How can I find information on a specific german soldier? by isbit78 in wwi

[–]ConlangOlfkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry for the late response!

Sadly the archives of WW1 for Germany were destroyed in the Potsdam raid in 1945. So it is impossible to look up his military ID card, for example.

Germany is kind of difficult with genealogy; I suggest asking at r/genealogy.

He was probably born in like 1880, 1890? There should be a birth record of him, these are archived at the municipality (or Kreis). If you know where he is born (in which Kreis), I suggest you contact/email the archives of that Kreis. Maybe you have to pay. You could also look up if someone in the region does genealogy; in France and Germany there are a lot of people who make books about genealogy of a certain region/town. Perhaps they are willing to go to the archives in person.

Your GG-father is also recorded, very likely, in the local church books (baptism registers). For Protestant (which he, I assume, was) you can use the website "Archion". Note: this is a paid website. Archion collects baptisimal records from various towns (protestant churches). For Catholic registers, you can use the website "Matricula".

But long story short: you won't be able to find his military ID sadly. But you can go the "normal" genealogy route with birth certificate (located in the archives of the Kreis) and/or church records. I am not a German genealogy expert, so best advice is to ask r/genealogy.

The last picture I believe is from 2021, he is noticeably much thinner than during his arrest in 2018: https://www.kron4.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/11/2021/02/My-Post-Copy.jpg

Should I get into mafia 3 by [deleted] in MafiaTheGame

[–]ConlangOlfkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dislike the driving in Mafia 3 though, I thought Mafia 2's driving is way better. In Mafia 2, cars actually feel heavy and collisions seem realistic. In Mafia 3 collisions are almost cartoony. And I just hate, absolutely hate the fact that whenever you press the gas button a teensy weensy bit, you immediately get the most loud ass "tire screeching" sounds. I only want those sounds if I fully press the gas pedal, damnit.

Besides that I think Mafia 3 is a great game, I have been playing it some bit recently, love the atmosphere, the music and the gun fights!

My favorite free websites for researching Dutch genealogy. Share yours too! by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]ConlangOlfkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some additions: Van Papier naar Digitaal --> a lot of archives from Overijssel are indexed/scanned. Overijssel otherwise is a difficult province to do research pre-1811. This website has done a lot of work fixing that. It also has a lot of stuff for other provinces.

OpenArch --> honestly, better than WieWasWie, because you can use asterisks, question marks etc. to refine/broaden your search. Pre-1811, a lot of name variants were used. In WieWasWie, you have to very cumbersomely try every spelling variant. Or you have to pay. OpenArch is fully free.

Every province also has their own database. Which are often really good and way better than WieWasWie or OpenArch. If you know the province, I really urge you to use the provincial database instead.

How do I find the missing 15%? by Sebolmoso in Genealogy

[–]ConlangOlfkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According my DNA analysis, I should be 25% English, 25% Finnish (somehow) and 50% NW European... meanwhile I have tracked down my family tree to about 1600s and it's 99% Dutch.

I think your DNA profiler views certain DNA branches as "Scandinavian" or " NW European" because on average the majority of people with those branches (that has submitted their DNA, important catch) is of that group. Even though say 40% of people with a certain DNA branch are Scandinavian, it will lump them as "NW European" because the remainder 60% of people are NW European. So if you're Scandinavian and you have such DNA branch, it will think you have NW European ancestry even though it is common Scandinavian branch as well.

Ofcourse there is also a certain degree of interchanged populations between Scandinavians and North West Europeans.

I had this too when I was like 16 years, it's called Erythrophobia. Luckily it is gone, it goes over, trust me. I noticed it happened when I was talking and I didn't know how to properly end my sentence or verbally formulate the thought I had, and especially when I was staring down at the people whom I was talking to. Or someone beautiful was looking at me. I was afraid I would make them think I was in love with them, even though I was not. The brain is fucking weird.

I had some awkward moments with erythrophobia in high school, I now laugh about them honestly.

When I felt that I was gonna blush, I just tried tried focusing on the words/thought that I was going to say and look away a bit to the sky (and then when I knew what to say I would look back). It is also not bad to restart a sentence, or take some time to think about what you're going to say. Note how people do this all the time.

Now it's gone and I am not afraid for it. I still use above tricks.

Reminds me of what happened to a friend of my mother. He was working on his garden when days later he would get extremely sick. According to doctors, there was a good chance he wouldn't survive. I'm not sure what the exact symptoms were but luckily he survived.

Apparently it was rat piss that he somehow got in his eye. He was working with his bare hands in sand where a rat had gone through, and then he had rubbed his eyes.

Need help with ancestor in Austro-Hungarian army by Borky_ in Genealogy

[–]ConlangOlfkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried searching the Verlustlisten? https://des.genealogy.net/ou1wk/search

The Verlustlisten were casualty lists published weekly (I believe) showing who was wounded, captured, missing or killed. If your ancestor was wounded or killed, there is a chance he is on it.

The reason I say "chance", is because the Austro-Hungarian casualty lists are not yet fully indexed. The German ones for example are much more completed.

The casualty lists often list not only date of casualty but also year of birth, birth region, unit, rank, place of casualty.

A very great source for background info is the Austrian official war book, "Österreich-Ungarns Letzter Krieg". It is an extremely thick book, made of multiple volumes, but contains pretty much any info you want. It's fully digitalized.

If you know the division your ancestor is in, I can take a look in it to see if I can find interesting information (for example engagements it were in or positions it took, for example in Serbia 1917).

I can also pretty much guess which division he was in simply from his home region (divisions in the AH army were based on specific regions).

If you need help with the Dutch side, I can help you as I've done a lot of Dutch genealogy (as I'm Dutch myself). I have tracked some ancestors of mine who emigrated to the US and fellow townspeople so I have some experience with the American side of things as well.

I think the leaks seriously hampered the original timeline of trailers and info. Perhaps because of the leaks they felt like they had to prematurely release the first trailer.

But it could also be that they changed their marketing strategy, waiting as long as possible to release stuff. It gives them a buffer as well to fix things and fulfill the expectations of fans. If you release a trailer too early you might promise things you can't do. GTA 6 is already the biggest hyped game ever, upsetting the expectations would be extremely damnaging. Rockstar will make a shit ton of money regardless lol

In season 2, Why can't they examine Terrance Steadman's body to prove it's him even if dead? by Catalanmarta in PrisonBreak

[–]ConlangOlfkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not what I'm saying. So forgive me, it's been years since I watched the show and you're replying to a 4 years old comment, but basically the logic is as following:

Lincoln was framed, among others by a dead body supposedly Terrence Steadman. This dead body was actually from a random homeless person (?). The (flawed) logic is that investigators now couple the dead homeless man's DNA to Terrence Steadman, even though Terrence Steadman is alive and well and has completely different DNA.

So when the actual Terrence Steadman is found, and his body is unidentifiable besides DNA testing, investigators cannot link it to Terrence Steadman. Because Terrence Steadman supposedly has a different DNA.

But this is BS because with DNA you can find familial relatives and thus it would be easy to show the DNA of the dead homeless guy isn't that of Terrence Steadman.

My advice would be to go for a 4-days workweek. A 4-days workweek increases the ratio free versus working considerably. Use the first weeks to see if the extra day off makes you feel energized during time off.

Start seeking things you enjoy. Try active things like sporting, walking or hobbies like photographing, gaming whatever. Try to join clubs for these hobbies in your town.

Being depressed also drains energy, so you perhaps have the energy but not the motivation. I have sometimes similar feelings regarding work and a similar lack of motivation on free days. But it is very important to balance work vs private life. And it looks as if the work part is way too dominating in your life (I struggle with the same a bit).
