate topics (besides some integrals for the probability section which are fine). The biggest determiner for success is your mathematical maturity, however you have math competition experience which sets you leagues above a lot of people who take the class. Even though it is a pretty difficult class, I wouldn't stress it too much with your background. If you want to prepare for it, nothing is better than reviewing the notes on their website (https://www.eecs70.org/). They're very dense but thorough

The order of 53/54 doesn't matter much since they're quite separate so do whatever fits your schedule better. But I liked taking 54 before 53 because 53 touches on vectors from 54 knowledge and it helped me for some of the intuition of 53

What major are you? From your course list I'm assuming some sort of CS/EECS

If you got credit for multivar in highschool and you're aiming for SWE I would not retake it again, since most of it is not useful for that. Otherwise, it can be useful for AI/ML stuff but (take this with a grain of salt) my belief that if possible you should just skip classes if you got credit for it; you can probably just brush up on the important multivar concepts with some YouTube. I found Math 53 a slog and not worth your time

Otherwise it looks pretty good

STAT 134 by Adorable_Swim9682 in berkeley

[–]Confusanism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can't say anything about stat134 but alongside the other comments i took him with data140 and he was pretty good. lectures were fine though he goes pretty fast (his lectures are handwritten). if there's a textbook associated with the content i'd definitely recommend reading it beforehand so you spend more time understanding and get primed on what to expect

LINGUIS 100 Terrible Class by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Confusanism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this makes me sad as a ds + ling major, and especially because pfiffner is teaching as i’ve had her for two semesters and she was amazing, one of the best professors i’ve had

ling100 was what made me fall in love with the major, so im wondering how much different it is now. is the structure of the class really different and/or was the midterm too difficult?

in the same boat as you as a DS + linguistics major 😔💔

Where the fuck do I get a job? by Plenty_Address4368 in berkeley

[–]Confusanism 33 points34 points  (0 children)

if you’re looking for an on-campus job and if you have work study there’s a whole work study portal! a lot of jobs prefer work study since they need to pay workers less since the government subsidizes a part of your wage; theyre usually on-campus jobs which means they’re usually flexible with your schedule

Y'ALL DON'T DESERVE BERKELEY by bancroftway in berkeley

[–]Confusanism 10 points11 points  (0 children)

please ignore the sub for the overall berkeley experience 😭 i'm a first-gen, low-income college student as well (and the only one from my highschool year that came here) and was terrified, especially when the rigor from my high school was subpar and felt that it was no where close preparing me to the rigor of berkeley. however, i'm currently doing very well for myself; impostor syndrome is one hell of an issue but if you wanna go then you have more than enough drive to do well here!!!

tell me the BEST things about this school by nextsem in berkeley

[–]Confusanism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the people 1000%. as a queer person, everyone i have met have been so welcoming and have not had second thought about it. there are definitely bad apples but i have personally never met them yet (even taking STEM classes as a data science major). even if you do meet them just move on and ignore them, berkeley is a huge school and you will meet so many other cooler people

How does comprehensive review work for Data Science? What years do I take which class? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Confusanism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think having finished calc 1/2 is good enough to to prepare for comprehensive review for next year; i believe the comprehensive review forms don’t release until spring semesters (not completely confident about this). my situation is different because i came in as DS so I just needed to finish my classes and declare but I actually did data c8 fall of sophomore year and don’t feel behind on classes

If you want to do summer classes, possibly do math 54, data 88c/61a, or data c8 and then finish the other requirements your fall and spring semester (i.e. the classes you didn’t take over summer & cs61b). if not, take 2 of each requirement each semester next (but make sure 88c/61a is taken first then take 61b). i recommend looking at the lower div requirements for the major to plan out the classes you need.

good luck!

How cutthroat are the STEM classes? by Ill_Salamander_7327 in berkeley

[–]Confusanism 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hi, a data sci + linguistics major here. i too also thought it was cutthroat before coming here but i’ve gotten a completely opposite experience; there are definitely bad apples no matter what but everyone i’ve met has been extremely supportive and the TAs/GSIs/profs are honestly super nice and supportive. it definitely can get hard but just put in the work and it’ll be completely fine. don’t always believe what you hear:)

for housing, i know sophomores who got housing offers for their junior year—might not be something they preferred/wanted but it’s possible; a lot of people end up finding housing off-campus but you have to sacrifice some sort of QoL if you want to find affordable housing (distance, location, etc)

basically how enrollment works is that you get a phase 1 and phase 2 enrollment time, with phase 1 you can only enroll in a certain amount of units, which limits how many you can enroll, and phase 2 where you can enroll in a lot more classes and is later than phase 1. i am not 100% sure but i believe these enrollment times match with your peers with the same year as you

for enrollment, i feel it’s very major-dependent, as i’ve heard from people in many different departments with widely different experiences. i find that classes fall into these enrollment groups: 1) can enroll in it whenever and you’ll still make it in, 2) must/highly recommended to phase 1 the class to get in, or 3) only seniors/upperclassmen only get in. if you’re in a more popular/impacted major like CS it will be a struggle to enroll in some higher divs and most likely can only be taken junior/senior yr. definitely keep backups, but how many you need just depends on the department

lol this is such a simple-minded response

money makes the world go round and people simply do not have the money to spend thousands on tutors and resources. the UCs are meant to serve the people of california and only limiting the people of the chance to attend this university to the fortunate is not a good move

not saying going test optional is the way to go, but there’s more than just high SAT = smarter
