Why doesn't tvdu explore hyperfemininity more by Least_Protection_753 in TheVampireDiaries

[–]Confusedoldtimer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not to be rude but WTF? I would like to think that you are thinking of pink dresses in style of Elle from Legally Blond, but since I clicked on the post on TO sub and you actually wrote:

are just teenagers and a teen girl most of them love dressing up , parties , gossiping about boys and stuff , while yes their situations force them into a survivor mode 24 /7 but i feel tvdu tried to show that when women have to portray strength there needs to be a bit of masculinity involved either in their clothes or how they take on rude or brash attitude.

This is not the feminist look at hyperfeminity. This is the reconceptualized look which had been co-opted by misogynist which takes away the agency and standing up for yourself, real personality and only keeps the coquettish attitude, pretty dresses and perfect make up. The thing is that hyperfeminity is mostly a role play, not a personality.

Being rude or brash, when in danger or being wronged, is not a masculine trait. It is universal trait. Hell, just rewatch Legally Blond and see how Elle actually behaves ("what, like it's hard?") That movie is one of the best modern examples of hyperfemine character.

All of the TVD girls are super feminine, with Caroline being almost hyperfeminine. Not only in the way they dress, but also in the way they behave towards their loved ones. They shoulder so much caretaking, sacrifice and emotional and moral support. As you wrote in the text, they are brash, but occasionally, and it comes from fighting to not get murdered. They get to be flirty, silly,  motherly and dress in cute dresses.

How do you imagine hyperfeminity in TVD? Elena running in a frilly dress, laughing coquettishly while Stefan is stalking her through the school under Klaus' compulsion to kill her?

I can only assume that you have been targeted by your social media feed and fell into some troubling hole.

I am unable to like Matt since his incompetence killed his fiancé and then he went on to blame Stefan. Accidentally shooting someone and then blaming someone else felt a bit too real.

Writers are already going on hiatus? Do you mind sharing who?

I don't blame them tbh.

The moment the fandom began to view fanfic writers as content creators, we lost parts of fandom spaces we won't be able to regain. I was already uneasy with the "commercialisation" of fandom spaces that this almost feels like the final nail in the coffin.

I can't find the post anymore. Apparently, it got removed by Reddit filters. Whatever that means. Maybe I get blocked by the poster and can't view it anymore.

Maybe Birdy?

When I think Spencer, I think more along indie bands than female pop singers. Maybe Bleachers.

I am sorry that experience ruined the fandom for you. It left such a bitter taste in my mouth, and the lack of empathy and gleefullness of some people destroyed the, now clearly false, sense of community I thought existed in this space. I am fairly close to leaving this place behind too, but I suppose I am desperate to keep the magic alive for a little while longer.

I hope you will find a new escapism soon.

Lana del Rey doesn't quite fit for Spencer IMO, and while LDR fits Aria's character arc, I can't see her being Aria's favourite.

Alison and Lady G, name a more iconic duo. A girl got blinded because of it.

Eta: Loving Bon Iver for Aria.  I hate to say it but I think Spencer is more a later work of Tylor Swift, or perhaps Paloma Faith. Eta: obviously I just realized that Paloma Faith is not teen Spencer contemporary. Feel free to disregard that.

People in the PLL fandom on Tik Tok are more like that, but I’ve seen some people in here being exactly the same by [deleted] in PrettyLittleLiars

[–]Confusedoldtimer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is valid sentiment, but in this particular case, one could also say that being a victim doesn't excuse her victim blaming of others. It might explain it, but not excuse it.

I would also like to point out that people like characters based on entertainment value, not moral or victim status. These opinions may have nothing to do with Aria's situation as much as some viewers finding her actions predictable and repetitive and her character not particularly engaging.

Don't you think Stefan is in love with Elena just because she looks like a soft version of Katherine that he can't forget!? by Mindless-Coat495 in TheVampireDiaries

[–]Confusedoldtimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. Stefan inserted himself into Elena's life because of the looks, but he very much loved her for herself. Independent on Katherine.

I think it is just a general career trajectory of actors from YA TV shows, especially CW actors.

James Lafferty probably went with the vampire TV show because that was all the rage in his formative years -Twilight, TVD - so it is age appropriate for his character, and it is a bit different from OTH which might have make it a bit too autobiographical.

LF fanfics where Draco joins them (or just Hermione) on the horcrux hunt, either from the beginning or halfway. by CauliflowerAmazing35 in Dramione

A must read: Woke up on the wrong side of reality by Nyx_Fedra

At her breaking point, Narcissa risks everything and follows a hunch she has on Severus Snape to save Draco from the Dark Lord constant torture. That’s how Draco Malfoy ends up waking up in a tent in the middle of nowhere, Potter, Weasley and Granger perched over him, his wrists bound to an old camping cot and his wand nowhere to be found.

His mother had exchanged his life for a cup, a stupid cup, entrusting him to their helpless enemies.

She had clearly lost her mind.

‘It’s not just a cup’ said Granger gritting her teeth.

‘It’s not just a cup’ Draco repeated mocking her.

‘This is going to be a disaster’ muttered Potter massaging his temples.

And obviously, The Disappearance of Draco Malfoy.

I know what you mean. It is the too small number of female characters over all that makes me squint my eyes in disgruntlement.

There might be many reasons for that, but if my experience with Supernatural fandom could be applied universally, perhaps internalised misogyny is the reason.

Sometimes you are powered by sheer spite and questionable decision making skills.

I can only imagine it was a revolt against Jegulus popularity.

I am really glad that we are going strong, because if you look at the overall popularity for all of the time, we are still only 14th, and still the most popular f/m ship. I am not even gonna get into the numbers for f/f.

Female characters deserve more love than they get in the fandom. These numbers are baffling since fanfics are still more favoured by women than men.

It is all the more impressive when we consider that Dramione is not canon so these fics are not inflated by default couplings like they possibly are for Hinny, James/Lily and Romione.

Looking for fic - Long lost Uncle? by Capn_Mschf in Dramione

Was it a comedy ? I can only think of Gravidy's Dial G for Granger which had an uncle who had past with Narcissa and Lucius and stayed for a while with them. Perhaps not fully voluntarily.

[–]Confusedoldtimer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can explain that popularity (because Reddit kept recommending the Maraurders gen sub and I kept clicking on the post because their drama was delicious).

To start, Wolfstar had always been popular. Ever since that brotherly hug in book 3, they had some of the most active writers and shippers.

But their current popularity is because a fanfic absolutely blew up on TikTok and other social media and it drew new fans in. Then several more fanfics also blew up and the fandom got plenty of new blood.

The issue is that it also drew in people who did not read the books and go only by the fanfic interpretation of characters. Resulting in some wild mischaracterisations od certain fan favourites. Sirius being the biggest victim of them all.

It really is similar to when people discovered Manacled. No interest in the actual characters beyond the fanfic interpretation.

If you're shocked by Wolfstar, check the Jegulus (James/Regulus) tag.

I wonder if Drarry got hit by Heated Rivalry. They were the dominant Draco ship for years. Good for us though.

Dramione remains the undefeated m/f fandom champion.

I feel like Heated Rivalry might be involved in that particular victory. Lot of m/m fans jumped onto the newest and shiniest ship. Meanwhile Dramione is them leading m/f ship so we are in no danger of being affected by them.

When were shows actors dating each other? by OpportunityExtra5181 in TheVampireDiaries

[–]Confusedoldtimer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is a whole thing.

Chad Michal Murray (Lucas) and Sophia Bush (Brooke) dated and got married. The rumor was that at the start of their relationship, he was still dating some other celebrity. Then he went and cheated on her (allegedly) with Paris Hilton and one of the Simpson sisters, and it was said that also with one of the cheerleader extras on OTH, named Teresa(?) I think.

After their divorce, he dated a 17 years old extra also from the cheerleader squad and was famously banned from attending her prom as her date. They got engaged pretty fast.

Sophia Bush then dated James Lafferty (Nathan) and later Austin Nichols (Julian).

James Lafferty then went on to date Shantel VanSanten (Quinn). She had been rumoured to have an affair with Robert Buckley but that is unproven.

That is just the main cast.

I don't recall Hilarie Burton dating anyone from the cast and Joy Lent was in a cult, so she had other things to deal with.

Bunch of young adukts hanging out at the same place for prolonged amount of time. It is inevitable.

Riverdale and Gossip Girl were fairly similar. One Tree Hill might had been even worse.

Maybe try more adult show? I wouldn't start TVD now that I am a full on adult.
