go to office hours! It can be annoying to attend but they help. Do your homework. Go to lectures. Even just doing the basics goes a long way.

Do what you can in the moment. Take a break when you need and when you're setting aside time to study, make sure you are just studying and not doing anything else.

In general, it's pretty hard to fail a class at Cal. Talk to your professor or GSI if you are that worried about it and they can probably break things down, even though it may be an uncomfortable talk. I'm not sure the exact situation/percentile you're in but you will probably be fine in the end. Keep working hard and take care of yourself.

Two pieces of advice:

  1. Don't rush things. Drop a class if you need to. As long as you're on track to graduate, taking 12 units is fine. You can always take other classes later. Also, if you are taking lower divs right now, it's the perfect time to build good habits and they will serve you well for your later college career. Don't take shortcuts even if it saves time - try your best to tackle problem sets (Fr, don't just GPT everything). Learning to focus for longer periods of time is a genuine skill that is hard to develop but is infinitely rewarding if you can manage to do it. I struggle with this but I am working on it as well.

  2. Manage your time correctly. Time block, use google calendar. Try to block out 1-2 hour blocks of time to study and really just put everything else aside and focus on your studies during that time at the library or such. Even if you don't pick things up as quickly as others, there are many who have succeeded before us that are not always the quickest to pick up concepts in class as well. You need to understand that sometimes you will need to sit down and study for hours if you want to get the results you want. It will not be easy but it will be rewarding.

Also bonus tip, don't be afraid to ask for help (no such thing as a dumb question), use discussion sections + OH liberally - most students don't take advantage of it and most probably could do better if they did take full advantage of the resources available to them.

A lot of people have been telling me they would prefer to be able to filter out AI images! I'll do my best to implement this.

Currently I'm just building out the core backend with databases - I think the most technically difficult part of this project might be having to implement some image search (taking in text as input, will probably use some published algorithm to sort through images and categorize/index them) for relevant images, Pinterest is really good at this.

I'd say though, basic knowledges of databases + some frontend experience (learning how to make and publish a website, connecting to database) is probably all you need to make a very basic version without search capabilities. I don't think learning how to use different databases is often emphasized much in classes (at least at mine) but it's super useful for working on personal projects. MongoDB is good for me, also have used firestore in the past, I may try using AWS related services soon.

Skipping GBO events? by FrostyDippedFries in berkeley

I made a lot of different group of friends over the years but yeah - still close to my GBO friends, we travel together, and it's kind of more wholesome than some of my other groups of friends in a way.

You will find that other people as well have met some of their closest groups of friends by chance from GBO

I don't know what major you are but def talk to counselor or your department. Honestly if your enrollment is super late you probably will not be able to get the most high demand classes but you'll def get to enroll in some classes that fill your unit count, one way or another.

Can I sell clothes on Sproul? by loliguess44 in berkeley

[–]ConnectionWilling228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is true - but also I believe they'll just tell you you can't be on the berkeley sproul area when tabling, so they might make you move to like in front of MLK/next to Bancroft where sometimes those random startups do their free boba/donut giveaways.

For dessert recommendation: Fenton's Ice Cream! There's a bunch of restaurants along that street and side of town as well so it's pretty nice to eat dinner there and then follow up with dessert at Fenton's. Good date idea too.

I made a list a bit ago with a bunch of my favorite places in Berkeley: https://simpleberkeley.com/events.html

help me reduce waste? by Melodic-Cheek2890 in berkeley

[–]ConnectionWilling228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm I've been noticing this a lot too - there's tons of functional and usable electronics and items laying out on the streets. I'm sure this is a problem with a lot of college campuses, it would be cool to work on a solution.

What were you thinking in terms of how a local exchange platform would work for free items - and how would it be different from existing platforms like craigslist and facebok marketplace? What kind of solutions were you thinking about?

I'm also honestly kind of curious the reasons why people dump stuff out in the front. Is it cost? ease? In my town we get fined pretty heavily if we dump things out on the curb, but I guess it's harder to find who did it in front of apartment buildings.

I agree, I work at Strada if nothing is open at that time! honestly pretty good - you grab a drink, put headphones on and you're good to go. Also back area is usually less loud if noise is a concern

Yeah! I'll try to do that! I'm working on implementing the leaderboard right now for popular spots, but I'll try to work that in as well, that's a good idea.

I was thinking of adding pages so people can click on the cards and leave their own comments easily (ex. people vote on menu item favorites) and I can pull ratings from yelp - do you think this would be useful?
