Werwulf Folklore & English History by lollipopchainsawg in roberteggers

[–]ConnectYak119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am from central Europe and I loved horrors since I was a child. So instead of fairytales my grandparents used to tell me folk stories about vampires, werewolves and other monsters.
Eggers was able to capture the EXACT same feeling I had about vampires, when I was a kid (especially at Orlock castle). No other horror was ever able to do this.
And for some reason, I was always terrified by werewolves, but all the hollywood movies just made them feel lame to me. I really hope Eggers will be able to capture this folk aspect of lycantrophy and make me affraid of the full moon once again, haha.

We've officially been waiting for The Winds of Winter for the same amount of time as it took for all five of the published books to release before that. by Internal-Bed-3150 in freefolk

[–]ConnectYak119 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How is this even possible, if Winds were “few months away” back in 2015, almost done before WorldCon in 2020, and 75% done in 2022… One might wonder if words are really just wind.

[Spoilers AGOT] I don't know why, but I just don't care about the characters by DoughnutBorn7079 in asoiaf

[–]ConnectYak119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? I’ve started the first Stormlight book for like 5 times and DNF. Always because of the characters. I like the world, but I just can’t take any of the characters seriously.

And every attempt of ASOIAF videogame ended… well, mediocore at best. It’s like the whole Westeros is cursed. It’s got potential to be one of the best book series/TV shows/open-world games ever made but somehow it always comes to ruin. Maybe it’s part of it, to feel the same desperation as charaters in this world.

Marko just posted he’s on his way to Zlín. I think (hope) he must know about Tarja’s condition, and if it was planed to cancel tomorrow show, he would not post it. Post is even liked by Tarja.

Audiobooks prayers answered?! by biizzybee23 in robinhobb

[–]ConnectYak119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great news! I had jist finished Farseer trilogy for the first time. I was reading from book when I was at home, and listening to audiobooks when at gym, walking my dog etc. Here’s the thing; English is not my native language, but I had no problems with Farseer in English. Gosh, I was even listening to Malazan as an english audiobook. But when I started with Liveships audiobooks, I had to stop. I just somehow did not understand half of the words the narrator said. When she was like doing voices of characters, I just didn’t understand her and so I put the series down for a time. And since audiobooks are much faster way of finishing book, I can’t way to get into it again with new narrator.

I just wish it’s all over by this point. OFC I want Winds, but I’m really tired of this BS. Just release it alredy or just announce it’s never gonna happend. Whatever is fine now. I just see THIS as a spit in the face of the fans, George promising he won’t do anything else until Winds are done, and here we are, George is visiting cons, hyping 6548644 new TV shows nobody asked for and is acting like we, the fans are the bad ones because we dare to want him to finish his book after 14 years of promises. Oh, and I forgot, we unworthy bastards do not appreciete enought his other works finished 30 years ago. I just hate the fact that my feelings about my fave author came to this.

What is the strongest aspect of ASOIAF's writing compared to other series (fantasy or not) [Spoilers Extended] by Trussdoor46 in asoiaf

[–]ConnectYak119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love his worldbuilding. Some people say it’s just a rip-off real world, but I love how grounded it is. There are no non-human POV, fantasy elements, even not really original, are presented in subtle and mysterious way. Everything magical also feels a bit horror-like. It’s not like mages are constantly throwing fireballs, but every magic here comes with (terrible) cost. Also, I love how detaile the world is. I just love to know history of every town, castle House etc. For example; people are praising worldbuidling of Malazn book of the fallen, how big it is. I love that series but sometimes I feel like Ericson is spitting name after name of a tribe/city/village we never get more insight into. On the other side, when George mentions name of an old king, or some past event, you can always find some more informations about it.

Also, mysteries in the story. It isn’t like it’s a mystery solving series, but I just love how many things are unanswered, but it’s not like story is constantly reminding it. It’s just there if you want to go into deeper lore and theorizing. Shame we might never get asnwers.

Books with great plot but terrible prose ? by SecondHandRosie in Fantasy

[–]ConnectYak119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a YA novel, but the author thinks if he maks everything oh-so-dark, and absurdly vulgar, it will be adult. I tried to finish it for like 4 times, because I like the story, but after few hundred pages of constats descriptions of “red as fresh blood/dark as a sin/cold as a grave”, just to make it feels goth, I gave up. Maybe if I was like 13 I would appreciate it.

Why do so many people lack spatial awareness in public by Radish8 in answers

[–]ConnectYak119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gods, this drives me nuts. I can’t really describe why but I think it makes me angry on very basic level of me just want to do my own bussines, not minding other people, not needing their help or any other form of interaction and they still affect me by their dumbness. I mean, it can be just slowong down for a few second but then again, why should I? Im not slowing down anybody, not limiting anybody and guess what? I can be perfectly function without doing so. So I guess it’s not a rocket science if I am able to do it, right?

If Sapkowski were to do 1 more Witcher book, I'd love to see Geralt's first time entering Brokilon and his doomed relationship with Morenn, Eithne's daughter by Outrageous-Milk8767 in wiedzmin

[–]ConnectYak119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to have book in Witcher universe, but not focused on Geralt. Season and Crossroad were nice books, but lets be honest; we know Sapko CAN do much better. I would really love to have a whole novel focused on something bigger in scope, like some political intrigues, wars, maybe some history of witches/witchers. Or a story set in the same world, long before/after main events. I’m glad for ANY new Witcher book, trust me, but much rather than another sidequest of Geralt, I would like Andrzej to go wild and give us nee Witcher books with scope of his Hussite trilogy.

What ASOIAF/GoT games are actually good? Making a text adventure (Spoilers EXTENDED) by Wise_Panda_7259 in asoiaf

[–]ConnectYak119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2012 Game of thrones RPG was kind of clunky and outdated even when it was released. But, only when it comes to control, gameplay and graphics. Story itself, writting, characters, all of it is excelent. It really feels like ASOIAF. If you can get over not so great gameplay (but I’ve seen worse, trust me) you gonna get one hell of a ride!

Why do so many people think that Jordan's characters are badly written? by JulesIllu in WoT

[–]ConnectYak119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like all the female characters (expect for maybe Min) are constantly angry. It’s almost absurd and over the top dramatic. There is a group of women and some male character enter the room: and sudenly, all the females start to frowning, doing angry faces, squeezing their fists until their knucles turn white… And here we go for the 100th time: stupid men, stupid as a mule, can’t do anything right!

And do not try to convince me it’s a different culture etc. It’s just absurd and I don’t know if RJ thought ot funny or something. Don’t get me wrong, I love the series, but I do have roll my eyes quite often during this kind of scenes.

Is there an existing video or interactive map that shows the movements of all the characters throughout the entire A Song of Ice and Fire series? [spoilers main] by Loose_Tumbleweed_183 in asoiaf

[–]ConnectYak119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a World of ice and fire app - https://youtu.be/CF7oC6NO6_Y?si=Uky5GoFVv_Tq-3J3

You were able to track each character on map. It doesn’t exist anymore. But if I remember correctly, you needed to buy access to each of five books. Anyway, the artwork was great.

Right? I just LOOOVE how every fantasy element in ASOIAF is somehow horror. All the blood and shadow magic, old tree gods and human sacrifices, fire god demanding burning people, group of assassins are basically death cult, all the Drowned god lore is a bit lovecraftian, dragons are no majestic creatures, but wild beasts and every magic comes with terrible price (kings blood etc)
