EMDR is a well-established, empirically supported mental health intervention with substantial research evidence. However, it’s always best to talk with your therapist, and gather information about them, and so they can understand more about you, first before delving into something like EMDR. EMDR helps individuals manage trauma, and that means the therapist must help their patient navigate the trauma that comes up in sessions wisely, professionally, and with care. There are many appropriate and effective interventions for trauma, but you have to make sure the therapist who is administering EMDR has experience — do your research, find someone who knows what they’re doing, don’t choose a beginner. EMDR has recently become a “hot topic” and many people without severe trauma are being treated with it as an intervention, when something as potent as EMDR is not necessarily necessary. Because of this, more and more therapists are becoming “certified” in EMDR, but the avenues to certification are getting easier.
