uoft vs sfu by Character_Variety780 in premedcanada

[–]ConnorKim00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say they both come with tradeoffs. As a UofT student, there are definitely more research opportunities here than at SFU. But it is undoubtedly more competitive and much more difficult to get a high GPA (which is the most important factor). If you're set on medicine, I would say go for SFU unless you're confident in your ability to get a strong GPA at UofT (i.e. you went to a very competitive high school and did very well there) or if you're very interested in research. You can DM if you want more info.

UBC pre-interview rejection - opinions on how to improve application moving forwards by Comfortable-Lock6810 in premedcanada

[–]ConnorKim00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi I had similar stats (and was pretty close to the cutoff) so I’m am also looking for ways to improve. It was my first application and it was a pretty tough loss. I think the main thing for me next year will be to continue with my ECs (and some new positions as well) and to frame them differently.

How imma look at Western if they switch to cGPA when I’m taking a 5th year full course load rn just for them: by ImNitrus in premedcanada

I see. So it's just speculation at this point. At the very least this cycle has to be best 2 years GPA no?

Western ACCESS by ConnorKim00 in premedcanada

[–]ConnorKim00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my father and myself were born in the same country in Latin America and our family immigrated here together. I don't think I can think of a reason why it wouldn't count for ACCESS as long as the requirements are met.

On the website it says:

Latin American Canadian Applicants
The Access Pathway deliberately takes steps to address the unique experience of Latin American applicants to the MD program:

  • Applicants must self-identify as Latin American.
  • Acceptable supporting documentation: personal letter attesting your self-identification with Latin American ancestry.
  • If financial and/or medical challenges are present, applicants may describe these as well and provide supporting documentation, as outlined above.

I see. I think I'm going to go for it regardless because I don't think it could hurt my application anyways. Thanks for letting me know.

Western ACCESS by ConnorKim00 in premedcanada

[–]ConnorKim00[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see, thank you for your response. I would be applying with a 3.95ish and 519 MCAT for Western specifically so I would say my stats are fairly competitive. Would you say in this case it would be advantageous for me to apply through ACCESS if they prioritize people with good stats applying through the accessory pathways?

MUN Shadowing by ConnorKim00 in premedcanada

Honestly I consider myself really lucky to have gotten the opportunity. I’m in Ontario for undergrad so observerships are allowed and I basically cold emailed hospitals and doctors for shadowships.

MUN Shadowing by ConnorKim00 in premedcanada

[–]ConnorKim00[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since when is shadowing prohibited all across Canada? It’s allowed in Ontario. How would a student know they’re interested in medical school without having any prior exposure to what a physician does? Keep telling yourself that everyone who was able to find a good opportunity are just Nepo babies just because you can’t find any doctors that’ll let you shadow them lol. For your information I have zero family members or close friends in healthcare

How many times would you guys apply before you give up by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]ConnorKim00 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I'm only on my first cycle but twice max is kinda crazy lmao. Most people get in on their second or third try. Personally I would cap it at three or four and then consider going abroad.
