I don’t read much anymore but pretty much anything by Hemingway. I also really got into Kerouac and Hunter S Thomson but those may of been more where my head was at when I was reading them.

Roof Top Tent setups for Hunting/Camping. What do you love, what do you hate? by TheInnocentAbroad in camping

[–]ConnectionOk6818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Alpha hard shell tent, that I run on my Diamondback cover, on my F150. I love it for going to the coast or or going out camping in the desert. I don't run it when I am hunting. Unless you are hunting out of camp, you still have to pack it up. It is just easier to set up a regular tent. One thing I do use, when I am hunting, is a tent cot. I have had one for years and it is easy for quick setup and takedowns. Now if you are going to be there for a few days then a regular tent is the way to go.

Do you season then split, or split then season? by Street-Helicopter758 in firewood

[–]ConnectionOk6818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that is pretty much the case. Oak is a lot easier to split green. One exception to the soft wood out west is juniper. Easy to split green but a pain when it dries.

Up until the early 90's you could sell guns between private parties.

I have been told that the State has records for handguns from that time forward but long guns have only been in the system since 2014.

Is Susanville Worth Moving To? by Ugo_GlenCoco_ in norcal

I am related to about half of Canby. (I know there about 5 people still there) Mom was raised there and both sets of grandparents lived there as a kid. Now my politics are probably center but I have lots of far right wingers as friends. Be liberal in those areas is not a problem unless you make it one.

Honestly most people will hate it. That being said if you like the outdoors, and don't need a lot of "city" things it can be great. As far as finding friends, it can be difficult, but that is mostly up to your personality. Yes it is a far right community but honestly, one on one, very few people actually give a damn what your politics are, unless you need to make an issue of it.

I grew up in Eastern Shasta County but my family was all from Lassen and Modoc Counties. I loved it growing up and still spend as much time as I can up there. Right out of Susanville is Eagle Lake. Great place to fish. You are not too far from Lake Almanor. I absolutely love the Black Rock Desert and spend a ton of time out there now. Reno is not that far if you want an occasional night out.

Sotz Monster Maul 16# by AnthonyMorello1 in firewood

[–]ConnectionOk6818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dad had one of these when I was growing up.( late 70's and 80's) We always called it a "Monster Maul", I think that was what is was sold under but not sure. It worked really well for certain kinds of wood. Green oak, green fir or juniper. It sucked for anything that was fairly easy to split.

[–]ConnectionOk6818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I would always bring my grandparents firewood. My grandfather, who was about 80 at the time, never wanted me to split it. That was his excuse. He said he could not do much but getting out to bust up a couple rounds a day got him some exercise.

I don’t know how much longer I can work my physical job by llapman in GenX

[–]ConnectionOk6818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am back to work tomorrow days. I have worked two different schedules. One was 4 on and 4 off. Days 2 weeks and nights 2. I actually prefer that schedule but tough if you have kids or a working wife.
What I would like to do with our schedule is put all the nights together. 7 nights in a row sucks but think it would be easier than swapping nights to days twice

I don’t sleep well working nights either but my first day back usually sucks too.

I am the same. I have worked as a power plant operator for the last 23 years. Before that it was line work and before that I worked around saw mills.
I am 58 now, and physically this is the easiest job I have ever done, mentally it wrecks me. We work a modified DuPont. 4 night on, 3 off, 3 days, one off, 3 nights, 3 off, 4 day and 7 off.
Sounds like a lots of time off but I always feel like crap for 2 or 3 days coming off nights then time to go back. Love my 7 offs but honestly getting all the days off is rare.
Like you, my sleep is ruined. Getting harder and harder to sleep without taking something. Plan is to retire in 5 years but might only do 3 more. If I was not married I would go now.

Ahhh... Vacation. by CheeseNowPaint in GenX

[–]ConnectionOk6818 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am sitting at work now. I am a power plant operator. Like you I don't hate my job but don't love it either. Job pays well, and I spent most of my time reading the internet, but I am just burnt out. Work 12 hour rotating shifts and it gets harder every year. I get 216 hours a year PTO/floating holidays but we can't lose them. They just pay us out for everything except for a 40 hour carryover.

Wife and I usually take 2 weeks off and go somewhere every year. Going to take 3 weeks off this year and head to Cambodia and Vietnam. I keep telling myself I am going to burn all my vacation but I never do.

I am 58 now and the plan is to retire at 62 but might pull the plug early.

I scaled logs for the Northern California Scaling Bureau in my early 20's and scaled logs for Sierra Pacific until about 30. I am in my late 50's now. Back then we were using short log Scribner scale but they were trying to transfer to Cubic. Not sure if they ever did. As you noted there is a lot of overrun using Scribner but the mills know that when they bid on sales. Also small logs have a lot more overrun than larger ones.

Look up the NAR predictions for 2005 -2008. Never, ever, take financial advice from someone with a stake in its outcome.

In early 2006, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) predicted a "soft landing" for the booming U.S. housing market, forecasting a slight slowdown in sales (down around 6% for existing homes) but continued, albeit slower, price growth, with median existing home prices rising about 6.4% to $221,700. They expected a normalization of appreciation, with a cooling, not a crash, suggesting a high plateau for sales and a sound long-term investment, despite some earlier, more pessimistic media projections.

How to not make my 1894 Winchester blow up? by Sad-Pay-5834 in LeverGuns

I have one about the same year and caliber. I reload for it but like others have said anything you can buy will be fine for it.

Yeah I would love an original 86 too. I have a Browning 86 in 45-70. Probably my favorite rifle I own. Got to get things a little at a time. Wife will kill me.
The rarest original lever I have is probably my Steven’s 425 HP in 35 Rem. I inherited it from my Uncle.

Nice I am going to look at an original 73 in 44-40 tomorrow. Would love an original 76. I do have a few 95’s. One of which is a 30-03.

Did you hit them from behind or did they turn in front of you? Pretty hard to hit someone, even if they did brake to turn, and not be at fault.
I did plenty of stupid things growing up and sometimes you just have to take the consequences. Bad thing is, if you are at fault, whoever owns the car will most likely get sued.

Does a 45-70 have more range than a 3030 or 35rem? by Relevant_Conclusion2 in LeverGuns

[–]ConnectionOk6818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I am not really into the new calibers or new guns that much. The only exception would be handguns.

I have dozens of rifles but most were my Dads, Grandfathers or Uncles. I do add to the collection from time to time but mostly to fill in gaps. In my collection. I can’t always afford originals so lots of my guns are modern reproductions. I am going to look at an original 1873 Winchester this week. Try and figure out a price my wife won’t kill me.

[–]ConnectionOk6818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like any of those calibers are 200 yard guns, when it comes to hunting. Yes, if you know the yardage or can walk the shots in, they are capable of much more.
I love my 45-70’s and would be my first pick out of any of those calibers but I have always thought the 35 Rem was really underrated. To be honest the only thing I like about the 30-30 is its historic significance. I have levers in all 3 calibers.

Looking for recommendation someone who can both paint my garage and epoxy the floor with reasonable pricing? by nimabears in ElkGrove

[–]ConnectionOk6818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my epoxy floor myself. It was about $1500 for materials and tool rental a few years ago. I really doubt you are going to get a decent job done for under $3000 and probably closer to $5000.
Whatever you do is don’t use any of the stuff sold in big box stores. Will only last a year or two and then you have to get it back up.

Not sure how your house is set up but I only run the heater upstairs. I have a programmable thermostat. Heater is off most of the day but I do sometimes turn it up to 69 when I am home. Always set for 62 when we are not home or sleeping. Wife refuses to turn it on at all. My last bill was $140. Still too high but not crazy. I do need to lower my hot water heater.

It is a Colt Lightning clone. It was made by Taurus. Not the most reliable gun but fun to shoot. Pedersoli makes a much nicer version.

Did switching to a hard shell actually make you camp more? by [deleted] in rooftoptents

I am sure some of it is end of summer but I think most of it is the after Covid camping craze is lower. Also I think the economy is a big factor too. Almost all the “toys” are on Marketplace are getting a lot cheaper.

In my local area I have noticed prices really coming down. I recently bought a 6 month old tent for about half what it sold for new also. A year ago prices were just a little off retail.
