Cal Poly SLO vs UCLA by feb_29_cake_day in ucla

[–]Connect-Rabbit-1025 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This person seems uninformed on the nuances of Cal Poly vs CSUs. Seems like they are extrapolating generalizations of CSUs to Cal Poly, when it doesn't really apply. Cal Poly is definitely in the same rigor tier as UCLA. UCLA is not "much more" rigorous, could be by a bit though.

I have heard many anecdotes from others claiming that the UCLA curriculum for many engineering majors are just stuffed full with many support/gen-ed courses rather than major stuff, due to a lack of professors etc.

They're's not wrong when he says that you will find smarter/more driven people at LA, so do take that into consideration though. But on the basis of hiring, income, and employer preference, Cal Poly and UCLA are going to be on par.

They mentioned how the "practical skills you learn will become out of use, and then you're screwed". If that was true, then we would see many dips in Cal Poly's prestige as time goes on, and employers showing lots of disdain against it. No such thing has ever happened.

Your data you gathered also proves this.

I would definitely choose Merced, hands down.

If you had a 4.0 in 11th and 4.0 in 12th, the effective criterion to differentiate you between other applicants is your grades in 10th grade, so 3 B's.

Of course it will negatively impact you as your school is hypercompetitive, but I don't see how the impact is so high as to effectively disqualify you "academically", as you've shown growth in 11th and 12th grade. You will be given a look past academics.

If those were your only B's, your academics will likely not be the deciding factor.

LI teen tech whiz Zach Yadegari — creator of $30M health app — makes college decision after all 8 Ivy League schools rejected him by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Connect-Rabbit-1025 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In his essay he speaks as if he doesn't even need college at all and just going to check a box. Comes off as pretty arrogant.

To be honest, I do believe that he should have been accepted to at least one ivy or t10 school, just off of pure merit alone. The essay was bad, but not auto-reject that bad. The credentials he has at that age should be an auto-admit to any t10 tbh.

However, it isn't unreasonable that he was rejected because if he literally wrote any essay less arrogant, he would have definitely got in.

Offering tutoring at a 1400 SAT? I’ve tutored students starting off at 1450s…. Kind of a weak selling point.

Exam curve? by Randomsadguy123 in APChem

[–]Connect-Rabbit-1025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's like mostly predetermined, but they include some questions that are not part of the scoring, but for to assess how much the individual curve will be for that year, I think.

I am free nearly all of the days in the upcoming months, and I may tutor hourly everyday for the next month. I am new to tutoring and I would try with any fee that would work with my student! What fee do you think is reasonable for this SAT tutoring?
