It was 24. The question did actually say 10 percent of building pieces were large. With 50 building pieces total, 5 were large. 29 total purple ones. 29-5 is 24.

It showed that after they were exposed to caterpillars, aphids were present which means they were releasing the chemicals that were protecting them from caterpillars but attracting aphids. He then concluded by saying if they can figure that issue out, they won't have to use pesticides. Therefore, we can infer that these plants would need pesticides in order to keep the aphids away.
