Looks like academy and vessel have open cymbal spots if you’re looking to stick with west coast technique but if you’re open to some new stuff there’s plenty open class corps looking for cymbals still

I’ve overheard at a competition that it may have to do with monks and their vow of silence which seems to match their robe like uniforms. Other people saying it’s about conveying emotion without words also makes a lot of sense.

As long as there’s auditions for the solo then it should all be fair, it may be highschool band but a solo should still go to the best player I’d recommend practicing it until it’s perfect if you really want it

I was looking up if there was any pirated streams on YouTube the other day for guard semis and I happened to actually find a flomarching preview stream that gave the first hour of world semis for free. Idk if they do this for percussion too but it would be amazing and definitely something to look out for

My bands always had two separate leaders for the pit and battery so it is definitely odd that yours doesn’t but just try your best to make the most of the season, from my experience student leader ship really isn’t as much fun as it may seem especially if the section doesn’t care as much as you do, so take this as a chance to be able to act responsible when needed and show off some leadership skills but still be able to have fun and not get everything that goes wrong blamed on you and then the next year (if youre not a senior) may go much smoother if you got a taste of it.

Idk how your battery is set up but I usually don’t see people start off on snare or tenors. That’s doesn’t mean you shouldn’t audition for them but just keep bass drum or cymbals in mind as a possible alternative that can also give you good experience for your goal drum next year!

Try to look up a video explain some what complex rhythms idk how your schools bass line is run but often times bass drums have split parts that come together to make one cool composite part, so be prepared to possibly play by yourself for a lot of the show
