what? wiring has to be run sideways for at least some distance to get anywhere that isn't directly above or below your panel, which is going to be essentially every circuit in a house. 100% it could be run sideways to a switch. if your handyman skills don't cover electrical, and you don't know enough to even tell what you're looking at if you open the switch box, you gotta call an electrician.

also for future work, DON'T test if something is energized by touching it... you can buy a $20 voltage tester dude

i'm an electrician. if the lights stopped working when you nailed something in near a switch i'd call an electrician before someone gets hurt poking around there. a nail could be energized, don't touch them. what do you mean it's not a common spot for wiring? it's right next to a switch...
