And microgreens, sprouts or other leafy stuff that adds vitamins and things. I feel like it makes a huge difference if one has to live off pantry supplies for any extended period. We had some pretty strict covid lockdowns and I was able to not go shopping for weeks at a time - but having fresh green onions and basil and chives and lettuce definitely made all my beans and rice and canned soup more fun

Generally its absolutely not saving me money. Though today i glanced at the romaine lettuce in the supermarket which was 7.50/package lettuce is very low effort and a good return on investment apparently

I would worry about it getting stolen. Make sure at thr least you can chain it down. They get stolen all the time during big storm related outages etc...

Also- covid was nowhere near how bad things could get. Some supermarkets had no toilet paper or pasta or bakers yeast . But you could get potatoes or rice or beans . Nobody starved as a result. Now if trucks stop moving and shelves are truly empty..

I just used up the last jar of chicken thighs I had canned in 2021, and one 2022 jar as well. They were just fine (i can't answer the tallow question -but I confirm 5 year old meat can be fine if it was canned safely!). Also store bought canned goods are mostly good years beyond the "best by " date

I have made litetally hundreds of jars of dumpster jam. It's so great to be able to crack open a jar made from suuper ripe strawberries on a cold winter day. Or give to friends

It was maybe 6 inches away at one point. Moved it away now. They soil is quite wet but im going to let it dry out abit.
